DuckW
Hi guys, I'm considering between these 2 systems. Which one you think is better in terms of mod and upgradability? In my opinion after research, they seems similar, just different appearance. Thanks
panda_zzz
The systems themselves are quite similar. The stock max processors are quite similar, despite the generation difference https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-4940MX-vs-Intel-Core-i7-3940XM/m9756vsm7092 The maximum RAM capacity is the same. However, as far as can be judged from user reviews, the m17x r4 has fewer problems with the latest generations of graphics cards - for some reason the Ranger does not always supply full power to the mxm slot. As a user of m17x r4 I will note some problems with the remnants of the soft touch coating and perhaps only me - hoarse low frequencies in the speakers (although the speakers themselves I changed to new ones from China)

That is, the 3rd generation will be more powerful with the same heating. It seems to heat up less. Regarding the M17x R4 - I like the glass, because under it the colors on the matrix do not look as grainy as on the matte one of the 17 R1. I also like the keyboard better on the M17x R4. And the M17x R4 has a removable battery. Regarding video cards, it was already said earlier that the M17x R4 has no problems. And the 17 R1 will have problems with video cards newer than Maxwell. So, I would prefer the M17x R4. but decide for yourself, maybe you like the design of 17 R1 better and the price may vary too much. DuckW
Thanks guys, looks like I will go with the M17x R4. Just love the design, now time to look at GPU upgrade options. It seems like another deep rabbit hole 😁.

Upgrade options are roughly the same although R4 does not struggle with RTX upgrade (17r1 and 18r1 have a TDP glitch with quadro RTX from PNY). Plus R4 motherboard is stronger than Ranger's (quality of CMS, power rail from CPU, MXM power...) 4930mx is marginaly faster than 3920xm so CPU wise, there's virtually no difference. 17R1 screen replacement is way easier though, as R4 has the damn glass cover with 3M tape...
