um....  ok guys LOL i just sold my defective 9950X3D on ebay for a THIRD of the price i paid for it. it was gone within a few minutes, how insane is that?!?!

Probably someone who thinks they know better than you and can score a cheap working CPU they can fix. Once they realize they can't, they will either request a refund or commit return fraud against a retailer. While that sounds cynical, I've stopped buying open boxes due to the latter reason.

Sub 3ghz across the board = decidedly average (maybe a touch below at sub 2900) but still a beautiful card. 🙂

5090 is ~62% faster than my 5080 FE stock for stock (186fps vs 115fps)

5090 is ~~67% faster than my 5080 FE OC vs OC (+300/+3000 on both 210fps vs 126fps)

This is the first test with both capped out to 99% on the same drivers (576.02) / install.

This Astral 5090 just wrecks it and applying the same OC, the gap just gets wider with the much better silicon in the Astral and cooling.

I'm going to install this 9070xt next and give it a proper clean install to give it every chance it has to get where it needs to get to shine as bright as it can.

Sheesh,  and here I thought @Rage Set was the resident storage nut!  🤣

Yes, I am embarrassed by my storage addiction. I spent several thousand on storage alone over the past year and a half, yet the fastest GPU in all of my rigs is a 4070 Super. LOL, don't judge me 😅. I was intent on replacing all of my 1 and 2TB SSD's with 4TB and even a few 8TB NVMe drives before prices reached where they are now. I ignored common sense and went with drives that had DRAM onboard, even though HMB isn't much of a speed killer if you have a lot of fast RAM. You live and you learn.

Although I see @Mr. Fox is slowly succumbing to storage addiction, 🤣

  3. Soon, I will likely be offering members of this particular thread free decorative fan grills (all you have to do is pay the shipping). I am currently testing the best materials to use, as some filaments are prone to warping or even melting under temps above 50 to 60C.

Here is an example that I like https://www.printables.com/model/562113-skull-fan-grill-120mm I am also designing my own.

At MSRP, it is the new price:performance leader on all charts. That's where it shines. It clearly beats the 5070 and trades blows with the 5070ti. RT has been greatly improved and is better than the 7900xtx in that category and in many games it is much closer to the 7900xtx than the 7900xt.

$599.99 for the 9070xt is a fantastic price.

"It is a great card for the price" is the final word on it.

That's why I would only pick up an MSRP model. AIB pricier models and it quickly loses its value to me.

Best Buy has 5 models listed, all XFX, and only one $600 model. The next is $750 and up they go. That's a hard pass on all but the MSRP.

That's a sweet link to Amazon for all their models too!

    ---

I was so disappointed to see the POS 12v-2x6 connector on the Taichi. That was heartbreaking. 😞

    ---

Here is a good review of the 9070xt from someone I like for AMD stuff who is unabashedly an AMD fan. It is showing the 9070xt, 7900xtx, 7900xt and 4080 Super all stock AND OC'd shootout for both with 9800X3D tuned up a bit.

He was able to get his Sapphire 2 8-pin model OC'd to 3300 and it is definitely holding its own even against the 4080 Super and 7900XTX (while still losing though obviously overall).

Massive gains in RT and it clearly outpaces the 7900xtx in RT but Nvidia is still top dog overall. Really wishing we could see a 575w 9090xt(x) level model with 24-32gb hit the market. This architecture has potential!

$599.99 it is a banger of a card.

The problem is a good amount of reviewers have stated that the MSRP models are essentially a limited-time deal. Most of the cards will go between 750 and 950. I knew the 600 cards were going to disappear quickly but I didn't expect the cards 850 and up to go that fast.

I 'may' go to Microcenter though, but I don't really want to drive an hour. We will see.

So much for the lies about AMD having good 9070 XT stock available. Another paper launch. I purchased one on NewEgg, checked out and got a confirmation email. A few minutes later a cancellation notice due to insufficient stock. Checked out twice at Amazon and same thing. And, scamming already happening. Prices increased in the past hour. So, eff them all. They can keep their janky overpriced lackluster GPU trash and kiss my hind end.

Why does RTX 5070 even exist? And 5070Ti is close to $1000 with the AIBs scalping prices.

Now it's up  to the AIBs pricing the new Radeon cards properly. If there is not major shortage, the prices should never be above $100 premium for the better custom cards. But that won't happen.

UK retailer confirms stock of 1,000 units of a single Radeon RX 9070 XT model at MSRP

OverclockersUK, one of the largest retailers in the UK, has conrmed today that they have over 1,000 Radeon RX 9070 XT cards in stock. The thing is, this is just one model from one brand, not the entire SKU stock. The retailer also confirms that there are several hundred Gigabyte and ASUS cards waiting as well, but there’s no mention of numbers or whether those are RX 9070 XT or non-XT models

NVIDIA's market value tanks again, with $200 billion wiped amid tariff fears

I think this will be one of the rare GPU launches that even with scalpers (they will attempt to buy up the MSRP cards), the chances of picking one up day one will be good. I want to get in before the tariffs truly hit.

That is a fantastic score bro! After using mine for a  day or so as is to establish baseline metrics on the stock 1TB, first thing I did was update the BIOS, swap in a 990 Pro 2TB and give it another clean install.

I'm real curious about the 9070xt. Pick one up to play with then upgrade the wife's 3080 is a potential. Looking at the reviews, better RT than the 7900xtx, falls right in between the 7900xt and 7900xtx but closer to the xtx than xt. Basically beats the 5070 outright and trades blows with the 5070ti all for 599.99.

Go back through my replies over the last few years. I've always said the 7900xtx was an absolute raster monster even dipping into 4090 territory from time to time but definitely on par with the 4080/S/5080 overall for raster.

I'm going to go cheap as possible. 🙂

I thought about going the cheapest route, but I want to ensure I get a card that handle 340W - then I can always undervolt when I don't have the power demands. I plan to use this card almost exclusively in Linux.

I'd rather buy that than support Nvidia right now. The way I see it is, these GPUs are going to only get better. If the 9070XT is anything like AMD's prior GPU's then the performance should only go up. The 7900XTX looks pretty amazing right now in rasterization.  It seems like it has come a long way.

I guess I am going to be shopping in the "midrange" and try to pick up a 340W 9070XT around $750ish. Hopefully the card hits at least 3.2Ghz.

Same. My next GPU, whenever that is, will probably be Intel or AMD. I liked my Arc GPU. I haven't ever liked any AMD GPU, so that tells you something right there.  I haven't ever liked AMD CPUs either, but I didn't approve of what Intel did with Core Ultra. So, I said screw 'em and so did lots of other people. It's not awesome, but also not terrible. Just kind of "meh" overall. But, the point is, Intel didn't get any money from me this time, and probably won't until they get their priorities straight and get back on track.

I know none of them care what I approve of, but I get to decide how to spend my money and I am not going to reward them for having dung for brains. I'm hoping (against hope probably) that there are enough people left that think like I do and if enough of us do not approve and make a conscious decision to spend (less of) our money on inferior brands they will have an ephiphany and pull their heads out of their butts, or lose a fortune, tank their stock and start losing investors. It will be what they deserve for being arrogant imbeciles with a false sense of immortality.

It happened to Intel. Nobody ever thought it would. The bigger they are, the harder they fall. NVIDIA is pushing their luck. It can happen to them, too. And, I hope it does... soon. Not so it can benefit AMD. I don't care about that. Just because they deserve it. They need to know what goes around comes around and it needs to cost them dearly with the only thing in the world they care about... money. They need to lose most of it and get a hard reset.

With the burning wuss-boy power cables, missing ROPs, betting everything on fake frame DLSS, AI bullcrap and whatever comes next for their fake performance spoofs, (plus who knows how many other gimps and latent engineering defects are waiting to be discovered,) they'll probably need less help than it would have required a few years ago. I hope we all get to enjoy watching the Green Goblin's lair get burned to the ground together. It doesn't take a big cut to bleed to death. Lots of smaller cuts will do the trick.

We need to stop behaving like lap dogs and start behaving like cunning wolves that hunt in packs, go for the jugulars, and take no prisoners.

This! This is why I stopped buying all of the latest, "best" after Nvidia's 30 series and Intel's 1700 platform. Now my new love is 3D printing - which, as I stated in the past, is like the old era of computing. You have those that build from the ground up, i.e. Voron, to go faster than anything on the market and those that buy ready-to-print devices that don't offer customization.

For the first time, in a long time, I have little interest in any new PC component for overclocking. I am just waiting until used 4090's hover around 1000 so I can pick one up for my CAD/Bender work.

  10. 3D Printing is akin to overclocking PCs. Let me explain. Like all of us in this thread, overclocking is the sport. Pushing hardware past its intended limits. Even if we are never going to use that redline performance for practical use cases. Then there are some that go beyond traditional overclocking and step into the realm of sub-ambient overclocking.

Both groups are represented in the world of 3D printing. These are the folks who care less about the end output (actual 3D prints) and more about building and modding the 3D printers themselves. Most take extreme pride in building the DIY 3D printers with significant hardware mods. You can easily spend over 10K on some of these machines.

Software wise...it looks like a lot of these software companies took a page out of the Asus BIOS book and I am only talking about the slicer applications. If you want complete software control over your custom 3D printer, the creative knobs are certainly there.

The 3D printer manufacturers are similar to computing companies. Prusa is akin to the Intel of old. One of the originators of 3D printers. Reliable (for the most part) 3D printers that allow total customizability and modding. Although, they have been stagnant while smaller 3D printer manufacturers have been eating their lunch lately. Creality is AMD of old in many ways. Offering lots of budget machines that require extensive rework by the end user to get working reliably, although they have some killer options that will match some of the competition at a much lower cost.

Finally, there is Bambu Labs which is essentially, a mix of Apple/Nvidia. BL 3D printers just work out of box and are known to be very reliable...at the cost of being stuck in a proprietary walled garden. There are still third-party companies creating hardware modifications, but nothing like Prusa's ecosystem.

I have entered a rabbit hole that I can see myself becoming increasingly addicted to exploring. Printing and holding your first 3DBenchy is a wonderful feeling.

EDIT: The 3DBenchy is a benchmark for 3D printers.

  11. Building out a 3D print farm, starting with the Bambu Labs P1S. My only concern is that many of the reviews on Bambu Labs products compare the company to Apple...it just works but modding is out the window. My initial goal is to design and print custom parts for PCs. My ultimate goal is to have a CNC machine. I have to keep telling myself to start small, hahaha.

I am also going to write a review for this product, stay tuned for that. If this endeavor ends up like I think it will, if any of you ever need a custom piece printed, let me know and I'll just charge the cost of materials.

no worries on that front, why would they waste that good AI silicon on consumers if theres no threat from AMD? besides, even IF they released a 5090 Ti a year later, it would only provide a small 10-15% bump and only be top dog for a year max before 60 series comes out. so either way u look at it, no reason whatsoever to sweat about a 5090 Ti 🙂

edit: @Reciever sorry for the double post mate, pls fuse together 🙂

I agree to an extent. My problem stems from owning several 3090's, thinking it would remain the top dog (even after the release of the 3080 Ti made it less relevant). Then Nvidia released the 3090 Ti (those owners didn't even get a full year before the 4090 came out) as a greedy slap to all 3090 owners. That is why I completely avoided the 40 series up, until the past month when I purchased a used 4070 Super at a really good price.

If Nvidia does this again, I will stop buying Nvidia products. I will not care how performant their cards are in the future.

  13. I am in a wait and see mode. The more I've researched W790, the more I see that Intel simply slapped "overclocking" as an afterthought. So I am not enthusiastic that Intel will fix its approach with W890.

As for AMD, I will give the 9950X3D a cursory lookover but I am not bullish on it either. The saving grace for that CPU is that I have a mobo available that will work with it, otherwise I am going to stick with the 7600X for longer.

The only thing I can look forward to hopefully is the 5090. Hopefully, Nvidia doesn't release a 5090 TI this generation or I am going to be seriously pissed.

I also enjoyed tinkering with the 11th gen so much. Memory OC was key.

8400 C38 with latest BIOS around 66ns. I imagine we can shave this down even more with CUDIMMs. Arrow Lake loses hard in some games, but it eeks out a victory in others from my testing. But it requires you to run high speed DDR5 and overclock the fabric.

So it's Ryzen first gen all over again. Instead of AMD competing with the 6950X/7980XE, it's Intel's turn to compete with the 13900K/14900K? The true end of an era.

    IMG_1557.jpg

Seeing all these leaks though, I'm sorta not feeling good. I'm trying to remain excited and hope it's still at least fun to tune and tinker with, but man, what a let down it seems to be rumored to be. I've said it before, who the F is in charge over there? Why do we have a useless NPU on a desktop CPU that will be paired with a huge RTX 4090 or 5090? Why do I need an NPU with a useless 13 tops? I mean the 5800X3D came out like 3 years ago? Why the F didn't Intel say dang, lets up the cache and slap it on hard. I know cache has it's drawbacks and penalties, but it seems to really help with latency prone chiplets/tiles.

Nope, Intel said give them a totally useless NPU, that will make all the reviewers blush.

    image.gif.ab391a699053b87538882cf7c258d604.gif

Outside of the idiotic Intel protections, my doubts about the 285K and the 1851 as a whole have tempered a bit. I think Intel allowing the E cores to potentially overclock like crazy is the saving grace.

I am very intrigued about this platform now.

EDIT: Guys, I think we need to relax. OC'ing isn't dead, at least not for guys like us. We will still be able to extract more performance out of these chips and some of the "guardrails" will be removed when Intel realizes people aren't happy.

In Jay's video, you noticed he said DLVR Bypass isn't available at launch. That means Intel is likely taking a wait and see approach.

Give it some time and I say, wait for the reviews.

5 overkill PC building trends that aren't worth the trouble -

    Quote

    Key Takeaways

    • Custom watercooling loops aren't worth the effort over AIOs due to minimal performance gains.
    • Modifying cases for specific builds is a dying trend; it's better to buy a unique case to stand out.
    • Delidding CPUs poses significant risks and is unnecessary just to get slightly better thermals in modern CPUs.
    • Dual PSUs and dual graphics cards are unnecessary for all but the most extreme workstations.

You only have to take a look at the comments to figure out this guy shouldn't be writing for a tech website. What in the heck happened to that website? I remember getting ROMs for my phones from this website and now they are hot take artists.

BINGO. My thoughts exactly. I would not be surprised at all if 12-14th gen are the last true overclocking platforms with all controls and knobs left unlocked. Intel higher ups are going to come down hard on all departments, and I really believe we might see overclocking heavily limited going forward, similar to AMD.

    Of note, https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/cpus/puget-says-its-intel-chips-failures-are-lower-than-ryzen-failures-retailer-releases-failure-rate-data-cites-conservative-power-settings

I find it highly interesting that this very well known and respected PC builder is actually finding AMD Ryzen 7000 fails quite a bit as well.

The key takeaway from Puget's data is how conservative they set their BIOS settings for both Intel and AMD. I.E. Puget sells workstation PCs where longterm stability is the selling point, performance is likely second or third.

AMD's 7000 series is a furnace with default settings just like Intel's initial "let the mobo makers choose whatever they want" settings.

I stated in the past few years that Intel was heading towards catastrophe. This was coming from me at a time when I was a proud self-proclaimed Intel fanboy. Admittedly, it was due to my now defunct company and having some direct contact with Intel. I saw the writing on the wall when the reps we were dealing with were changing every 4 to 6 months. Sure TO is high in consumer CS roles, but B2B reps generally stick around for years until promoted.

Intel will make it through this but they will be vastly different than they are now. I won't be surprised when they go fabless just like AMD.
