Yeh we do the same with ours even try to keep to 1 larger ssd as IT find setting up bitlocker easier as for graphics Looks like ansys have tested the RTX A series, understandably not the A4500/a5500 laptop cards yet but they are just changes of cores/memory so should be fine see https://www.ansys.com/content/dam/it-solutions/platform-support/graphical-display-graphics-cards-tested-2022-r1.pdf I know solidworks have also as I run a 7760 with a4000 with all SOlidWorks apps and they will be testing the 7670/7770 asap. As for the 4k if you tested older versions last time it could be that also I know a lot was fixed In recent SolidWorks versions for sure. Most of the issue now relate to multiple different screens with different resolutions/ scaling. If you move windows between them it doesn’t rescale correctly currently.

It depends, and certainly the blurring of product lines isn’t too helpful. When they got rid of the Quadro brand it caused even more confusion with similar sounding cards e.g GeForce Rtx 3060 vs the pro RTX A3000 I’ve had to deal with the fallout from unsupported hardware purchases so I know first hand it can lead to some awkward conversations if the issue isn’t replicable on a certified system with a pro card you can be in a difficult place! if you are doing it for a living I wouldn’t risk using a card not certified/ supported by a software vendor. Most software will still run on the consumer card but you are more venerable to an update in either software, OS or drivers breaking things the software vendors work hard with NVIDIA pro graphics team to test and hopefully avoid this! plus I tested a medium size dataset In SolidWorks recently on an rtx 3080 the assembly had about 6000 parts and rotation/ zoom was around 5-6fps in shaded with edges mode 1920x1080 on an rtx a4000 desktop it was over 60fps so huge noticeable difference in day to day work. Given the pricing is also much closer these days it is a smaller compromise although I appreciate it hurts getting less Cores etc for the same/ more money if your productivity and livelihood depends on it then pro all the way. If you aren’t using applications In that way the I can see why the GeForce is tempting!

Most core Solidworks stuff will run fairly well on 4k so long as you are running a recent version however I would highly recommend a pro card like the rtx a4500, the consumer cards are not supported/ certified for Solidworks and I would imagine the same for Ansys, for Solidworks view manipulation will be slower on consumer cards, you may miss some graphics features and the support you get In event of any issues will be limited

For Solidworks only pro cards are certified and supported, it will run on consumer cards but generally with complex data sets the speed of rotation, zoom etc will be significantly slower. Also if you run into an issue that is specific to a consumer card then only best efforts will be made to workaround/ fix whereas if you have a pro card the developers will work with NVIDIA to resolve. So yeh for professional apps it’s worth checking support for sure

Another vote for pro support we buy hundreds of these and well basic support cost more than the difference in wasted time so we switched to pro support maybe 8 years ago and always get great service. dell never seem to quibble even had items reaching the end of warranty replaced with the a laptop from the latest generation if they couldn’t get the parts to fix the old one!

Yep I’m pretty sure you are correct. even though Xeon and windows pro for workstations is gone Microsoft are still going to squeeze a bit more out of customers if they want the top CPUS 😞 It is the same on the 12th gen Precision 3660 desktops when you switch to the i9-12900k you have to Pay more, though not as steep as when it was pro for workstations 6 cores plus. im hoping those lead times the configurator is giving out are accurate as leading up to launch I was warned of early to mid September being more likely estimate even when a June launch was due. Anyway glad we are finally seeing progress I’ve still had no confirmation that these are launching for order on time but the configurator appearing is a pretty sure sign!!

Yeh that’s what I meant by being unsure if the values quoted were the minimum (base) values or the maximum Boost, hard to know we can only go on the published documentation until someone gets one and reports back. What model do you have? checking what the documentation says for your model would also be useful as a guide.I don’t have direct experience of Lenovo mobile workstations but was surprised by these listed power ratings for the new models. It would be ideal if all manufacturers listed the range especially as tech savvy people can see it as soon as they get their hands on one. i did however test a 15 inch HP Z book a couple of generations ago with quadro rtx 3000 and it was clocked so low a NVIDIA T2000 out performed it for most tasks, and way lower clocked than the equivalent Dell precision which had about a third faster clocks if memory serves.
-
Also of interest is that Lenovo quote a maximum power of 80W for all of the GPUS making the high end ones pretty irrelevant for me and a rather low sounding 35W for the A1000/A2000 https://thinkstation-specs.com/thinkpad/p16-gen-1/ Same for HP (page 19) https://h20195.www2.hp.com/v2/getpdf.aspx/c08160125.pdf Unsure if either model can boost above that. this Also says 4 x m.2 ssd for the HP which does seem at odds with the spec sheet unless it is 2x4TB and 2x 2TB due to thickness or something like that. I believe CAMM memory is helping Dell already with space for cooling and storage. it would be interesting if @Dell-Mano_G could give comparable figures for the Dell Precison 7670 and 7770 worst case and boost. I think the numbers he gave were combined with CPU. For me most of our workloads are either GPU or CPU intensive rare to pin all cores and the GPU at the same time My experience of Dell vs other brands is they tend to under promise and over deliver. I have a tiny precision 3260 compact workstation on test currently with a 65W i7-12700 dell even list 65W it on the configurator /quote and yet the PL1 and PL2 both show as 100W and happily sits well above its base speed for long periods of high load.

Yeh I heard similar, 7770 might be a little earlier but I was even told 28th for the Precision 7670 is an earliest date so it could slip further.

Certainly seems like we are hearing similar things, I’m glad Dell would rather delay than release when they aren’t confident! Odd to promote the XPS 17 rather than the Precision 5770 though?!

I’m hearing the same as @arron44126 for the UK, June 16th is the plan at least… 🙂 from what I heard the pre production units which are built for testing, certification by various software providers were not built long ago due to China lockdown related issue which Must have contributed to the delay but still we all want them to be right so I can wait a little longer! on the good news front The China factory does seem to be more back to something like normal service for the current gen precision 7760 machines we have ordered in May. Precision systems are being prioritised and the systems not only got built quickly but we didn’t not see the same delays in shipping we had seen of late. It’s looking more like 3-4 weeks from order to arrival rather than the 8+ weeks we were seeing when lockdown in China was at its worst l, some orders we were waiting 4-5 weeks between leaving the factory and arrival, so bad were the logistics challenges! I’m still going to be ordering our batches of the new generation systems soon after release though to avoid delays, new systems tend to take a little longer for extra quality checks and don’t want to risk delays if demand is high and components start going on longer lead times again.

Excellent step up from the GPU power limits on the 7560 🙂 and another bump up as I was hoping for with the 7770! I do have one more question myself I I may, will it be possible to disable Efficiency “E”cores in the BIOS on the precision mobile range? (3000, 5000 and 7000 series) certain applications at the moment are performing better without the E cores for me currently. I did check the manuals for the released systems but it doesn’t go into that depth Just the usual list of multi core settings. on the Precision 3000 series desktops it is listed under Atom cores, setting that to 0 disables the efficiency cores

Yeh a bit of competition is good, certainly looks more purpose built and thought out than in the past and if the power limits are sustained and accurate then should compete performance Wise. I believe dell are still way out in the lead in the workstation market but don't want them to get complacent! I do know a large corp who switched from Dell Precision to Lenovo for shall we say.... non technical reasons and well their actual users who I worked alongside didn't have a good word to say about them. Those that could clung onto their precisions as long as they could even though they were older kit, keyboards were even a major gripe Iirc. That was a few years back, but without wanting to turn this into a political discussion for me also a big factor of the brands who have taken a stand in this current unstable world we find ourselves in. For me those will be the ones who deserve to do well and get my business. Same as companies that are still on my don't buy list for the way they treated customers during covid, mainly in the tourism sector, the bad ones didn't get my summer holiday money this year!

Good catch I must have read that 280W figure on the Dock but given I didn't even notice they have ditched the 17.3 inch form factor clearly I was skimming it! I noticed Another (Sponsored) but interesting article on 16inch form factor from Lenovo. @Dell-Mano_Glove to see this kind of in depth info out their for the Dell range soon, I'm still confident Dell have the best engineering, performance and support (Pro support) and don't need to pay for coverage! but for engineering geeks like me we love to know all the R&D that goes into these Precision systems hoping for some articles/videos soon! https://develop3d.com/sponsored/lenovo-thinkpad-p16-from-elegant-concept-to-robust-reality/

Yeh I've not tested HP in a couple of generations they seem to be pushing Dell more but I can't say I care for their designs look rather chunky and you make a good point on the cooling atleast by what we can tell from the pictures it doesn't look ideal! . When I last tested the 15inch versions the Quadro RTX 3000 was running alot lower clocks than the Precision 7540 I think Hps lack popularity on this forum is reflected in the market from what I head from customers and my dell contacts but then they would say that! That they are rationalising down to a single 16 inch model may indicate they didn't have the volume to sustain competing at the very top end, larger 17.3 inch chassis is always going to allow for more powerful components in my opinion.

This old pdf has details from when DOO fans were first used in the 5750. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.delltechnologies.com/asset/en-us/products/workstations/industry-market/precision-thermals-brief-042320.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwihr6e65ev3AhVIZcAKHeKxA1kQFnoECAYQAQ&usg=AOvVaw0Udd75G9l5LHwLjxo8CuWp Interesting also that HP have gone with vapour chambers in their equivilentd to the 7670 and 7770 (Fury G9 range) it would good to hear more technical details on the upgrades dell have made and how that has affected power limits.

From what I hear dell will be pulling the non Vpro enterprise CPUs from the Precision 7670 and 7770due to there being no or very little pricing difference so we won't have a choice, but won't cost us any more either. Spec sheets havent been updated yet though. I guess this rules out most overclocking based on the slides from Intel vision but even for enthusiasts I'm not sure how much benefit that would be let alone most of the business use these systems target are unlikely to tinker with overclocking. My contacts weren't as pessimistic on order date as before as I understand some of China getting back to something approaching normality but still unlikely we will see any Production units built in May.

I'd certainly like to hear more from @Dell-Mano_G on power limits for both the Cpu (PL1 and PL2) and on the GPUs in all precision models. Especially as HP just launched their equivalent HP Z Book Fury 17 G9 with 280W power supply. See https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.zdnet.com/google-amp/article/hps-new-zbook-fury-is-a-laptop-that-promises-desktop-performance/ Its been a couple of generations since I tested HP out but when I tested their 15 Inch model with rtx 3000 the clock speeds were set so low it performed worse for everything except rendering than a t2000 The equivalent dell 7540 wiped the floor with it. It does seem like they have upped their game cooling wise though and still support 128 gb of memory in 4x so dimm. They do look chunkier however, would have to see them in the flesh to really compare. On Dell's side It's quite impressive when I compare dell generations I have from M6800 (no longer used) to 7720, 7730/40 and now my current 7760 in the office the progress in reducing the footprint is pretty impressive especially given the power of the components has also increased so much. My colleagues 7560 is also such a difference vs my own 7760 that with the new 16 inch 7670 I can see more of our team switching to that form factor Also interesting that HPs thin and light models support higher graphics than 5570 and 5770. I'm hoping for a new chassis with big upgrades next generation.

Yeh in normal times for us in Europe from the China factory 5-10 working days would be typical, that has sometimes been longer in the past 2 years at 3-4 weeks. I've just been advised to expect it to be even worse than that, one precision 7760 quote yesterday had an Eta of 25th July!! Now I have to say Dell tend to err on being pessimistic and actually delivering earlier than expected in my experience, I'd much rather they tell me the worst case so I'm happy with this. The same cannot be said for my experience of some other providers who in my experience tend to over promise to get your money then push the delivery time way out!

I'm not hearing such postive news from our contacts, nothing is confirmed but for now sounding more likely to be June for actual ability to order 😞 Also current lead times for our recent precision laptop orders coming out of China factory have been 8 weeks + with delays due to part shortages and in transit, I've had one order for multiple units AWOL for over a month since leaving the factory, sadly not unheard of for us in the last 18 months, but 2-3 weeks in transit has been more typical. I'm hoping things will improve as lockdowns in China ease Still will be good to hear more from @Dell-Mano_G on the CPUs in the 7670 and 7770. I'm not sure if it is as simple as the PL1 and PL2 limits for the Cpu but it will be interesting to find out more on how the cooling solution has allowed for these more powerful CPUs and GPUs this generation. Obviously will have to be some balancing when the something like an a4500 GPU and 12th gen CPU are both heavily loaded as the limit will be the 180W (7670 slim) or 240w for 7770 and 7670 performance (Iirc)

Hi which version of the spec sheet is that? All the ones I've seen here for the 7770 shows non ecc CAMM upto 128gb. Non ECC only up to 64gb for so dimms e.g. 64GB, 2 x 32GB, DDR5, 4800MHz, non-ECC, SODIMM (coming soon) I'm hearing not that soon also 😞 Main issue for me other than that with CAMM is for companies upgrades are a potential issue now. We would usually leave slots free if possible for upgrades but now you would have to take 1 CAMM module out to upgrade to another. Maybe Dell can do a trade in program, as for companies selling spares parts on ebay etc just isn't worth the effort most of the time, for individuals less of a problem. However innovation both on the cooling and RAM is definately nice to see I'm hoping we will see even thinner versions of both chassis next time, usually after a few generations we get a complete upgrade 🙂 Thanks for continuing to post the info you uncover. I get updates direct but what I find on here often goes into alot of depth that don't feature in dell's presentations!

Hi @Dell-Mano_G Can I also jump in with a couple of questions on memory support? 1.Will ECC Ram be supported for the 7000 series laptops (with so dimm interposed) 2. Are ECC CAMM modules under development/consideration for the future. For CAE simulation workloads we have previously specified xeon CPUs with ECC RAM. For 12th generation precision 3660 desktops ECC ram is coming post launch with i5-i9 CPUs but I'm not sure about laptops
