How does the "Rank" thing work?

Sandy Bridge

Recommended Posts

Every day or so, I'm getting noticed that I've increased my rank.  Cool, so now I'm a Contributor.  But what's it mean, and how do I find out why I'm increasing my rank?  I can see that I have 148 "points" to my next rank, and I can see the ranking of ranks if I go to https://efgxt.net/profile/96-sandy-bridge/badges/, but it's still mysterious what they are exactly.

Desktop: Core i5 2500k "Sandy Bridge" | RX 480 | 32 GB DDR3 | 1 TB 850 Evo + 512 GB NVME + HDDs | Seasonic 650W | Noctua Fans | 8.1 Pro

Laptop: MSI Alpha 15 | Ryzen 5800H | Radeon 6600M | 64 GB DDR4 | 4 TB TLC SSD | 10 Home

It seems like it is an attempt to gamify the act of forum participation -- to hijack the parts of our brains we already have in order to build a better online community -- all to reward forum participation:

- starting a topic

- reply or answer a topic

- getting a conversation going

- liking/repping a post

- etc

Those are my guesses. Take a look at Aaron's account as an example. Look at the reps/achievements/badges he has already earned for his participation:

Look at what he has already been able to contribute in a short time (under one week)!!

Since almost 100% of us came here from NBR, I would've liked to keep some sort of status like we had there. Not necessarily the post count since it is a new forum but something like the rep we had there and/or the original join date, would've been cool to move here.

You can click your name in the top right to see how close you are to the next rank.  You get points for posting, and also if other people react to your posts ("like", etc.), and maybe other stuff too.  It seems that you also get points for sending PMs?  (That might be why I have more than some others with around the same post count.  And I've started a few threads.)  As you'd expect, the number of points you need to rank up increases with each rank.

I found these other stats pages.

1. Go to your profile and click on "Recent badges" to get a page that shows all of the ranks and where you stand on the forum (percentage-wise). [Edit] - Reading more carefully, I see that you already found this.

2. https://efgxt.net/leaderboard/

I saw the leaderboard after it notified me that I "won" a couple of days.  Not really trying to.  😛 Looks like a three way tie yesterday and it probably gave me the reward because my name dominates alphabetical order.

I also feel that ranking up is a bit too easy.  I have less than 30 posts and I am on rank 6 out of 14 somehow.  I don't know what the later levels are like though.  Hopefully we don't have everyone sitting at the top rank after 2-3 months.  Also, going by these "stats" I am one of the top members here now, but I was never among the top at NBR and I expect that I won't be top for very long if some of the other NBR members get over here and start being similarly engaged.

Alright, so there are a ton of different conditions (by default) to gain points and badges.

I haven't touched anything as far as that goes yet but we can set certain conditions for badges (which can also get tied to points).

There's also badges which can be "awarded" for whatever you'd like. Example:

Automatic badge example:

Most of this functionality has been left default (since the main goal was to get the main functionality of the forum up and running)
