OK, so looks like you would need a w7-3445 to beat a 13900K.

Clearly, Rocket Lake represents extremely good value, the main limitation being RAM capacity available to a single CPU.

For a price of a single w7-3495X you could have a farm of 13900Ks that would decimate it in terms of memory bandwidth and pure compute power, except in use cases that do rely on huge amounts of RAM available to a huge CPU. Very niche stuff, although looking at it from the energy efficiency or space perspective does improve the picture. Different story on the server side of course, where you can't use consumer-grade chips (that I heard of).

W7-2495x should be able to beat 13900K.

It has 24 all big cores/48 threads unlike 13900K 8+16 design. And it should be able to OC.

Of course we won't know until it's publicly available.

Ah yes, managed to overlook that one. At about 3x the price, hardly a  super-attractive offering there by Intel.

The same was said about the X99 and X299 platforms. They were never value platforms nor are any of the current workstation platforms from Intel. Those that pick up the W2400/W3400 aren't going to be using them for gaming. Either overclocking or business (or both).

I was going to get a 13900K, then 13900KS. But I kept going back to those rumors about Intel's return to HEDT and it's here. Like with the 3175X before, it will all come down to the boards. I realize I am going to be spending a lot, but they better come with the kitchen sink thrown in.

EDIT: The cooling requirements for overclocking alone are going to be $500+. The EKWB CPU block for C261 was like 400 to 500, if I remember correctly.

Sapphire Rapids is not HEDT in the X299 sense though. These are just Xeons, so a purely business line. Pretty sure people will be disappointed with the overclocking side of things there. I mean 4.8GHz max baseline and enterprise-level ECC memory.

X58, X99, X299 are workstation derivatives. The only thing that separated X99 "HEDT" from X99 "Workstation" was marketing and code. Hence why you can use both "Xeon" and "Extreme" processors on the same mobo. Intel's marketing magic made people believe they were totally different.

When the C261 platform was opened up with the 3175X as it sole unlocked processor, it was still an enterprise orientated platform. That didn't stop Intel trying to coin that platform as "SHEDT". Forum members even spoke about this in the NBR Official Benchmark thread about HEDT vs "Super HEDT", then the death of HEDT and how the 3175X style of processors were the future of HEDT.

I don't think an avid overclocker buying into W790 is going to be disappointed if they know exotic cooling is going to be the requirement in extracting the most performance. Plus, you can overclock ECC memory and some of these boards are already stating 6800+ as possible (likely with two sticks though).

Have some freetime. Making ready for the HOF. I need to move the bottom pump a bit over on right side and put it below the pump on top to fit in the bigger graphics card. The MSI 4090 Suprim Liquid X was so short in lengh that I didn't need move the pump. Now I have to.

Damn nice with a big chassis. Just do some minor changes and all is well @Mr. Fox 🙂

And todays funny news....

AMD got yelled up by their angry customers because they forgot offer drivers for the older cards the last 3 months. Now they are in the spotlight again for their new screw up's.  New drivers out. Not easy to follow up and be sure "that they can fulfill" the claims that they offer better driver value than Nvidia, LOOL

The new AMD Adrenalin 23.2.1 driver reportedly alters the BIOS settings and changes the boot options to make the system crash. As a cautionary measure, users should not be so quick to reinstall the operating system on their computer but to check the boot settings and change the option back to the previous settings. We would also advise users to use DDU or Display Driver Uninstaller and do a clean install of the new graphics drivers.

Latest AMD Radeon Graphics Drivers Reportedly Causing PC Boot Issues & Corrupting Windows

AMD Adrenalin 23.2.1 drivers were released yesterday, offering updates for both the Radeon RX 7000 & Radeon RX 6000 GPU families. Now, the most current update appears to be crashing PCs, sending users error messages that exclaim that the system has an "inaccessible boot drive" error, reports several users from the ComputerBase forums.

I'm really excited to see what these new HEDT chips can do. It feels like it's been an eternity since we got the 3175X lol. This thread is going to be returning to its origins from NBR; a bunch of guys with the highest end HEDT components trying to score as high as possible on all of the benchmarks. I love to see it!

4090 still keep it's value... Well above MSRP. Only Nvidia can change this. They could flood the market with 4090FE and kill off their AIC partner. But don't want that for now. They need them to sell their overpriced lower-Mid end SKUs as 4080 and below.

RTX 4090 still averaged more than $2,000, but some of that is skewed by sales of "rare" models that command higher prices. The RTX 4080 dropped 9% and averaged just slightly higher prices than the official MSRP. RTX 4070 Ti meanwhile averaged $910, 14% above the base MSRP, but many of the custom cards retail for $900 and more

And who in their right mind would buy a 3080@10GB graphics card now and with the old fake FPS boost feature that will be forgotten by Nvidia? They hate support EOL cards. I can only see the 3090(Ti) make sense. And only if you get it to the correct price. Well below the 4070Ti  price point.

This is now. Only from 16 GB you are really carefree...

image.png.1723adbd985fa7132079c029fe980607.png

Why pay $6,800 for content creations if you can buy the 4090 at $1,600 or even a custom AIC card at $2000? Yep, as posted above the 4090 will keep up it's value if not much change and nvidia can get rid of their  cards without doing much with the price point. The lower end stack of the 4000 series is another matter as you see in the chart from Tomshardware.

Higher performance for 76% less

If it wasn't HEDT it would be locked. Intel is purposely unlocking some SKUs for people like @Rage Set and me who buy their HEDT lineup.

Remember, X58 supported both Xeon and regular i7 on the same socket/mb. The 980X & W3680 were literally the same CPU with different name.

Same with X79, X99, X299. They are all Xeons, just branded to i series. They finally decided to call them all Xeons this time around.

They will probably OC well just like W-3175X but require insane cooling and power. That's where the fun is.

The W-2xxx series is the spiritual successor to i9 10980XE X299 platform.

The W-3xxx series is basically like the W-3175X C621/C622.

The good news is, this time it's all in one socket/chipset

Yep, a lot of the "pro" offerings are a just a tax on large businesses, the technically-naive people who believe they will get better performance out of those products, and of course the serious hardware addicts :) I would include the lower tiers of Sapphire Rapids in this assessment, locked or unlocked. Of course, these products have genuine use cases, but then the question would be whether not to just use the cloud instead.

It is easy to forget, and some people have never experienced, what a difference thread, core and channel count can make. HEDT overclockers understand based on experience that "clock is king" only applies in an apples-to-apples comparison. A 32C/64T CPU with octa-channel memory can do a whole heck of a lot more more during the same span of time than a CPU with half as many cores and threads and half as many memory channels. You'd be hard-pressed to be able to push the consumer CPU hard enough to close the gap. The exception can be when the consumer CPU is newer tech with a significantly higher IPC performance. You can fairly easily do this when the HEDT CPU is an antique. But, that (again) would not be an apple-to-apple comparison.

The one stand-out about the antique HEDT CPU is how long it can remain king of the hill. It can usually outperform a consumer platform anywhere from 3 to 5 years, depending on how fast things are advancing on the consumer side.

Former dual Xeon WS user here, just to keep things on the clear side lol

Remember that the RAM will be somewhat slower, and I would really like to see hardcore overclockers "having fun" with 128GB DDR5 RAM+ configs.

Also, as everyone knows, the overall performance improvement due to faster RAM is certainly very far from linear, and close to nil in many use cases, and even more so in the Xeons with larger caches. Hello CB23.

Just saying that Intel pushed the consumer desktop platform so far with the 13900K, they sort of cannibalised the lower tier of their Xeon line for most WS use cases. Same story with Nvidia on the GPU side.

Sure, a 32 core Xeon will ultimately run faster at 3x the TCO, which business are looking closely at too these days. If you can get away with using the consumer platform, you just get much more work done per $, which tends to be a good thing.

Yes, back then it made more sense. It wasn't anywhere near that long ago, but these things are much harder to come by currently due to the amount of compute you can just get from the consumer baseline. Many places also virtualise workstations now.

a mainframe with terminal access is not a new architecture or concept it has been the basis of the industry since the beginning, what was revolutionary is the concept of personal computing as most by now lost the meaning and use a general acronym PC without fully understanding that PC's have long been gone shortly after windows XP.

what we have now are Public Computers which also qualifies under the same acronym PC 😄 but technically its a managed computer by microsoft, you buy the hardware and they manage every aspect of the operating system, to see the industry going back to a mainframe architecture is somewhat funny, maybe in few years from now we will finally get back to a real PC as in Personal Computer the way it used to and should be.

LOL. I prefer to think of a PC as a hardware platform. One can certainly go a long way towards avoiding becoming a Public Computer user by using Linux or hacking Windows, as people here tend to do.

what choice is left, even after tuning the crap out of latest windows everything is now "app" based which you have to get from the... you guessed it the app store which is conveniently installed and runs on your PC, remove it and a slew of issue rises up, and its not a coincident its deliberate, a corporate baboon decided this many years ago today its jus his deals and collaborations coming to fruition,

since windows 7 all these nonsense with security alerts 50 times a day scaring the crap out of normal users is another plot that absolutely makes zero sense but hey MS can exploit people's fear, defender and firewall that do nothing but increase customer engagement that without these alerts wouldn't know or care, and it makes a great reason to encourage people to upgrade, its a win win squeeze monopoly for everyone involved in the commercial end of selling PC's accept the end user.

If anyone is still not clear on MS having become an even more evil company, just go and watch any interview with the CEO. Luckily using their products is a choice, not a necessity.

why does anyone needs an online store installed on his computer when all it does is access webpages on its back end, what's wrong with a user accessing the web store page located anywhere on the web where these pages live anyway? it rationalizes MS forcing firewalls, defender, encryptions and random updates all to protect their store installed on your computer by design from factory, they don't care about anyone's identity they only care that you don't steal from their store they installed on your computer without paying them, its as simple as that, engagement for the soul propose of tracking users habits and predict what they can sell you through their pipeline, pure corporate greed.

I was going to eventually get a Xeon W for my server but I'm sad they aren't doing any with an igpu.  Sounds silly, but nothing on the dGPU side can really touch quicksync at this time. Looks like I'll be using just a consumer cpu with ECC memory instead.  Well unless Intel surprises me.  I do want to build a Xeon W for the desktop though, lol.

It all comes down to convenience, but you already knew that. These corporations can do whatever they want with our data in the name of convenience and millions of people eat that "blank" up.
