Bottlenecker3Billion
I need a custom heatsink for my project of putting a 4090M in an alienware 17 R1. The orginal gpu, a R9 M290X, has the die on a different part of the mxm board. Because of this, the heatsink wont fit the gpu. Does anyone know where I can find one? Kalman
I am pretty sure you have to make one by yourself. It is possible to make from your original one? Clevo P870DM2 9700k RTX3080 Clevo P775TM1 9400F GTX1080
ÊtaPegasus
You could try yo use an aftermarket full copper heatsink (the ones mande by Cicichen on ebay). The bracket is screwed into the heatsink, so you can just modify the holes and then accomodate the misplaced core. I was thinking of doing so myself with an HP Rtx 3000 but I sold my Alienware 17 R1 in the meantime. I'll try to find a photo of the heatsink to illustrate my words. SuperMG3
Isn't the AW17 R1 problematic like the AW18 R1? Because you are stuck with 100W max and sometimes the graphics card throttles to 55W. I know that because I used a 3080 115W in the AW18.. If you want a strong heatsink, you have to create a sketch or a 3D model in CAD, that's what I did then find a manufacturer in Alibaba. But putting RTX cards on these Alienware aren't worth it. Try use an Alienware M18X R2, no TDP problems.
ÊtaPegasus
A solution to the TDP throttle issue have been found last year by @Jerryzago you should read his topic "Alienware 17 R1 fan issue" in wich he details the procedure to follow in the unlocked bios. At the time, he managed to use the full 80w TDP of the PNY Rtx 3000 without the weird throttles. I concur with you about the usefulness of putting an Rtx card in the Alienware 17 R1, it will be heavily bottlenecked by the Cpu 1 Laptops : Alienware 17 R1 | i7-4940mx @4.0GHz | Nvidia Quadro P4000 | 32Gb G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1866MHz --> Sold Dell Precision 7550 | i7-10850h | Nvidia Quadro RTX 5000 Max-Q | 64Gb DDR4 3200MHz Desktop : Asus Rog Strix B550-F Gaming Wifi | Ryzen 7 5800x | Sapphire Nitro+ RX 6900XT | 32Gb G.Skill Trident Z DDR4 3200MHz
