hey guys. 🙂

I recently purchased an omen 16 with the 3060 i7 11800h and its a fantastic laptop for everything. its fast and has 3060 desktop performance out of the box even though its just a 115w part. the cpu runs cool for most people and all around great if not fantastic buy. that is if you have the money they are not cheap.

mine runs hot but I will be RMAing it soon because everyone else is reporting temps in the 60-70c range and mine spikes to 100c with light load, just a faulty paste job/unit.

my review short but sweet even with the slight heating issues..

7.9/10

buy the per key rgb keyboard and 165hz 1440p 3070 model for the extra 200 bucks you won't regret it. it has amazing performance.

Omen 15 2019 reporting in!!!

  • i7-9750h (undervolted and repasted with Thermalright TFX)
  • 144Hz G-Sync Display
  • RTX 2070 Max-Q 8 GB (90w boooooo I want 115w)
  • 16GB DDR4 @2666
  • 512 GB SSD NVMe Intel H10 + 32 GB Optane
  • 1000 GB Crucial MX500

A really good machine I can't complain, can run whatever I throw at it at 1080p high settings with at least 110 FPS. 😄 and if DLSS is available oh boy even better.

yeah thats a nice setup. the 2070 is still killer and matches the 3060. i just wish i had more space, might drop in a 1tb nvme

it actually beats the 3060 in a few games

Well that's pretty cool 😄 In all honesty I went completely blind when I bought this laptop and it turned out great 🤣.

thats a 130w 3060 also, not bad for a 90w gpu.

my omen is capped at 115w but it performs close to a desktop 3060 with a small undervolt, stock in timespy I get 8500 give or take a little for gpu score, it's the cpu thats killer, it allows framerates to get above 300fps and allows newer games on low settings to actually hit 144hz. but it thermal throttles on my particular laptop its not common but happens. most people like I said earlier are reporting temps below 70c which is insane for a thin and light.

when I first got this thing I could run at 4ghz full throttle for hours and peak at 80c which is incredible. now after running it for a month im getting like 90c at 4ghz with a 0.35 undervolt max fans and like 20 percent cpu usage

great review below

https://www.notebookcheck.net/HP-Omen-16-laptop-review-Powerful-RTX-3070-gaming-laptop-with-unnecessary-drawbacks.570237.0.html

also I'm getting 80-84c locked at 3500mhz so I guess I don't have a faulty unit as in notebookcheck says it stablised at 3.5ghz and peaked to 100c and averaged 84c

bang on and makes me happy, perhaps I was asking for too much

I would repaste. I saw the same with mine after some months of use, in general factory applied TIM is not that good in terms of quality and application.

This is my Geralt pondering over whether play Gwent or do some kind of mission about a girl.. can't remember.

that's an old screenshot from 3 years ago at least but I can tell you this: 1080p, all settings where at high, shadows medium, hairworks off (this setting is awfully demanding) and I remember that walking through streets of Novigrad, the marketplace and the square with Vivaldi's bank, with a lot of NPCs doing their things I had around 120 FPS average. And I also remember that Kaer Morhen was particularly demanding in comparison to other biomes, there I had around 110-115 FPS average, even though there were no NPCs strolling around. In every other location - a less demanding one -, let's say a forest, seashore, the woods in general I had 125-141 FPS.

TBH W3 ran quite well but it was inconsistent as I remember in terms of performance v/s location. In fact, in that screenshot I had 141 FPS while walking through Novigrad with several NPCs behind my back doing their stuff, and I suppose in front somewhere in the draw distance.

Edit: you know? I remember a setting in Nvidia control panel that was killing my framerate, it was Low Latency Mode, I not knowing what I was doing, and expecting who knows what, had that option in ultra, then turned it off. that setting alone ate at least 20 FPS.

its sick and IMHO the best, it has AI and the whole 9 yards. maybe not as good as photoshop but nothing is missing. its my favorite as I don't like spending hours tweaking a  picture and would rather get down to the nitty gritty

Checking in with my Omen 16.1" 2021 edition with 11800H and RTX 3070 115w 1440p 165Hz G-Sync/Advanced Optimus 🙂

Repasted it recently with Honeywell PTM 7950 phase change thermal pad/sheet.

https://ibb.co/KmPpN6j

I'm also using 32gb Dual Ranked Kit of 2933Mhz CL17 Gear 1 instead of the stock 3200Mhz CL22 Gear 2. My biggest gripe is the completely locked down BIOS. If I had access to the Advanced BIOS to tune the memory and run Gear 1 at 3200Mhz CL16 the laptop would be perfect but I haven't found a way in yet.

I picked mine up at Best Buy when they had the $1499 sale on it.

For the specs the price was hard to pass on.

If the laptop is under warranty I would RMA and ask for a refund. If a product is almost brand new it shouldn't be giving that underwhelming performance. My laptop, an older model was performing great out of the box, I remember throwing at it demanding games for several months after I decided to repaste it because Cyberbug 2069 was melting my CPU regardless of the aggressive undervolting applied.

Those temps, clocks and load are not good. Still, if you like the laptop you can always repaste (be careful about voiding the warranty) but don't expect a miracle.

This is the part where many users in this forum start to rant about the poor design of laptops in recent years, lets see:

  • Thin and light stupid garbage = insufficient cooling (not enough heatsink/fans) = gets really hot
  • Every year more powerful CPUs and GPUs = MOAR POWARRRR = gets really REALLY hot
    • How they address this? = Liquid metal TIM from factory + limiting the power available (each manufacturer sets those values restricting the wattage after they notice that the 'engineers' behind the design failed spectacularly)

just my 2 cents.

So i had pretty much decided on MSI for my next laptop but I ran across this.  How would I find out if it has Gsyn, MUX etc?

https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/pdp/omen-by-hp-laptop-17t-ck100-509w5av-1

well from my experience, in the past HP listed explicitly a G-Sync panel when it's available at the 'customize and buy', also the MUX switch at least on my laptop is non existent, because the intel HD graphics are disabled and locked at the BIOS. But you can always send them an email asking for a particular model.

it has mux well it should.

512gb isnt enough

I bought 2 msi laptops in my life and both had major design flaws, my last hp laptop had 0 issues and lasted 6 years even sold it in great condition..this laptop omen 16 is utterly amazing, great specs and features. the 3060 wont disappoint. avoid msi as often time their fans burn out after a few months as per countless youtube videos and my personal experience

My last two gaming laptops have been MSI and I have had great luck with them, that's why I have been thinking about the GE 76 but I know things have changed a bit in the last five years.

In your place, if I had the budget and currently looking for new hardware, I would start asking the veterans around the forum about Clevo, Sager, Eluktronics, XMG, and others, as I understand those brands are focused about custom hardware, custom software and oriented to the tinkerer or demanding user. What I mean is, the big and common brands like HP, Lenovo, Dell, etc, tend to be 'use our hardware/software as we designed it or get lost', if that's what you mean with that the things have changed.

if I had 2000, I'd vote sager. I bought a 6990m sager back in the day and holy smokes was it solid. 0 issues and great temps wicked performance.....brandnames are not important. hp omen 17 is a great laptop and you will not be dissapointed
