I noticed likes are limited--when I read a bunch of posts and like them, I would like to 'like' them too. I've noticed this as a trend in some forum softwares, but I never hit any limits on the old NBR with the like feature.

Tremendous effort and results! Unreal that so much data was rescued. I'm so thankful for that. I got everything I wanted for my 8760w and m6800 and started looking for some of my older laptops like the d610 and c400 and got what I could. I remember the day I found NBR I was telling myself that 'someday' I'd search for all my laptop model numbers since everything that is ever known about them would be here. I'm glad all that data was rescued so when my someday comes, I will find the results. What we have experienced calls to light a greater problem on the Internet of the loss of digital history. It is a serious problem that did not exist prior to the era of only digital. And everyone is on the delete bandwagon--your bank who limits the number of years they can 'find' transactions, your cell phone company that doesn't give you bills beyond a certain date, and more. As records in forms other than digital become scarce, the fragility of the digital format will become more evident as more data is lost. It is a crisis for human history, which will stunted to the end of the paper age as it is the only current, proven long term medium that stands the test of time for more than 10 years. This should be a wake up call for all of us that have digital archives, personal and professional. That being said, attempting to print out NBR would have been just as ludicrous as turning it off.

This would almost be an undertaking as big as the archive because the archive would have to be 'mined' for the post data and then that would have to be inserted into the database. Technically it is possible, but there are a few caveats to doing something like that since usernames, etc would have to be created that don't exist here or may under a different name. Still, this would be the best scenario for the existing posts, and username conflicts could be avoided by prefixing 'NBR-' to existing posts, which could be merged with an existing username here if the person is the same. A lot of hand holding and massaging to get something like this done, but I think this is one of the communities that would be strong enough to pull it off. I think in years to come this could be done, but I wouldn't think anything like this would be attempted for a few years and it's quite daunting.

Agreed, but nothing to worry about atm with the archive the current focus for most of us. You can always split this thread into various threads based on the topic to 'sort it out' later. 😉

I believe you're right as the urls it's currently processing don't seem to be forum ones. So that's great to hear. :) I believe I saw a post where someone downloaded that first chunk and it was corrupted. I hope it's not the source that is and this was just their download.

Nice! I've had to mess with themes before and the time it takes to tweak it in a major way like this can easily be much more expensive (time wise) than outsourcing it, hence the suggestion since the creator of the original seems to be pretty easy to reach. They might even have one ready for ipb that could be implemented fairly quickly.

Exploring the site styles at the old NBR, it seems that the style there was something everyone liked and felt at home with. I know that this is a an ipb powered board and not xenforo, but the style at the old site was actually created by a company called pixelexit.com. I think reaching out to that company to create a style similar in function to the old NBR for ipb would be a good idea since it would make this more like 'home' for many users. There will be a cost, but I think it will be well worth the investment to create the community in one place like it once was. Also, I noticed how on NBR they did something pretty brilliant--there were actually styles to make it look like vbulletin3 and vbulletin4. Now, on the surface this may not seem like much, but what if the community likes the format of another site as well--if you make this one look like that too, there is another feeling of 'home'. Thoughts?

Okay, so while the post I found says it is done, I found the status page of the actual archive bot and if you put in 'notebook' into the field, you will find that it is still archiving the site with 50GB+ and over half complete, but almost half still to go: http://dashboard.at.ninjawedding.org/3

Yeah, it's been hard to keep up with everything going on for sure. And the person that posted this also was the one communicating with archive so he was able to call and verify this before posting. I've even gone back to try to find the original post so I can link it here, but it was just a single post in one of the many threads about the site closing. 😞 I think I may have found it, but it seems to have been edited because there's nothing about contacting archive and confirming it's done: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/all-technologyguide-forums-will-close-jan-31-2022.837524/page-56#post-11139925

In one of the threads over at nbr, I saw that the crawl was complete and that they got 100% of it uploaded as warc files. I copied the links so I'll paste it here too so everyone has it: https://archive.org/download/technologyguide_forums_20220125 I haven't attempted to download any of it as I think a lot of people have been hammering it and it's at dialup speeds the last I saw someone post about it. Once things cool down, it should be easy enough to get them. Viewing these warc files though require a viewer to be installed, and my thinking was that if the viewer was installed here on this server with a copy of the archives, then all of the old site would be accessible directly here as well.

Yep, it was only thanks to your post that I found this. I hate design elements like this and that was one of the nice things about the existing NBR forum--clear, defined places to click and for what with no mystery. I know a lot of forum systems are moving away from that to present a 'clean' look. But a clean look starts to become a pita when you're having to hunt for what to click or wasting time clicking 3 times to get to what you want.

Holy cow, this would be unreal. But I think one of the issues with publishing this publicly is that it is 'too NBR' to be considered fair use, a derivative work, etc, and might get some legal attention because of it if the parent company chooses. That be said, if this is behind closed doors for 6 months or so and then published, I don't think anyone would notice or care anymore even if they did.

That's a good forum for sure. I'm going to save some pdfs for the 8760w and m6800 and some of my others if I have time.

Makes sense. I'd even say Monday can wait since the big push is to get everything before the place goes offline. So strange...nothing on my screen of the sort. I'm on the default theme too. I finished my pdfs of the M6800 owners thread, and now I'm off to find any other M6800 threads of interest.

I had to print 169 pages of posts to pdf, many of these 'pages' were actually 5-6 pages each. I guess I could even merge them all into one pdf file--I never thought of that. It won't be as good as the single lounge thread though, which I will probably also print to pdf for my own record. I've found that pdf seems to be the best format for archiving stuff. I've been working with converting about 40 years of operating business records to pdf for the last 10 years or so and aside from the very minor version changes, generally almost any pdf can be read by anything. The 'version game' on a lot of the other formats really puts me off since retrieval in a decade or so will be a nightmare. I'm working on the m6800 owners thread right now...only 46 pages of posts to go, lol.

Thank you so much for the explanation! Makes perfect sense as this effort has been a huge undertaking to say the least. I printed all 169 pages of that thread to pdf so I have them in case someone needs them, and I grabbed some of the other 8760w threads out there. Interestingly enough, the pdfs retained some of the hyperlinks so some posts that had links behind a word/etc, were captured. I hit the download limit a few times, but it was easy enough to swap to a different system on a different public IP and just continue where I left off. If I had a place to upload them to, I don't thing I'd have a problem sharing them all. I was logged in when I retrieved them, but I don't think there's anything important left behind in the pdfs from that from what I can tell so far. I'm sure a consolidation effort of all the crowdsourced downloads will be the next thrust as there are going to be missing pieces and a lot of people out there that may have those pieces.

Fantastic work and I even like the basic html presentation as it is far faster than any search system on any forum. 😍 In the future when it is done, I too would like a copy of the entire archive. I think if many of us have this copy, the data will surely never completely die off. Once I get back to working on my own forum which I have had to put aside to deal with family issues, I will probably also host a copy since I should have unlimited storage and bandwidth on my vps. What I wanted to post about was that one of the threads that I was personally about to start archiving to pdf (all 169 pages), is the 8760w owners lounge (http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/hp-elitebook-8760w-owners-lounge.581056/) and when I compared the wonderful 1 page archive here to the original, the archive seems to stop at post 550 while the thread currently goes to post 1689. Does anyone else see this, and is a function of what is currently processed or did not all the posts get grabbed?
