Hi, has anyone see the other thread about the new mxm graphics cards in mxm a and mxm b formats? will any of them work with the x170sm-g?
-
Will these work with the Clevo x170-sm-g?

I have 8gig Google Fiber, AT&T Fiber and Specturm is laying fiber in the neighborhood. I am choosing to go with 8gig fiber from one of them and they are talking about 20 gig fiber to residential homes in 12-18 months for 8k video streaming.
That is what is available now and potentially in less than 2 years from now.
The next question is the network in the home. Cat 5/5e 6/6a are not going to handle that type of bandwidth that well. I already have a Cat 8 patch cable going from the fiber box to the the router that services the rest of the home.
Right now I am running a Wifi 6E router and will be upgrading to a WiFi 7 router with SFP ports as soon as I see one that is decent.
The issue is that the router sits on 1 side of the home so the wifi signals that reach the opposite corner of the house, while good, aren't as good as being closer to the router.I have looked at some of the Wifi 7 mesh systesms and even if I go that route, the mesh access point needs to be hard wired with eithernet or fiber back to the router for the best possible connection with the least amount of latency.
I have a cat5e cable that runs under the house from one side to the other and I want to replace that with a 100gig duplex fiber cable as my backbone.Temporarily I was going to use media converted like this (10g) untill 100g ones come available. Or use an 8 port SPF switch if I can find one that will do 100G for a back bone.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08LQ7H3NB/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=AE2OZG2NN3099&psc=1
If I am ultimately going this route, I have no idea what fiber cable I need to buy to run under the house. I will need about 150 feet ( ground run ) going through the walls to wall jacks.
I only want to crawl under the house once and be done so I might actually run 3 or 4 sets of duplex 100g fiber cables at 1 time for future expansion. -
This is what I am working with.
I have 8gig fiber coming into the house from the street
I have a Wi-Fi 7 router with fiber in from the wall in the room
I am going Cat 8 out of the router on a 2.5gig port into an ethernet into an 8 port + 2 uplink (All SFP Ports) switch.
This is where I don't know what I need.I have 2 of these 8 Port SFP switches, one next to the router and one on the other side of the house. instead of running 4 cat 8 cables through the walls to the other side of the house, I want to run 4 duplex 100gig or 200 gig fiber cables between the switches sort of as the backbone of the home network.
Plugged into the empty SPF ports of the switches will be fiber connections going into Wi-Fi7 access points around the home and some outside also.
What type of fiber cables am I looking for? The longest distance is going to be about 175FT from any of the 2 switches. Spectrum and Google are going to be offering 20gigi fiber to homes in my area shortly and I only want to run fiber through the walls once and I think we are at the point were fiber is just cheaper and simpler than 8a or what ever will replace cat 8. SPF switches also use less power and are getting dirt cheap now.
I am willing to spend money on 400gig 175 ft cables if its not that much more to future proof it a little longer. -

These are Crucial sticks specifically
Crucial 32GB (1x32GB) CT32G4SFD832A 3200MHz For some reason it seems to struggle to read the SPD from them, When I had just two of them in there it would go straight to 3200mhz and not care, I think it's just the extra load on the IMC
I have the standard Prema bios for these, I do not have the Dsanke bios or know where to get it from a reliable source, i've heard there is a bios that allows you to use 128GB and keep the Thunderbolt system enabled, I will be using a Thunderbolt enclosure in the future so that would be nice.
Any comment on the IETS GT600?
I like it so far with the X170-SM-G, I am running it at 1000rpms and its not louder than the laptop idling, going faster the sound of the fans gradually get louder. I also ordered it from Amazon. -
Never mind. I was able to find the unlocked bios and upgrade the nic from Wi-Fi 4 (n) to Wi-Fi 6e (Ax) with 6Ghz / 5.9Gpbs and unlock the ram for DDR3/L 1800. With Linux or 23H2 its an nice little machine.

I picked up one of these laptops and apparently Lenovo will only let you use their approved wi-fi cards and people have made a custom bios, but all the links I have seen for this unlocked bios are dead ends. This is a 12th gen Intel system with a Centrino Wi-Fi "N" card. I found a AX card with 6ghz and I get the dreaded un authrorized network card message at boot and have to remove it and put the old one back in to boot.
I need a solution to make the AX card work cause I am not going to deal with wireless n speeds..... -

Took me a moment but it looks to be the Dell Precision Compact workstation.
Not sure how long they've been making this SKU so prices are likely still to be high, but like most enterprise hardware the value tends to drop off like a rock after their service period.
oh wow, That is almost perfect. If it had an i9 hx processor instead of a T series and then 2 more so dim slots and 2 more m.2 slots on the bottom of the motherboard, that would be a sick tiny setup.
Unfortunately only 2 so-dimms and T series processor..... oh well. -

Oh that must be a sweet little box there!
@Snowleopard Perhaps in the future you might come across the micro form factor with dedicated pcie come down in price (Dell sells them now as "precisions") but they dont have HX processors. That Minis Forum PC looks pretty sweet though
Link? I saw some of the newer Dell and HP tiny pc's had 1 pcie expansion slot. I would like to build one out with 2 or 4 10 gig ports for an open source router. I think 8th gen tiny pc's or newer can also do that, but I am not spending $800-$1200 on a tiny pc. $150-$300 is a lot more reasonable.

Glad you got the one where the fan speed can be adjusted!
How loud would you say it is approximately when you compare it to the fan noise of the Clevo - like the Clevo at 30% or louder?
I just got a meter and can take some readings give me a little time.

I read that in desktop overclocking usually increasing VCCIO and VCCSA can improve memory stability. Unfortunately those voltage rails are neither readable. From the schematics it seems like VCCIO is 1.05v and VCCSA is 1.1v and both have overcurrent protection set just slightly higher so no tolerance for overclocking.
I am running 128gb of Crucial Ballistix, completely stable, but I can't get set it to the highest xmp level in the bios.

The y-cable is my ticket so to say to take the X170 on the road without the hassle of carrying around a trunk full of cabling and power supplies. That always annoyed me and then there was the chore of extracting the whole assembly from its place in the office which also was rather painful. So it works for my use case and power cables are not something magical and with proper isolation there is not really an issue with having a Y-cable. Maybe at some point SlimQ will even produce one themselves which would be much nicer than having to resort to DIY versions.
Maybe, my 780 watt eurocom power supply is really quit and its half the size of carrying around 2 bricks, I would absolutely hate 2 bricks.

Sorry I made that other post, but he had a make an offer so I punched in $30 and it went through, I have to thank you for making this post cause some of the sellers have them at $100 and I think thats nuts but there are others relatively cheaper
lol I still need one or 2 possibly. Will the newer slim one work for a 2012 model?

Where to get a replacement M17xR4 330w charger (2012) ? I looked around and the reviews for the 3rd party ones seem to be really horrible on Amazon.

I recently got one, It is certainly big but in a quiet room with only the laptop and the power supply running, You can't really hear the PSU on my experience unless you put your ear up too it and listen directly, Even at the 450-500W load i've put on it I still havn't really heard it.
Personally I just find it a little on the dangerous side to be toying with things that have such High Amperage and prefer an OEM/Integrated solution myself, But if the mods work more power too you, Send it!
Nice, I have asked about this in the P870 Thread but I havn't had a response yet as to wether or not the latches will be tall enough to house or older units since the P870 is quite a 'tall' laptop so to speak, But I've been looking at getting one, Though $250 AUD is pretty spendy.
That cooling pad at 1000 rpms makes more noise than the Eurocom Power supply: -

I was wondering if there is any motherboard where I can have 1 m.2 slot for the nvme and boot linux and then an additional 4 or 8 m.2 slots for separate laptop BE200 network interface cards to drive 8 or 16 antennas as a high capacity access point? and open source software like pfsense to manage it?
If there is, it would be more cost effective than the insane prices manufacturers want for wi-fi 7 routers or access points right now. -
I have upgraded the m.2 wi-fi nic's to BE200 cards (Wi-Fi 7) in 4 devices now and they all work with Windows 11 using : Intel(R) Wi-Fi 7 BE200 320MHz. I haven't upgraded my router yet. I am not sure about Linux support for the BE200 (Wi-Fi -7) cards yet.

they are ryzen based windows 11 machines usually the best bang for buck unless you go refurbished. ill look into a t900. can't buy anythng right now as i went on a spending spree. I would like something with a decent igpu for older titles like crysis so I tend to lean towards ryzen or tenth gen intel and up.
found this...it seems similar to what your talking about
Right, Dell, HP and Lenovo make tiny / micro PC's. I really like the Lenovo's however my preference is Dell, but it looks like HP offers the most daughter cards for theirs including a 10gig eithernet port. This makes me sad in a way because I don't like HP computers 🙂

I also have no need for a desktop, a desktop use cases =0 except for wanting to dabble in 8k gaming with the 4090. utterly pointless.
I heard good things about the beelink gt series. I was thinking of buying a mini pc for geforce now something with 16gb ram a ryzen cpu and 1tb storage. and the kicker is, not only are they super portable they are cheap, I think the ones I was looking at were from 350-600 cad. Like if I can spend 500 cad and get 4k maxed 60fps gaming and be able to do all the things I want/need and rival a desktop in real world performance like how snappy it feels. count me in
what would you get around the 400 cad mark?
I am not sure, I have been ordering Refurbished Lenvo T900's with 16gb ram and the i7 6700T in them for about $170 US, I found some T920's with the i7 8700T for around $300 US. Then I replace the drive that came with them with either a 1 or 2TB nvme and 64gb of ram.
I never heard of the Beelink GT, it looks like it is good for what it does, but its not going to have the power and customizability that I want from a straight up pc and Windows is easier for me to work with than Android.
Anything newer than an i7 8700T the prices sky rocket to $800-$1000 and I am not looking to pay brand new prices, and to get DDR5, I would need a 13th gen Intel processor. -
The last full tower I built had a Q6600 processor in it 🙂 Since then it has all been about portability, meaning, Maxed Alienware Laptops, the Current laptop is a Clevo x170sm-g. I have no reason for a full tower anymore.
I also have a couple Dell PowerEdge 2U rack servers for other stuff.
Now I am exploring the world of Micro/Mini/ Tiny PC's just because they are so light, easily hidden, can be used a plex, pi-hole, etc other types of servers.
I have been using Lenoo M900's with nvme drives and maxed ram at 64gb. But I am looking for more in this form factor.
I saw the Minis Forum MS-01 and I really wish there was something in a similar, maybe slightly larger form factor with an Intel® Core™ i9-13900HX Processor, 4 SO-DIMM slots for 128 or 256gb DDR 5 and 4 M.2 NMVe slots with 2 x 2.5gb ports and 2 SFP ports for up to 40gb networking and 2 low profile PCE slots.
The Intel T series processors are ok, but I really want an HX series i9 -

The problem is getting laptop makers to re-invest in large, thick bulky laptops and that's just not where the money is for them profits wise.
The NH55 was their attempt to address the true DTR crowd while appeasing the thinner and lighter audience and based on no other follow up models (including just releasing a slight revision with 13th and 14th gen support) it was the last nail in the coffin.
I fully tamed the NH55 so it is power limited not heat limited now with this 12900k and I won't be upgrading for some time unless a worthy model comes along. Like I mentioned elsewhere, I bought and returned the Asus G18 13900k HX 4080 twice to Best Buy as there's just nothing you can really do with it.....oh and Armory Crate garbage.
There's just no way to cram enough heatsink and thicker fans in these thinner and lighter chassis to support real hardware and mobile computing is close enough now the makers see no reason to go in that direction ever again.
Have you seen the videos about the solid state coolers without fans? apparently they are scalable for things as small as smart phones to rack servers.
