HP Elitebook 8570W - is it still good ? Hardware modifications
KbX replied to GuitarG's topic in Custom Builds
Ok, so good news for me i guess, thanks! It's not BIOS, it came with HP one and I've tried others, not even a backlight or a Pixel.... The GPU has to send the display sinal trough the right way of HP laptops, cause it also sends the sgnal to DisplayPort that requires a diferent "language" than the embedded screen. That's convertible outside, in the cable. It has to be a cable to convert from the LVDS 40 pin port to the 30 pin eDP for who's at least want to upgrade the laptop screen. Then, GPU is responsible for sending the eDP signal, but is scrambled inside MBoard wiring that is ready for LVDS and that wiring has to be converted again, outside, to the eDP that the screen is waiting. There are zbook's with LVDS screen, what do they use?- 344 replies

HP Elitebook 8570W - is it still good ? Hardware modifications

I bought a cheap GTX 1070 to try with my 8570w, but it only works via DisplayPort to an external screen. From the posts, I think we have the same problem. The GPU emits an eDP signal. I could also buy screen Innolux N156HHE-GA1 Rev. C3 which has a 30-pin connector and receives an eDP signal, but I suppose a simple 40-pin converter from the motherboard to the 30-pin of this screen isn't enough because the pins that go through the motherboard aren't in the correct place for EDP communication, and the wires have to be externally adjusted to the way the screen receives them. Am I correct in what I'm saying? Is this the adaptation I need, or i can buy the screen and it would work just with a 30 to 40 pin adapter? There are also DisplayPort to LVDS converters, but they are large pieces...- 344 replies

i never seen 8770w heatsink for sell, i have seen gtx970 heatsink but it requires grinding to fit, it was cheaper this way and i dont risk original heatsink i also don't have the materials to modify heatsink. on furmark temps keep climbing, can't have it on for mutch time I have the pin out, taped on 2 pins 5v one 3v and one ground but I am waiting for the fans.- 344 replies

I'm waiting for the fans to arrive to disassemble everything again, and bend the upper plate down, closer to the gpu and do do another cut to be able to close the case- 344 replies

those "dimsion" were exactly what i had. i think they were running a bit faster than the 1600mhz, see my CPU-Z, thats why i thought it was some wrong config. now i can only find used ones, i might buy just 2 sticks to try to see the diference in games. @erikmiskolin : nice to know you got it running 130hz, maximum i tried on my 1920x1080 was 75hz, but surely it can do more, my GTX 980 does not worths the efort of screen, so i try to play at 60fps with good image quality. i also managed to get my heat sink on, couldn"t dissolder pins (my solder pen is also fake from china)just removed the plastic and used super glue to attach the cables to the pins(no 12v, just 3v, 5v)and white termal glue EC360 to prevent shorts.GPU stays a bit lifted but straight. i always watched "GPU Hot spot point" temp before, never puted to mutch atention on core temperature. my fans didnt arrived yet, i am using a fan pad, but now, "Hot spot temp" stable at 90º or less, before i had-it sometimes at 95º and fans runnig fast and loud, core temp mutch more stable at 75º.new termal paste "hydronaut" but not well spreaded, it was just to testing, but i feel i can keep testing 😋 i can have all the fans at half of the speed than before, and now i can overclock GPU more, i am using core clock +81 and momory +190, no shutdowns, im playing witcher 3 at medium graphics 30/40 fps and destiny 2 at medium, 60 fps, can go to 40 fps in dense areas. 550 points on 3DMark demo, can do more with the overclock, but not stable for games. (record is 727 with same hardware, how?) i never see CPU reach 55w in games and 3.9 ghz, just 3.7ghz 3.8 some threads, coud it be cause of the cheap PSU 230w from china? i never letted GPU throttle, witch sensor makes it throttle at 101º? Hot Spot temp or core temp? Sory for my English- 344 replies

Thanks! I tried to grind it to the minimum size, but I might desolder it and find out which pins have 5 and 12 volts to connect the fans… I was trying to avoid disassemble everything...- 344 replies

Thank you! What a scam! I wouldn’t have noticed it on my own. I just asked for a refund and said they were fake. I might have to send them back to China. mistakes are expensive! Thanks! Got also to rethink my heatsink. The computer doesn’t turn on, just a black screen. Without it, everything runs normal. I consider myself lucky, because I applied too much pressure on the GPU while measuring the plate and even bending it in place. If it shorted or broke, it would be game over, and it’s still working, so I need to rethink the measurements so it sits right, with minimal pressure on the bolts and GPU. I already had it working with just the lower plate and some thermal pads, so it is possible to use the upper plate touching the original heatsink as well. The GPU will always stay a bit curved because it’s sitting on the CD/DVD bay connector. I believe it’s possible anyway. (I once had a phone that got smashed by a car wheel and stayed curved like the wheel. It kept working after I changed the screen, and the new screen forced the whole phone flat again.) Do you think I have the GPU shorting somewhere I can’t see but still not fully damaged, or could it just be the connection not letting the GPU go in far enough? Thanks for everything!- 344 replies

Nice to hear from you guitarG! I read everything from the beginning! That looks too small for me to do. I might take your idea of using some good speakers with an amplifier connected to the card slot… For now, I’m working on my cooling solution for the GPU, but I’m missing a drilling machine to do the upper plate. it might arrive next week. is there some place on gpu where I can tap 4v for a mosfet to run some fans ? If I understood well, you just put a new BIOS to use 2133 MHz RAM. How did you manage to use 1867 MHz on yours? Because my i7-3940XM arrived, but I don’t feel much difference, and these memories for now seem like money thrown away.- 344 replies

thanks myro, I am happy to show everything once it's done, for now it's just me planning. my parts are still traveling. deadalus: I don't think k1000m takes full advantage of monster CPU🤤 erikmiskolin: on mine it was nvcleaninstall who recomended the right driver, i allready tried diferent driver versions they all instaled but none worked. nvclean forces driver installation, never saw it saying its incompatible. does it get detected on device manager? search for an error code- 344 replies

Thankyou guitarG for your work! It might help millions! Nature sustainability, we should repair old components, not dump them and buy new ones. That’s for someone who doesn't care about money or nature. I also have an EliteBook 8570w which I am trying to mod to take the best profit of the hardware. I am now waiting for an i7-3940XM and 1866 MHz RAM, but I’ve got a GTX 980M running well, bottlenecked by the i7-3740CPU. It was here back then where I checked compatibility with this GPU, but I didn’t have time to read everything, now I've been trough all the posts... It was just plug and play, had to grind the plastic of the CD/DVD plug on the MB, but I can still connect an extension cable to maybe connect some fans or even a disk with an adapter. For cooling memories, I’m thinking of using two copper plates to cool the GPU memory (1.2 mm on top and 0.5 mm on the bottom). I’ll be relying on the original cooling for gpu processor. for the thicker plate that sits underneath, I might cut a section in the center and extend it upward (maybe make a cut in the upper plate to fit it through) so it rests between the GPU processor and the original cooler , to help the cooling system since i7 3940xm runs hot and GPU won't trotle down by memory temp. for Daedalus, I would’ve triggered the refund for much less. It has to at least give some kind of signal or backlight or something to prove it’s connected, so you can debug the errors. I’d say the GPU is broken, because if it’s just a black screen, the laptop isn’t aware the GPU exists.my bios is non csm mode cause i had hard time learning instal linux, and in post, when cold start, 2 images are shown loading windows uper side of hp logo not sure why. So, yesterday I’ve been through all the posts. I am also thinking about doing the Bluetooth mod looks easy and very helpful! GuitarG, i don’t know about your problem, but just think positive and have your hands free and in contact with natural things. I’m sure nature can’t let you down- 344 replies
