    Perhaps @Mr. Fox has some thoughts on that. I have done zero gaming on Linux lately, but ran some GPU-intensive benchmarks like Heaven, Valley, Superposition etc with no issues.

    Nothing creatures of lesser intelligence would fear before it's too late. Cattle are not afraid until the last moments, because we are much more clever than them and thus are able to ensure they won't be able to sense the risk. It's "just" intelligence. It's everything. We are kind of lucky in that the risks are actually being laid bare by the experts left and right, yet the unpleasant situation is still difficult for people to comprehend and accept.

    I think the companies just tried to follow Apple in defining what "portable" means. Clearly, lighter is better everything else being equal, but of course things are not equal once you cut the laptop dimensions and size from 3kg to 2kg. 3kg is still very portable, but of course a bit less convenient. The modern world is all about convenience: no need to do work, robots will do it for us; no need to think, AI will do that for us etc. Where does that take us? That's pretty clear: no need to exist, AI will do that for us too, and do it better.

    What same logic? The Hinton interview is like Einstein or Newton telling you there is a serious problem, yet you know better despite not being an expert in the field at all. Perhaps we deserve what's coming....

    Intel CPUs tend to be massively overvolted out of the box. I'm not sure why that is. Poor manufacturing tolerances to increase yield, which they compensate for with voltage? Tight reliability requirements??The race with AMD is partially a blessing and partially to blame, as Intel has no choice but to crank up clocks and voltages in order to stay competitive in benchmarks. Whatever the case may be, in practice Intel's high end CPUs get massively more efficient after undervolting, and even more so if people are willing to sacrifice a ratio point or two and a few % of performance. Sadly, no OEM or mobo manufacturer offers this kind of optimisation out of the box. The video covers 13900K, but surely relevant to laptops as well:

    Just to add to the previous post. I think Intel's high end CPUs just destroyed the thin and light dream - both the laptop and desktop variants put out too much heat for any reasonable cooling solution to handle. I've read somewhere that the heat flux generated by the 13900K is similar to that of a Bunsen burner lol Now, that wouldn't necessarily be a huge issue if manufacturers just provided suitably sized laptops, with beefy cooling solutions. Alas, Dell and some others have painted themselves into a corner by trying to follow Apple's thin and light design. Apple cleverly side-stepped much of this by switching to power-efficient ARM/RISC CPUs, whereas Dell continues putting Intel gas burners into thin throttlebooks on the high end. Don't get me wrong, I like Intel high-end CPUs - perform marvelously once tamed, but they can be incredibly frustrating if not configured and cooled properly, and most laptops fail to cool a 60-90W CPU (as per here).

    I hear you. I had very specific reasons to undergo the effort (and it's a different story on the desktop side)!, the effort was actually mostly around tuning software settings (of which there is a gazillion in the BIOS), but would definitely prefer not to have to do that in general. Sadly it looks like manufacturers just struggle to get things running well out the box. Arguably the behaviour you desire (slower but steady wins the race), should be something you just experience in balanced performance mode.

    I mean, we can say something... For instance: disappointing, not great. In the screenshot you posted before the GPU was at 54W and CPU was still hitting 100C. But as actually my Alienware m15 R1 (2019) is not that much better, if at all. In pure CPU benches it can only do 56W before the CPU throttles (on a good standard paste). Nothing you can buy will just work (unless you accept significant compromises), but looks like the the current top gaming laptops would work much better, since manufacturers actually focus on performance there. Either way, you need to be able to tune effectively to get the most of any high end system, bar perhaps $50k HEDT machines. Took me months to work it out on the desktop side.

    Power limiting and/or temp limiting are the (much) simpler approaches, and indeed might be worth trying fiirst. Controlling clocks is helpful if not necessary for effective voltage adjustment under power or temp constraints. Basically, limiting the clocks allows you to undervolt more.

    I guess. We all know the story. Two interesting questions arise in the context of our current endeavours in the field of AI that the movie probably won't answer: 1. Will life on Earth ultimately get destroyed by this brilliant but arguably unnecessary invention? 2. Would the Russians and others be able to independently build nuclear weapons without bugging the Manhattan Project?

    Yep, the early robots and ideas of robots were fascinating, few people were thinking of the implications if this stuff advances a lot, in part because almost nobody believed it would in such a short period of time. If you asked people in the field a few years ago how much time is need for AI to reach the state it is in now, most people would say 'probably decades', or 'we are not even close'. RIP professional musicians - another species endangered and soon to be terminated by AI: Here is one of the AI-generated pieces which started the discussion. Not my genre, but people say it's the best song the original artist Drake never made: Edit: The AI part is this is def "just" voice replacement, not clear how the rest of the creative process worked (lyrics in particular, although the music itself is obviously quite simple), however, here is the underlying version by some unknown musician to demonstrate the massive difference just this voice generation makes: It's day and night.

    Agree laptops shouldn't be viewed as gaming tools only, but that's all the more reason to scrutinize them, and not accept unnecessary limitations. That said, a lot of the laptops look like they are geared towards sedentary gamer kids or something, therefore you get features such as RGB lighting and thin and light. As if the laptop can't be too heavy, or the gamer won't be able to lift it up and put it on the desk or his laps.

    Wow, that is indeed exceedingly silly. Apart from the spoiled haves, I'm thinking this could have been designed with internet cafes / PC arcades in mind - I guess they are or at least used to be popular in Asia. Ironically, the concept of a pod is fairly dystopian. Once people are in battlestation pods, the next step is to ask whether a life outside a pod is worth living, and put them with all the belongings into one of those larger container ("coffin") pods: (* basic model without ARGB lighting)

    Better them? That will be it. Once superior military robotics exists, a government can just mass produce this to control the population, conquer any non-nuclear countries etc. Once things get out of hand, the shiny army will be ready to enforce the new world order. Not a future any sane and decent person would want.

    I couldn't actually find any credible info on that, but absolutely, they are All-In on AI, which is most likely why they are not even trying to be nice to lower tiers of gamers. They understand that AI will soon dramatically exacerbate income inequality, hence the lower market segments are dead folks walking. Either you are one of the haves, in which case you are welcome to a nice 4090, otherwise it's a waste of time and ideally you would just go grab some used hardware off eBay or play on an iGPU (or frankly die rather than cause some unpleasant social unrest down the line), and stop wasting the Masters' of The Universe time. To be fair, the PC market is tanking, so it must be a depressing area to operate in, as opposed to building gods.

    Yes, but how do you propose to address this particular problem within the unfettered capitalist framework? Please don't give me the rational agents lol, we know what that looks like in practice. Seems to me like the only realistic solution to this involves heavy handed intervention by the FTC, and similar fair market and consumer protection agencies around the world.

    Not familiar with the TLP package, but if power management is the goal, then I guess (but I'm not sure) interface priorities alone probably won't do the trick. That said, perhaps there is some advanced config trick to automatically turn lower priority interfaces off if higher priority ones are available, even without using another package. Edit: yes, perhaps. It seems like bonding set up in active-backup mode should do this. If the active/higher priority interface is available, the backup one is apparently turned off. I cannot test this now, but will at the next opportunity.
