P4000 code 31 question

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I want to buy a P4000, supposedly not working for my m18x r2. the seller is asking a low price for it, but it has error code 31. Is this a problem with driver modding or could there be something wrong with the video card? because, as I know: code 43 may mean a video card failure, not code 31

Hello. Nice choice of gpu.

Did you manually edited the drivers.inf file by yourself, or did you used Nvclean install software to mod your drivers?

Use DDU uninstall, remove any existing drivers, and then use NVclean Install to setup new ones. Select any version from the list you like.

All my Aliens m18xr2 and 2 m17xr4 ran P4000's. Always modded .inf manually and always ran smooth. The added bonus was when I got it running with the 120hz 3D screen in PEG mode (with alot of help from @Jerryzago and others here) But I would like to go further with P5000 if a good price shows up. The other 2 Aliens are running RTX 3000's also very smooth and the m18xr2 had a HP RTX 4000 until I flashed the vBios. I am just saying in case you might look for other options, but the P4000 is and should work great

This is a mistake from the seller(he has a Lenovo thinkpad p70) and I think that it simply does not fit his laptop, because as I know, only Maxwell can be installed in the P70, this is a feature of their BIOS, and only Pascal in the P71. I wanted to clarify before purchasing whether it was working or whether the seller was doing something wrong, but I had already decided to order. tomorrow or the day after tomorrow I will have it, I think everything will be fine, because this is not code 43. but it is from Lenovo, so I will probably need to flash another vbios.

Just my opinion but I wouldn't buy a card that needs to be flashed vBios before seeing it work first. P4000's are dropping in price lately and there are alot that will work just with .inf modding. There are some OC vBios here that increase performance quite nicely. Is this card the right form factor? I don't know what Lenovo has in their machines. Can you provide a pic?

I don’t have a photo of the back and I’m sure that it has vbios from Lenovo, but I have a programmer, a 1.8 volt adapter and the skills to work with it. so it won't be a problem for me. I took this risk that the video card might not work at all due to the price of $55 with shipping in my country. I can’t buy a video card directly from ebay from my country, and through intermediaries the price rises significantly. Ordering it on AliExpress would not be a problem, but it costs more than 55 dollars.)

@aldarxt, hi, I have it and everything is fine. I immediately flashed it with the bios from the Macrumors website "P4000M_OC3.rom", but there are some problems. in Time Spy I get 4300 Graphics score, while others with "P4000M_OC.rom" get around 4700-4800, what could be the matter(I have 330W AC Adapter)? Because, as I see from the GPU-Z graph (I attach a photo). My frequency is constantly decreasing due to the power limit. Maybe I should try flashing that "P4000M_OC.rom" vBIOS? And maybe I can use Pascal TDP Tweaker to increase the power limit from 115 watts to 136 watts?

Now, I have already tried "P4000M_OC.rom", but still my frequency is constantly jumping. Now I have increased the power limit of "P4000M_OC.rom" using Mobile Pascal TDP Tweaker. and it still drops even before reaching the threshold of 136 watts(I attach photo). and at this time it does not even write Perf in PerfCapReason, and the rest of the time it writes Idle. This is extremely strange, maybe I'm doing something wrong? Can anyone help me so that my video card maintains high frequencies at all times?

I am having issues with the "P4000M_OC3.rom"  myself in m17x r4, the card was not even recognized  in device manager and nvidia drivers did not install.

So I flashed Version 86.04.51.00.03 NVIDIA Quadro P4000 0 MB BIOS TechPowerUp and its running fine. I'm not sure if these OC'd vbios are tweaked right for these old Aliens

Yes, it's sad that she doesn't seem to fit. I flashed the regular BIOS at the moment and now I don't have any problems with it anymore. Although this has a bad effect on performance, I now have stable frequencies and no stutters. By the way, here is my 3DMark result(if anyone is interested in how it performs in tests with the stock bios).

Looks like back then when we had first tried out the 980m.

135watt is an overkill for the slot. I have seen 120watt at tops, and only after doing the procedure to eliminate throttling. With 980m it was a necessity, even after doing the two PSU mod. For me, power draw was 580watts, even with my old 3720qm.

Try doing this.

Shut down your PC

Boot in Bios

Select unlocked advanced menu

Set gpu to Igfx

Reboot saving settings

Enter Bios once more

Select unlocked menu once more

Set gpu to SG and reboot to windows

Check if that fixes the fluctuations in clock speeds and also power draw.

Personally, I used to have a Tesla M6 (server analogue of the 980M without video outputs) overclocked, working in SG mode without any switching and consuming 136 W without any problems, but it didn’t want to consume more than 136 watts

P4000 is a 1060/1070 variant. Since you run it in SG mode, you already have the A11 unlocked BIOS. No dissasemble is required. Setting iGFX and SG mode, will surely boot. Dom't select PEG or auto mode.

Tesla M6, being a 980M surely draw 125watts at full load (and boost). I never overclocked mine to see its maximum draw. Also, why in SG mode? Should have worked in PEG mode, because it is a 980m?

He means He's having the problem with the OC'ed vBios, to do your prescription (that looks good) he need to flash vBios back to OC. Then reassemble

Tesla M6 is a server video card that does not have video outputs, so it can only be used as a graphics accelerator with built-in graphics. The video card itself cannot output image as 980M.

Hey @Maks0098 you need to get an Alienware m17x r4 cause it is so much easier to swap out CPU and GPU than the m18x r2. I dread working on the big 18 only cause of wear and tear, it's still my favorite Laptop and daily driver so I use the 17x's for fast experiment's. the battery, back cover 2 screws and there is the CPU and GPU heatsinks oh and fan removal. Its a pleasure to do quick swapps

@aldarxtI want it, but there are no cheap options in my country yet. I already have 17 R1, but I will sell it very soon and later I am going to take M17x R4. I’m also still thinking about some kind of clevo, something like p775tm.

I've developed a bit of an obsession for these old laptops. I have no interest in the newer ones. I like upgrading them and it seems new MXM GPU's keep showing up and OC'ed vBios keep it going. I tried the OC'ed 3 for the P4000 so I am going to try the lowest one the "P4000M_OC.rom" to see what happens, my m18x r2 has RTX 3000 and before that it had a HP RTX 4000 until I flashed the vBios and it stopped working while I was using it. Its just alot of screws and delicate plugs that slowly break over time so the m17x r4 makes it so much easier. When I find a sure thing then it will go in the 18. As far as Clevo it has not disappointed. I picked up a bare bones P870DM3-G and I think its the best laptop in the world. Not hard to work on and upgrade able  and very powerful. It also has modded BIOS and had GTX 1080 in SLI but now it has RTX 3080 and I9-9900K

@aldarxt @Maks0098 Thank you both for the clarifications.

Try using the throttle free trick, I worked for the M18x back in the day.

Thank you so much for this advice, it worked for me. I also found a bios for P4000 with even higher frequencies than in “P4000M_OC3.rom” (here 1708 MHz) namely 1747 and 1772 MHz (here there was a 122 watt TDP limit). Here is the result in 3DMark Time Spy at 1772 MHz and 122 watts:

I also tested this in furmark, I am attaching a photo.(553).thumb.png.76b856b30f48cd00601f83bc9c60df6a.png Later, I tried using Mobile Pascal TDP Tweaker to increase the TDP limit to 136 watts and my result in Time Spy increased, and later I tested this overclocking in Fire Strike, here are the results:

I also attach a photo of the furmark test with the same overclocking(554).thumb.png.fad9bc048b90fe007f6a012214c67265.png
