Isn't the 4050 a MXM type A? M17x R4 works with MXM type B? Maybe it will fit in the slot but you will not be able to screw it in place, and stock heatsink won't fit!

A-type cards fit into B-type card slots without any problems. The reverse situation is practically impossible (except in very rare cases)

If that 4050 is anything like A4500 was, then you are going to have a hard time getting it recognized. I recommend SG mode in M17xR4. And if that doesn't work, try my M18xR1 trick. Use M18xR2, primary slot a gpu that works in PEG and then gpu2 will be RTX 4050.

Good luck

Yes if it comes to that, the card lists DP/HDMI/EDP so if it does not work in m17xr4 with LVDS screen then I will try in m17xr4 with 120hz screen EDP and take out the P4000 and put it in the other. Then if all fail I would like to try the 2nd slot of m18xr2. These old laptops have alot of options LOL. I recently put a T2000 in Precision M4700 and its more powerful than M6700 now. T2000 is an A card, but it has a tab on it preventing installing in M6700, but it also should fit in m17xr4. Seeing how well the T2000 works and seeing a post here on the forums about RTX 4060 mxm A card an ebay selling for $600+ I decided to go back to xvision for $280

The screw holes line up exactly to the board and the heatsink. Only part of the heatsink overlaps and covers nothing, but it should be more than the cooling the card should ever need

Please do post pictures when you will make the install. I was sceptical about this (fitting an A GPU to a B slot). Though I have a quadro M2000m lying around for testing, I didn't go forward.

OK, Thanks for reminding me, I am not the picture person in the house, my wife keeps me busy unloading her phone all the time, I just seem to overlook that job until it's too late. How many times I assembled my PC and sat back and said Damn I wish I took a pic!

@ssj92 I was checking specs and the RTX 4050 mobile has DisplayPort 1.4a compared to P4000 has DisplayPort 1.4, I think DisplayPort 1.4a is backward compatible. Just keeping my hopes up cause the P4000 works with LVDS and EDP 120hz screens

They're all backwards compatible. The real question will be if the RTX 4050 is wired for eDP and has proper firmware for it too. LVDS should work if the card doesn't have a weird issue like my A4500 did. Where it may need resizable bar/above 4g decoding

According to the spec sheet it is DP/DP/HDMI/EDP

does the rtx3000 card work over edp with the display at m17x r4?

No, the m17xr4 with 120hz didn't work with the RTX 3000 but I don't remember if I tried it in pure UEFI mode which is how  the P4000 works now. I would like to have tried it but I damaged 1 of my RTX 3000 when I pulled off the x bracket installing it in the M6700 cause the heatsink has its own special screw setup. I never encountered an x bracket that was glued on so tight. A very intelligent member of this forum

@Aaron44126 said I should have used a heat gun, which I have,I would have pulled out my hair if I had some! So I'm not pulling out my working RTX 3000 from my m18xr2 but for a similar $$$ the RTX 4050 is the next experiment

OK the card came and does not work in m17xr4 with 60hz LVDS screen in SG mode with EUFI settings both with and without Legacy option ROM enabled or disabled

The m17xr4 with 120hz EDP screen also did not work in full EUFI and PEG mode. All I got was a screen flah, like a blink and 8 beeps, I did not try SG cause it is not capable of it and didn;t want to flash cMos and have to go thru the GTX 680m reset instalation.

The card has some high resistors so I took a copper plate from an old m18xr2 CPU heatsink that got damaged in the past and set it on the m17xr4 heatsink and it sat llevel. The m17xr4 with 60hz screen didn't even show in BIOS or device manager. It is looking like @ssj92 said to try it in 2nd slot of m18xr2 but first am going to try 2nd slot of Clevo P870DM3-G. I am very reluctant to open m18xr2 cause it is running so well I am afraid of "The Rabbit Hole"
