TBH except for the MSI Titan GT77 - 12U, the X170 is still one of the most powerful out there atm.

although it looks quite sad if this is indeed the X170 successor, i havent given up hope yet that there might be another successor or at least another submodel that is not exclusively Intel (CPU & GPU).

I still have a bit of hope for the future but they should not imply that this thing is as good as it gets and soil the legacy of the last true DTR which was the X170. Why name it X270 when clearly it is NOT the pinnacle of performance?

Other companies can do better jobs with BGA books and I doubt that Prema will want to touch this one with a 10 foot pole so why even imply this is something special with regard to performance when at most it is a very special and very weird kind of fuck up?

Clevo on youtube about the X270:

Compared to the MSI GT77 / X17 that trailer is a joke as is the laptop.

While I have not that many issues with companies producing mostly crap as apparently this is needed to stay afloat these days it would be nice if they kept at least one big and respectable device at the top.

As this generation may be a bit difficult and not worth the effort with the MXM form factor and the Geforce TI chips I could even understand it a bit if they went LGA for the CPU and soldered in the GPU in a chassis derived from the X170. They could surely add a few improvements like allowing only one power brick while traveling etc. Kind of a dry run for the future where the 40x0 cards should give a substantial performance boost.

Instead they use a rather standard run of the mill case and slap an X270 label on it - crazy!

Here's another tragedy from Clevo.... An new LGA model that perform worse than an fully fledged BGA Jokebook. Yep, Clevo ain't what they was before.

I guess this is what happens out of the box when you combine jokebook cooling and a socketed high end CPU.

I was wondering, if this community will outright wither and die, if there will be only BGA builds left to talk about and the non-BGA builds cannot be upgraded anymore?

The hate for BGA is oozing from all threads in here, so there is that.

Personally, i don't care about the hate, because my BGA doesn't offer anything to target, since it has been running perfectly for 7 years now. And with Linux it will easily reach 10 years and beyond. Even Windows 11 is running without issues on an external SSD.

Do you think, the community will be capable to exist with BGA-only builds? TBH, as before with NBR, i only got there because of Clevo. For Dell, Lenovo etc. i can go to any other tech community for help as well. Even for mods. And manufacturers with modular parts like Framework already have an active online community in the Fediverse.

First of all it is a much more bitter pill to swallow if a manufacturer of socketed like Clevo goes BGA only but that is not the only issue. There is also a lack of successors that are still top of their class like the Clevos of old. If you look at the threads it is mostly about socketed flagship laptops that are kind of exciting whereas a middling effort like the X370 isn't.

With everybody else having gone BGA I would not have blamed Clevo as much for a BGA monster with at least 325W combined CPU and GPU power, up to 192GB memory, 4 SSD slots and an 18" screen but instead we get utter mediocrity that is not even that light weight. If it wasn't for companies like Schenker / XMG and some companies that offer Linux systems with the Clevo chassis they would be completely irrelevant by now.

Another thing that unfortunately bothers me about the new notebooks are except the BGA chips, the USB ports are becoming less and less or also the 2.5 inch slots will disappear sadly...i saw 18 inch notebooks with just 2 usb ports and no 2.5 drive...and only two m2 pcie slots 😅

My next upgrade might be the x170 or most likely an ITX desktop PC

but currently I'm still very happy with my 775dmg3 sooo....

I have both an x170 and x370. The x170 can easily sustain 250w loads at 45db while the x370 struggles with 215w at 60db. It also has worse speakers, high pitched fan noise, a worse feeling trackpad and keyboard. The x370 chassis gets very hot to the touch and I find the x170 much more comfortable to use on my lap despite it being heavier.

The sad part is the x370 could be thicker but isn't because someone decided that thinner is better even if it compromises performance.

Desktop - Xeon W7-2495X, 64GB DDR5-6400 C32 ECC, 800GB Optane P5800X, MSI RTX 4080 Super Ventus 3X OC, Corsair HX1500i, Fractal Define 7 XL, Asus W790E-SAGE SE, Windows 10 Pro 22H2

Clevo PE60SNE - 14900HX, 32GB DDR5-5600 CL40, 4TB WD SN850X, RTX 4070 mobile, 16.0 inch FHD+ 165hz, System76 open source firmware, Windows 10 Pro 22H2

I can confirm this from my friend...he also finally decided to upgrade from his x170 to capriva x370 but after a month Due to the temperatures, he ended up selling it cheaper again...he even tried a few small cooling mods but unfortunately it didn't help...

The x170 definitely has the best cooling solution with its massive radiator.

In fact, it is very sad to see only all these new models with their bga chips soldered on the board and very mediocre cooling. They definitely have their advantages for those who appreciate mobility, more slim design but I just can't bring myself to love something like that.

There is also probably no hope that we will ever see at least some of the new series of video cards in mxm format from Clevo. That would be great too actually, and I keep waiting for a miracle.
