Signex Posted October 2, 2025 Posted October 2, 2025 Hello I bought a m18x r2 with a 970m 6gb. I can't get newest drivers to install. They still support it, but I think the hardware Id do not match which results in driver saying GPU not recognized. How do I modify the drivers? EDIT: Omg halleluja for nvcleanstall i finally got it to install!
Jerryzago Posted October 2, 2025 Posted October 2, 2025 Yes. Nvcleanstall is our friend since we mainly have not supported GPUs in our systems. I think natively, the 970m was supported for the AW 18, not the M18x R2 Alienware M18x R2 / i7 3720qm -> i7 3940XM / Dual 7970m -> 980m SLI -> HP Quadro RTX 3000 Alienware 17 R1 / 4710MQ -> 4930mx / 880M GTX -> PNY Quadro RTX 3000 HP 8570w / i7 3820qm / Quadro K2000M HP DV6500 / i7 T7200 -> i7 T9500 / 2GB RAM -> 4GB RAM / Atlas OS

Would a 1070 work without modding the laptop? i have never done upgrading a gpu in a laptop. I could get a 980M for 112 euro but i think a 1070 would be better.
DoenerBoy123 Posted December 3, 2025 Posted December 3, 2025 Depends on which 1070 you'd like to use. The MSI one needs some cutting at the MXM slot and modifications on the heatsink. With the Zotac GTX 1070 im using you only need to modify the heatsink to make it fit. GPU fan control won't work with the Zotac cards which is why I added a switch to the laptop that forces the GPU fan to run at full speed. The 10xx series GPU don't have any kind of LVDS output, so you need an unlocked bios and have to set the graphics option to SG(switchable graphics) Alienware Area 51 ALX R7 5800X 32GB DDR4 3200MHz RTX 2080 Ti FE (Full Custom Loop) Alienware M18x R2 I7 3840QM 4.2GHz 16GB DDR3 1600MHz GTX 1070(Zotac MXM, 10 MOSFETs) Alienware M17x R4 I7 3630QM 16GB DDR3 1600MHz GTX 1080 150W 8GB(Zotac MXM 3.0B) MacBook Pro 16 2019 I7 9750H 16GB DDR4 2133MHz Radeon Pro 5300M Cevo P775TM1-G I9 9900K 16GB DDR4 2600MHz RTX 2080 And lot's of other stuff in my hobby corner (old Clevo's 'n' stuff like that)😄
