M17x R2 PASCAL UPGRADE

I think I actually found a short after all! The second large flat pin from the right side of the card (top facing up) is shorted to the pads on the screw holes, and so is the pin underneath it on the other side of the PCB. I'm pretty sure those screw pads are ground, and if they are, then one of my power rails is shorted to ground after all.

Based off of the short on the power rail I tested shorting all of my MOSFETS to ground, and found that one of them has substantially less resistance than the rest (90% less). I will keep trying to asses the board but i might have found the issue.

1080 should work in M17xR4. Size is slightly bigger if you ordered Aetina 1080 like the rest of us.

It is wired for eDP so it'll work with 120Hz display or if you are using 60Hz display, as long as you see both intel gpu and nvidia gpu it'll work as well.

Hey ssj92 I tried an aetina gtx 1080 in my m17xr4 and got an Orange BSOD also tried many vbios and drivers from Aetina website but nothing worked so went back to P4000 and it runs great

Yes Win 10, It worked for a few hours but after a restart gave a blue screen and tried quite a few different drivers and vbios but only after a restart from driver install. The orange one was the last and gave up, went back to the P4000 and running real smooth. The gtx 1080 only gave a problem after driver install restart it would BSOD after POST

I even got this score https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/73753021

Also in the m18xr2 gave BSOD but ran ok before restart, it happens after restart after driver install. It seemed ok until a restart

Look for gpu hardware scheduling in settings and make sure it is off. I got bsod with rtx 3000 and p4000 when this setting was on:

I don't recall if it was on or off with the 1080 but it is off now with P4000. I will give it another try. Any suggestions on vBios for the 1080 or should I put the original it came with, but I dont know if the original I got it with is the stock vBios. I now have quite a few from techpowerup.com/vgabios

Tried again and get BSOD (blue) during driver install. Newest drivers (512.95-notebook-win10-win11-64bit-international-dch-whql.exe) Tried custom and express

Just tried 436.02-notebook-win10-64bit_Aetina and get code 43, but at least no BSOD

Original Aetina vBIOS. How are you installing drivers? You need to modify the INF

Modify INF is no problem, I do all the lines according to device manager hardware IDs and go down the list, fill in just like in your video and nvidis installer has no problem then windows asks if I want to install and I hit install anyway. The P4000 gets installed the same way and has no problem. I just put back the P4000 just now and it runs Great!!! That must be the best Deal for a card I ever found thanks to you, and the seller I keep a tab on!

Yes I'm in U.S. I have the vBIOS I extracted with GPUZ but I don't know if they are original aetina. The card was purchased on ebay from "noexcuse" claiming "open box" and I don't know if the card is any good. I can put it in my dropbox and you can grab it or if I can post it here IDK

Did you have to modify heatsink to install this gpu? Have you made sure all components are properly covered with thermal pads?

Too bad you're not in California, I was going to suggest meeting up and checking out the card. You could try it in your M18xR2 but it'll require heatsink mod and I doubt your M17x is the problem.

I can try modifying vBIOS by lowering power and clocks but you can only flash using a programmer. Do you have a programmer? If not try using msi afterburner to undervolt the card and see if it helps with bsod.

That sounds like a possible solution, I'll pick up a programmer. I also tried in the m18xr2 had same problem but just Blue BSOD, but it ran long enough to do Firestrike demo https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/73750402

in m17xr4 and also in m18xr2 but cant find that shortcut. This tells me the card is good

And yes I had to file the heatsink for the power plug housing in the upper right corner and an area on the left side, its a tripple pipe and the P4000 is running pretty cool

What is a good vbios programmer tool recomendation?

If it crashes without a load there’s some other issue. When did you buy this?

It crashes at 2 different processes, depending on the drivers, it may crash during driver install or after a restart after driver install. I think older drivers like in the 472 crashes after restart but the later like 512 crash during install, but not sure it might be the other way around. I would have to swap the card and go another round but want to wait on the programmer so I can try different vBIOS. I really thought I was changing the vBIOS because the cmd window seemed to say successful, but going back to a card that works (P4000) my memory starts to get sketchy of what really happened. It gets nerve racking when looking for a solution and giving up knowing the other card works.

I bought the card Mar 20, 2022 and gave good feedback, dont think a return is possible. But this 1080 deffinatly working because before a restart I was able to run Two Firestrike benchmarks (https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/73750402  and https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/73753021)

Strange the score difference but maybe it was OC settings. I also got a benchmark with 1080 in the m18xr2 but that also was getting BSOD.

Its so much easier to swap in m17xr4 its a pleasure in comparrison

I know this is about the previous topic, but that 1080 I was talking about? I just got my hands on an eeprom programmer, and decided to check the VBIOS side by side with the manufacturer one. Both start out with the same manufacturer date, version, and everything is identical to the T. 3/4 of the way through the one that was on there however, the bios file peters out into FFFF values, and becomes empty space, whereas the manufacturer one continues much further and looks a lot more functional. Considering the mismatch in files, and yet matching versions and dates, I think I may have just found the issue. I don't have the m17x with me right now, but I'll be testing it once I do. If the 1080 works out, then I will finally be trying the p4000 in the M17x R2 long term. 🙂

The one with FFFF values has the UEFI gop portion removed from vBIOS. This is what I have been trying to do with vBIOS editing to get newer GPUs working in older systems but for me it hasn't fully worked yet. Once I receive my older AW I will do more testing.

There is probably a "proper" way to do it. Could you upload the vBIOS with FFF and the manufacturer one here so I can take a look?
