thermal limited

ac is near

its in descrete graphics mode no igpu

You may want to dial back your undervolt then, it's not stable right now. Stability test with TS bench variable frequency and linpack extreme.

And if thermally limited, just proceed with the repaste like I suggested in the other thread.

do you know of any cheaper 4080 laptops with all the bells and whistles

It's all 1999 and above. The most recommended one is the Lenovo Legion 7i Pro at 2199

It will be fun to see where certified 8000 sticks go on your board to test the CPU but more importantly to see what that memory slots can do. Now you've piqued my curiosity. I might go in there and change gears and see where these DR A-die's decide to give up the ghost on my MSI.

----

I ended up picking up Winasm's NH55 (as predicted over a year ago) and I plan on holding onto it for quite some time as it is the true last DTR'esque laptop with interchangeable components sans GPU.

I did drop this choice SP115 13900ks in there just to see but as expected a BIOS updated is needed. If you could, um, get Prema on a CPU update and get that over to me that would be swell. 😁

I tested the 13900KS on my Z690 D4 with motherboard constraints to simulate the laptop (140w + -0.100 UV) comparing it to my two 12900k chips with the same conditions I used to pre-qualify for NH55 use (it also let me quickly realize the binned 12900k from Winasm was running abnormally hot and a delid showed the STIM was missing from around one side) and the SP115 13900KS was popping out ~34k in CB23 even constrained to 140w w/ a UV.

Down the line, I'd love to eventually move that into the NH55 with a proper delid and really let it flex but some Prema love would be required.

I'll be updating the NH55 thread with results once I relid this 12900k. My conformal coating decided to crack and leak everywhere on my shelf so I had to order another bottle.

good to hear there are still ppl around to keep the NH55 lounge alive 🙂 ill be giving my lady a ram upgrade for her upcoming bday to 2x32 GB at 3200 mhz, should be fun to see how far i can push those. on the current 3800 sticks i maxed out at 3500 gear 1 and 3800 gear 2 with the 12600 cpu in it.

14th gen will actually bring comparable performance uplift and a greater efficiency uplift compared to 12th to 13th gen. The digital voltage regulator allegedly does quite a lot.

yeah thats exactly what im hoping for, better efficiency and binning on the 14th series, just what the doctor ordered for our NH55 machines 😋

now this im interested in. I was speking a desktop and its 3300 for a decent setup and only a 3060ti. too expensive, but cheaper in the long run. but this lenovo has my attention, I like everything about it. I could have it in a few months of saving and im sure the longevity of it would be a few years at 1440p. I have no money right now, so i'll have to hang tight.

one thing im thinking though is im at 1080p and thats roughly 2 million pixels and with double the power and running at 4 million pixels its basically just that either play at 1080p or play at 1440p with the same performance. I think im going to hang tight. I want it but it would be pointless as 1080p looks sharp on a 16in display and I have my 4k/120 tv if I want a higher density or bigger picture. and if im just going to hook it up to a 4k display im better off buying a desktop

The 4080 laptop is slower than the desktop 4070ti but the 4090 laptop is faster. If you're targeting 4k gaming the 4090 is definitely worth the extra 200

Before I got this laptop I was playing the last of us remastered maxed out on a 3080ti at 4k with dlss quality. I got about 80-90hz which wasn't bad for a 3rd person game.

With my current laptop I'm getting a solid 110-120hz in most areas with some dips when the game loads a new area but I don't think there's a system that doesn't.

As for resolution, i could definitely notice the increase in sharpness going from 1080p to 1440p on a 17.3 inch screen. Even more so when using DLSS.

Dang. You would make a killer salesman. I have had 1080p since the sandy bridge days. I was thinking 4080 lenovo should be good enough for 4k..but yuck the 12gb vram . 16gb will soon be the new 2gb. I don't think I have any options besides the 4090 for 4k gaming..but if I can just hang on by the seat of my pants for a year and a half..

Hey I'm just letting the hardware speak for itself 😜

Regarding 12gb vram, I tested the 3080ti and found that if I run the last of us maxed out at 4k native, the card WILL crash in between areas where new assets are loaded in.

So if you're playing at 4k with DLSS, 12gb will just get you past in modern AAA titles. It's only gonna get more demanding in the future.

If there's one caveat I'd like to put in its that I have overclocked and tuned my laptop ram. Stock Ddr5 at jedec timings are really slow and will definitely hamper performance.

As far as I know, only ryzen laptops (using Smokeless UMAF), msi laptops and custom laptop makers have ram overclocking support.

agreed on the vRAM front. ive heard several game developers speak in the past weeks and the concensus is pretty much aligned: 12GB will BARELY get u by nowadays, with 16 GB being the sensible midrange option. 24GB as on the 4090 isnt even considered highend anymore, should only be viewed as upper midrange / performance tier... WE NEED MORE VRAM!

Yup, the writing was on the wall when the ps5 released with 16gb of gddr6.

Unless you want to play with ps4 level graphics, you need at least 12gb of vram. 16gb will get you better than ps5 quality (ie pc ports).

I said it before somewhere else. The 4090 is cut down like an 80ti. Nvidia is just sandbagging to release a 4090ti at even higher prices and 48gb of vram. $3000 anyone?

Don't do it, bro. Be smart. You'll end up regretting it because it will have all of the limitations that laptop have by design. It might be more powerful than what you have now, but it will be limited and frustrating. Just keep the laptop you have when circumstances demand using a laptop (which are few unless you travel for business) and enjoy the excellence, flexibility and frugality of building a desktop. Other than motherboard, CPU and GPU once the desktop is built everything else can span many years of service, unlike a laptop. Trust me, once you make the switch you will not even want to turn on your turdbook any more. It will become too disgusting and disappointing for words. At least if you are anything like me that will happen. I literally hate laptops now. I have one. It's adequate when using a laptop is unavoidable. I don't use it unless doing so is unavoidable. Sometimes I do not even turn it on for more than a month.

@Papusan When you're right, you're right. Brother Pap has been preaching almost all of the adapters out there are trash. Now you got Jay, always a few days late, going on and on about it. He also threw a small jab at GamersNexus.

CableMod still defend using their own in-house terminals. And they try cover over (fogging) that they don't use 3dimple design. They obscure the fact that they are using in-house 2Dimple designed terminals from an unknown manufacurer... This pict is from an burned/melted CM angled adapter. Anyone is good in math? Whats the difference between 2 and 3 ? 50% ? @ryan

He still don't grasp it. I even posted this below in the comments section in his previous live stram video.... Yet he talk mostly about 3 dimpe Astron terminals. Only a very very few cable vendors/PSU manufacturers f use 3 dimple or 4 spring NTK terminals.

What you think happen if you use the cheaper 2 dimple terminals and the 12VHPWR connector start wiggle out from the pins on the GPU connector? When power connectors with two dimple terminal design start wiggle slightly out from the GPU connector (they will due heat fluctations), you risk that one or more of the pins in the GPU connector will only have contact with 1x 2 dimple (one on each side inside the terminal connector). Yep in worst case the only connection for the current will go via one wimpy dimple to the pins. The resistance in the connectors will increase and go through the roof. Poof... Fire and melting.

I know for the fact that obtaining real Astron 3 dimple / 4 spring NTK terminals for the production is more difficult for the vendors/PSU manufacturers. Maybe higher costs for those is one of the resons for cheaping out. But the loosers is always the consumers.

CableMod in-house terminals are 2 dimple design. Why all the talk about they using 3 dimple designed terminals? And Corsair as well use terminals with two dimple design for their 12VHPWR cables(Corsair use two different vendors). As a side note. 99% of the melted 12VHPWR connectors is with the angled adapters. Yet, the cables with straight and angled 90 degreees connectors use exactly the same in-house 2 dimple terminals. And the sales numbers is bigger for their custom 12VHPWR cables. This is confirmed by CableMod. Then do your math what's the problem.

Two new bites the dust.... Yep, not the cables with the same cheap 2 dimple terminal.

It’s my turn (180 degree adapter, strix 4090)

Melted Angled Adapter

Swamped with these CM adapters......... LOOL

yeah I know, when I bought this laptop I was thinking awesome. when I used the laptop I was thinking WTH why is it running so hot and under spec'd. Im getting a desktop I just don't know when. one huge drawback is the worth, now its only worth 700usd and iv'e got a few upgrades that costed(free) 80. I can't sell it for 780 as no one will buy it, if I could get 1000 id sell it and next payday get a desktop with a 3070 or better. and down the line upgrade to a 4090

dad bought me a gen 3 ssd, performance is very good.

funny thing is, its faster than my gen 4 kioxia drive

where would you puy your parts/pc from if you lived in canada? I used memoryexpress.com s system builder you can customise the build completely and only costs 75 to build. but when I spec something its always around 3300. am I missing something or has the cost gone up dramatically? what would be the minimum cpu match for a future 4090 purchase. would a i5 12th gen work?

Just got my 32gb stick and installed it in like 2 min. Performance mixing 8gb with 32gb is great. My time spy score went up 200 points. Just testing crysis to see if I get the same slow downs.. so far after 10 min it's golden...go figure. Never thought I would need more than 16gb..but then again I wasn't planning on 4k gaming

The correct way to cut costs. I wonder how much Palit saved on the cut down PCIe connector. 25 cent?

And whats wrong with this article bro @Mr. Fox? One good hint for you... Tweaktown's stupid editor that gave this PSU a golden 99% rank for features this PSU don't have. Yep this editor is either damn stupid or have never touched or seen a good PSU ever before in his whole life.

You can't even use this 850W PSU for anything outside a nvidia GPU that have the 12VHPWR connector. Yep, many custom 4000 series Nvidia cards + newest AMD cards will use the old 8-pin connector. You can't do that with this PSU because You'll need the lonely 8pin connector to power up the MB. And what if you need the single 8-pin to power up the MB if you have a GPU with 12VHPWR connector... You won't get any 8 pin connectors at all. Only the few small sata/molex connctors. Nice

Where is the fantastic features thats worth a score of 99% in this review? The small bling bling connector on right bottom?

If you're gaming at 4k then a 12700KF will do nicely. Get a pair of micron A die and oc them to 7200mhz, slot in a 4090 and you're golden

yeah I can always upgrade down the line. since im not rich(poor) it would be nice to buy a decent desktop and continually part it into a beast. I'll have two laptops if I want to couch surf or need to travel.

also off topic. but starfield didn't have my interest until I found out it was by bethseda. then I watched a video on it, now im thinking this could be one of the best games to ever be created I just hope the graphics scale well.

heres the video I watched, impressed me quite a bit

I posted a topic in the gaming section if your interested, but come sept 6th it will be a good time to be a gamer and if it scales up a benchmarker

Well, it was 114°F today, but it has finally cooled down to a brisk 104°F just before 11:00 PM. Tomorrow will be hotter. Great benching weather, especially for a laptop. 😆

You can also try and buy used from people of trust here or other forums/ebay. I mean you dont need a brand new mainboard or CPU, they work for years used, also try repacked from best buy/amazon. You can get the price like for 30% 40& in total.

Also build it yourself, thats the fun part. dont pay for someone else to do it for you

Yeah I'll definitely be playing. I've just about wrapped up the scoreboard in Fallout 76 for the season already. I'll then play Diablo IV (or get back into WoW since the wife has been asking) till Starfield drops.

I usually always try to buy used parts along with open box / return items from the retailers to save as much as possible even if I'm buying within the current generation when the opportunity presents itself. If I want something and the only option is new sometimes I just grin and bear it but I do like to save as much as possible.

Yeah your right. I think im just going to order the parts and put it together myself, if I get stumped there is always youtube. would be fun to get the ball rolling and see real power without thermal limitations
