So just like that ends the true Clevo DTR platforms X170 being the last one. Everything else from now on will be BGA junk.

It looks it, at the same time they are missing a trick. Yes Intel might have killed support with MXM on Alderlake however many people would snap up the chance for a Socketed AMD system with an MXM GPU.

Will go for an AMD system with MXM but they did not produce something like that.

A 17.3 socketed AMD CPU with MXM was my dream since like forever.

Probably wouldn't even have to mod the cooling system with one of those...

Imho weight is the root of the problem. Why the hell manufacturers want to fight Thermodynamics by making these Mexican tortillas of laptops expecting them to dissipate 300w or more of heat generation???

I would be absolutely fine with an AMD DTR system. Give me a 5950x or even an upcoming 5800X3D option. Even a 6000 series would be fine.

I dont have the money for that kind of system but would relish the opportunity to claim one as my own.

It holds more merit to have an AM5 socket machine, especially if you dont have to constantly redesign the board for a minor update.

Yep Intel your lucky to get two upgrades per socket, AM4 has been a champ. I would expect AM5 to be the same too so it would make more sense to use AMD Socketed CPU's from a tooling stand point. We know it can be done as there are laptops out with Socketed AMD chips in them but then they fore go the MXM which is utter madness.

I don't want 300W of power. Put whatever components fit the thermal budget, that's fine. Just make them socketable. 75W GPU + 55W CPU is fine for me, I have a desktop for anything more powerful.

Wait how did intel kill MXM with alder lake? MXM is just PCIe so as long as the machine is either hooked up to the dGPU directly to the display or if there's a intel iGPU there should be Optimus support.

Oh I've seen this. It's not because alder lake doesn't support MXM. It's because support for MXM in general is pretty much dead. Only a few companies providing nVidia Quadro MXM cards support it at this point.

No idea how much longer that will go on but we got new Quadro Ampere based cards coming soon. Probably useless for X170 owners since they got 3080/3070 MXM cards already anyways.

Seems every company has pretty much stopped making DTRs. Looks like X170 & Area-51m R2 were the last DTRs. I still plan to upgrade my M18xR2 to Quadro A4500 (RTX 3070) when they're released this year. Quadro MXM may be the only options for current users of DTRs.

ugh. Horrible news
I guess with the silly prices of new cards in general the DTR niche and aftermarket MXM mod scene is deader than ever. I'd risk maybe $1k on a 3080 MXM to see if it worked with the possibility of getting most of it back if it didn't

At least we have eGPU as a fallback and we just have to hope we can hack the power limits on CPUs to keep them interesting for those of us with exotic cooling methods
(Speaking of which, I'm fixing up my watercooled P870DM3 at the moment, I better be super careful)

I live vicariously through your R2 upgrades, can't wait for the A4500!. Definitely not in my budget these days.

If I did have a spare $1500 I'd probably buy a new set of golf clubs.
