  1. So I got that tower M.2 heatsink installed in my PC on an Acer GM7000 2TB PCIE4 drive (that I have my OS on). Acer doesnt make it in-house, its one of those OEM supplied but branded Acer products, BINIX iirc?

Im not running anything particularly intensive (at all) but I just had to have it on.

Thus far havent seen temps above 32c

Now I want to get the Sonnet 4x10Gbps USB C pcie adapter or perhaps the GV-Titan TB3 card from Gigabyte. That might actually be better since it would be actively powered by the PSU. Wont be until next month or so.

  2. 4x32GB DDR4 3200Mhz ECC

    20+16GB 1333/1866 ECC

    200+GB DDR4 sodimm unbuffered

Anything interesting I can use these for? Looked to see if I could build a RAMdisk but that seems to have gone extinct with DDR2

Honestly if I were better at electrical engineering / PCB related stuff what I would love to build would be the following.

A USB4 enclosure that can house an NVME drive that would clone to a 128GB RAMdisk that then reports (and behaves) as a (bootable) Mass Storage Device to a PC. My work does a lot of Windows deployment type stuff so it would interesting (to me, at least) to see how long a deployment would take when the PC and its own storage are the only limiting factors.

The NVME holds the data that we want to deploy (non-volatile) and clones to the RAMdisk (volatile), Naturally would need its own power source as well.

I dunno, I just have an abundance of random stuff and am trying to think of an interesting use case for it.

    You guys got any ideas?

Luck of the draw perhaps....seems if it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any at all :classic_wink:

Just on a side note about HDD's...Toshiba has hit big trouble and their HDD's were always good to me.

I use a number of seagate drives and so far the only drive to fail me is a Samsung 850 SATA M.2. That being said I did have pretty much all of my "FreeAgent Xtreme" drives fail on me but that was 15-17 years ago.

I run a Lenovo M720q with a riser card and a 10-gb Intel X550-T2 network card for my Opnsense router.  What is your real goal with this project? Most systems aren't going to be able to use 40gb networking. You're never going to find 2x PCIe slots (but you can convert a M.2 slot into one). About the best you're going to be able to do is a mini-itx build, even then you'd be hard pressed to meet your specs.  Trust me, I'd love to have my cake and eat it too; but there are compromises with form factor.

Oh that must be a sweet little box there!

@Snowleopard Perhaps in the future you might come across the micro form factor with dedicated pcie come down in price (Dell sells them now as "precisions") but they dont have HX processors. That Minis Forum PC looks pretty sweet though

I do. Code 43 usually in my experience means a physical problem. Is the dye in tact? I tapped into a 19/20V blank pad on the motherboard and did the resistor mod. It performed admirably. It, like the 2080 is running external power and resistance mod.

This intrigues me greatly, I have been on the fence about getting an RTX 3080 for my Clevo since it doesnt have external power

It is strange that GeoHotz is complaining about AMD's MES firmware being closed, when Nvidia's firmware is far more locked down than AMD's.

Essentially, GeoHotz is complaining that they [his company] can't use the 7900 XTX to compete with Nvidia OR AMD's AI product derivatives because AMD's firmware isn't open source. With his coding knowledge, I am surprised he hasn't cracked the firmware himself or written his own. I am also surprised that Lisa Su responded to his heckling on Twitter.

Its an unfortunate bi-product of the current times. Spend more time dealing with those with the loudest wailing instead of addressing probable constructive criticisms.

The 780W Eurocom power supply is rather big and noisy, I do not think it is a good alternative.

The SlimQ version is nice for traveling as it weighs in at not much more than 2lbs when before the total power supply assembly with its rack and cables was more like 6 lbs. That is a lot of weight and volume that one can save when on the road and it is quiet, too and also charges other devices via two USB-C ports, of course only when the laptop is not already pulling 330W!

    image.png.b3174934618dfff6375926861fc85606.png

Just one caveat: It it small and light and therefore can get quite hot, especially when nearing its power limit.

I like products that have modularity in mind. While you do have to mod it a bit, thats a fairly small compromise for what you get in return. Thanks for sharing!

You don't even need to do that much. At the MS account creation/login screen, type the email address no at thankyou dot com, any password, and it will let you use a local account from there.

I was perusing MicroCenter this morning and saw they put the 5800X3D on sale for $270, which would have been enough to tempt me to go that route over the 5600X3D at $200. I don't feel like taking my machine apart again and making the lengthy drive to do the exchange. Still irritating, though.

Yes I have recently come across that method as well. For my personal use case it would be my route to go as well but for work I stick with the above as I unfortunately cant trust people to remember what the PW they set on customer systems which creates more work for me.

270 was right about the price I chose to take the dive for my own 5800X3D, still serving me well as my DD though I would imagine that a 5600X3D would be pretty similar in most games, production couldnt say though, I dont dabble in that on my own time.

I use the ISO creation tool which is nice not sure which one it is. I can disable the TPM 2.0, and create a local account for the install. And when I load windows the first time it already has a local account made with no password, you better set a password before restarting windows during the first time loading after the “Getting things ready for you” or else you can’t login after a reboot because it’s a local account created with no password assigned, and you’ll have to reinstall windows all over again lol. TPM security is smart but stupid at the same time I think. Smart because back in the day you could just plug in someone’s HDD and use it on your PC. But it also sucks because flipping over to my motherboards bios position can trip the TPM and break my OS.

During the OOBE setup you should be able to to open CMD (Shift+F10 / Shift+Fn+F10) and run OOBE /BYPASSNRO. This will allow local user account creation, or at least it still works for me as some state it doesnt work.

I'd never used automotive coolant, but heard it was ok to use. I did order some Bykski concentrate from China, but was thinking of trying some automotive type.

BTW, where has @johnksss been? Have not seen him nor @Reciever much lately??

I have been loosely following the thread but have been busy with work and professional development. Built up a couple of esxi hosts, researching a good product to use for a homelab switch. Using a 2960x for now but plan to buy the brocade icx6610-24 (or 48, based on price) started getting a few different vm templates setup so I can spin up a server quickly and expect to start training in server 2019/2022 and hybrid azure. Have a few 10Gbps cards now as well.

Also planning to try my hand at moonlight / sunshine on the 10850k platform. Going to need more ram for it as it's still using the 16GB and sadly ecc doesn't work with the platform. Some of the guys in IT have been training recently so I'm hoping to get in that momentum as well.

Im still reading much of what is posted as well as moderating. Which reminds me some posts recently were removed due to having no relation (even loosely) to this thread. The repeat offenders know who they are.

what do you mean? has manipulation ever led to more than discomfort, like do you mean like charles manson? or like a evil hypnotist doing nefarious things. I was thinking more along the lines of AI using NLP to manipulate people

There have been wars started over catalysts that later turned out to be false. With that precedent which was carried out in the stone age by relative comparison today then it should be fairly concerning what is to come.

  13. So recently have been looking around for a strong product in the 8-9" arena (Android tablet) and wow has the market vanished in the middle.

The Alldocube tablet looked promising mostly because of its price/performance offering is pretty strong but 1 speaker kind of kills it for me personally, I mostly use my tablet for streaming media.

I have been using the MediaPad M3 for maybe 4-5 years now and its been great for what I use it for but the battery is starting to show its age.

It looks like the Y700 2023 is the new price/performance king in the 8" tablet form factor. Has anyone here had any experience with one or perhaps any thoughts on this model?

getting a refund? Im missing something as usual. Not alot of talk out of 100 billion internet webpages about the dangers of AI, no one has said a specific thing they are worried about. A gun for example, one could say the bullet can kill someone. Ai will? with?

what are your concerns specifically with AI, like a bullet from a gun. will Ai become so smart it will say a few things that will cause people to go crazy?

not trolling, honest question wondering what others think about AI and the specifics

I found this a while back it goes more into what. This is more in line as to what I was thinking, but he doesn't explain in depth

As mentioned earlier on this page, the manipulation of information as well as its dissemination is a simple but chief concern in relation to AI.

Ah no, that news with D4 was fake. There are a lot of players still playing d4, myself included 😄(around 150k-200K daily)

Well thats good news, I hope they keep adding more to the game. I purchased D4 on one of those rare sales but havent played it for more than a few hours. Figured I'd hold off for a bit.

“Will a gamer/OCer, previously running a 1KW 24GB graphics card settle for a slim/blower 16GB model designed for professionals, with the castrated 4080S still being about 25% slower than the 4090? Note: saving for a house!” 🙂

The fact that a purchase between a house and a 4090 is even a thing is something im still wrestling with lol
