HOW DO I UPDATE TO A Nvidia GTX 1070

If 140f (60c) is peak then that's quite respectable.

Might also be able to look at event viewer for some of the crash reports.

Thank you for recommending this. I was speaking with a friend who suggested the card's voltage is off, and perhaps it may be a fake. I've included pictures below from Event Viewer, and GPUZ to see if its possible to verify the following:

  1. why would the voltage be off.
  2. Could the card be fake?
  3. I keep seeing these two issues in Event Viewer. What could be causing this?

Thank you for taking the time to help this noob learn how get this issue fixed🙏

I've never purchased the 1060/1070 from China. They are all frankenstein cards and not official ones, making them unreliable.

Wouldn't be surprised if you bought a P4000 Quadro MXM and it worked right away.

😥 looks like I'll be sending this one back. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for your time and guidance🙏🙏🙏. I'll keep the heatsink, and place the ol' 780m back in the laptop in the interim. A friend recommended the following cards as a replacement:

Might if I suggest something. Before calling the GPU a scrap, might try an older set of drivers. Like a set from 4xx series or even from 35x series where the 1070 got first introduced (if I am not mistaken).

Randomly crasing to desktop seems like a power issue or a driver issue. Rarely a Hardware issue.

Use DDU to remove any drivers and try to edit the older ones and not use NVinstaller. I am speculating the card in not getting enough power, that is why it is failing.

Also all of the above GPU suggestions will not work. They are not in standard MXM 3.0 format and maybe they will run in clearence issues, or improper heatsink installation. Best avoid.

Hello👋👋thank you for the suggestion. I'll give the older drivers a shot to see what happens. Would you suggest official drivers from Nvidia, or the ones from Xtreme-G Nvidia https://www.reddit.com/r/XtremeG/?

I would suggest using official drivers. Modded drivers may contain settings not suitable for custom projects, like the one you are facing.

👍Thank you for responding so quickly, it is appreciated. Ok, I've downloaded the following drivers:

425.31-notebook-win10-64bit-international-whql

442.59-notebook-win10-64bit-international-dch-whql. Since I'm a noob, and a bit superstitious at this point - I downloaded these as they worked with the ol' 780m😂😂

😖UPDATE: I tried two different older drivers, and go this error both times while playing GR Breakpoint:

TEx2Naz.png

That is something I haven't seen from the days I had a PCI Voodoo Banshee in my Pentium Desktop. I remember this setting when I set the resolution too high!

Might be the culprit of bad Video Ram, or wrong capacity ram chips. Your GPU might be refurbished with other ram chips that the total amount is less than 8GB, as it should be.

A closer look at what the ram chips have on them, could help indicating the problem.

Before disassembly, try even older drivers. Go for a 35x.xx vesrion.

Thank you for going on this noob journey with me. I'm hoping someone else will come across the thread and learn from my errors. Also learn from the knowledge and patience presented to me, in getting this project completed with this card or another.

With that said, there are several things I've noticed:

1. I did in fact turn GR Breakpoint up to High and Ultra settings before the crash

2. I have no clue of what I'm looking at so its curiosity at best. Even though GPU Z doesn't show the card is fake, there are differences in this and other 1070's as noted here:

*My card (as of this writing):

C9WazwD.png

*Official MSI 1070 1070 card:

z1zwF9r.gif

3. The 780m ran quite cool, as opposed to the 1070. I purchased a new heatsink for the 1070 found here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/264535254142, which upon review may not have been the correct heatsink for the card😥. Is there a recommended heatsink for it?

4 As I'm cross referencing other 1070 Device ID's, this card doesn't match up completely. I've searched here: https://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/510.47.03/README/supportedchips.html. The only Device ID I see that is somewhat similar to this card is here:

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 1BA1 H 2, the others like the following are with Max Q Design:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 with Max-Q Design 1BA1 1028 08A1

H 2.

Before you get to fitment, it looks like that card would need supplement power?

I asked the seller more information, and am awaiting a response. I always wanted an Alienware Area 51m R2 with a 2080, however, its out of reach for me at the moment. If I could get this to work in this ol' laptop, I'd be over the moon. I saw where someone was successful in this thread:  18 R1, need advice for upgrading (noob here) Specifically the answer here: FEAZFJN.png. If this is possible my mind is...😲

Eurocom cards are absurdly overpriced and they tend to profit off of other peoples experiments. For a while they were using the cheap ebay cards as well. Probably still are, given their track record.

Does their GPU use supplement power? One of the difficulties of this hobby is that every GPU and vBIOS will have similar and/or unique conditions that must be met in order to function correctly. So while a Eurocom card may work, the MSI one you are looking may not. Not trying to convince you not to try, just trying to temper the hype. Ive been there lol

😂😂yes learning from everyone here is indeed exciting. However, you're right, the card is a bit expensive, and I may getting a little too close to the sun😂

Looking your two gpu sheets, seems everything to be ok.

Also I looked up the samsung ram chips from your first post, and it checks out that it is 8GB.

I might have another idea. Driver related idea.

I have read somewhere that if your GPU is PEG (like the 780m you had) it needs to modify different file that having your GPUs as SG.

Driver will installed as it should no matter which file you edit, but problems (possibly like yours) might arise.

So for PEG gpus (single dedicated or sli configurations), nvdmi has to be edited

For SG gpus (intel + any other gpu), nv_disp has to be edited.

The names of the files are almost similar to any version of drivers. Possibly NVclearinstall overlooks this issue with "custom" gpu setups.

Hello 👋👋will this fit in an Alienware 18 R1?

 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 8GB MSI GT75 GT73 MS-16L5 GT83 VIDEO CARD MS-1W1E1

This gpu, and possibly any 2080 will not fit, let alone power itself, from an Alienware 18. It's a 200 watt gpu. Also the cooler will not be able to handle it. And if you do manage to fit it, and put the cooler accordingly, it will need extra power supply.

I have bought two of my 980m from a seller of Eurocom at the old NBR forum, at stupid price. One failed before the warranty expired and he didn't wanted to send me another. I did sent the broken one to them, never got back what the problem was, and was offered to buy another one at a lower still hi-priced money.

Possibly a 1080 has been tested by a member here and it is a one manufacturer - specific purpose only. It is not a retail gpu. I would stay away from this options.

👋👋thank you for responding. I decided just mod the Nvidia driver itself and leave NVCleanstall.  I've been modding the nv_disp or nvdmi, with either of the following, depending on what's needed:

NVIDIA_DEV.1BA1 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070"
NVIDIA_DEV.1BA1.05AB.1028 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070"
%NVIDIA_DEV.1BA1.05AB.1028% = Section036, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D8&SUBSYS_05AB1028
%NVIDIA_DEV.1BA1%           = Section036, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1BA1

Maybe do the modding only in one of them at the time. Best chance, nv_disp only. Do post results. I am am very interested in this project, Because I might follow your path too.

I took your advice and tried an older Nvidia driver for the 1070. **EDITED FOR UPDATED INORMATION** No crashes so far, on GR Breakpoint, and Jedi Fallen Order however, Spiderman says the driver is too old, NBA 2K23 is skipping. Also the temperatures are pretty high while playing as shown here:

Also, I couldn't get RDR2 to run as I kept getting the following error:

@Jerryzago Just saw your latest message. I'll save my next driver installation progress and post it here.

UPDATE: Also a quick update on the card refund process. The person requested I send it back, and that I'd get a new 1070 in exchange. I'm hesitant on it, as the last purchase I made for an SSD from China, the seller promised something an exchange, and disappeared from eBay!! I'm a bit disappointed that I can't play RDR2 as that was the main reason for attempting the upgrade. Got tired of getting 15 fps and game crashes after an hour on the 780m.
