Adventures in performing a clean install of Windows 11 24H2:

- Modded graphics driver installations (e.g. .inf mod or using NVCleanInstall) now fail due to driver signature enforcement.  Driver signature enforcement can be disabled in "Advanced Startup Options" to enable successful installation

- CPU performance is about the same on a 7th gen quad-core (Cinebench R20 was consistently 2026 before, now 2016)

I don't think a standard Windows install would be bearable.  I used NTLite to nuke Copilot, Recall, OneDrive, Edge, Game Bar, etc. and the result is a nice, classic, Windows experience.  The clean installation used ~125 process and 2.4 GB of ram before driver installation.

Sad seeing Microsoft put all resources on the wrong spot. They should rather try fix own mess.

The update meant to rescue Windows 11 24H2 fails to install, crashes

Patch KB5044384 was supposed to solve numerous problems in Windows 11 24H2, but it's becoming a source of errors itself.

Nice. Microsoft can't even make own preffered Cpu to work properly with their latest and greatest.

Microsoft has quietly confirmed that printer-related problems on Windows 11 24H2 are real, at least for non-AMD or Intel PCs. Workaround has been provided.

And here is some that offer something more valuable than what Microsoft is able to do...

Here's an new "Poop" from Redmond

Windows 11 24H2 KB5046617 is causing new issues, including installation errors

neowin.net - November 18, 20240
Windows 11 24H2 is supposed to get better with the new cumulative updates, but that's not the case. Many users have flagged that Windows 11 KB5046617 (24H2) fails to install due to different errors...

Update on Windows 11 24H2 issues:

- On a clean install, 24H2 always makes the discrete GPU "GPU 0," no matter installing drivers in the correct order.  This can cause problems for some laptops.

- No major issues on my Precision 7540.  Clean 24H2 installation is snappier than old 23H2 installation, and Optimus works fine.

- On my Precision 7520 with not-officially-supported Kaby Lake processor, lots of problems with discrete graphics.  1) New "Unsupported PCIe device" error, preventing discrete GPU from entering low power states.  2) On battery power, discrete GPU often fails to activate, causing "Driver Power State Failure" BSOD

- 24H2 monthly update downloaded (but did not install) files for Edge and OneDrive - so I had to delete them, stop the edge update service, and remove OneDrive links from the file explorer and personal folders.  GRRR

Very nice... A new bug has been found in Windows 11 24H2 and is so serious that Microsoft has published a special support document about the problem. Isn't that special?

And the bug list continue grow for the latest and greatest OS. The usual from from Redmond. Microsoft is going from bad to worse with Windows 11

Microsoft's latest Windows 11 update is causing more headaches for users

Asus, Dell confirm new issues in Windows 11 24H2 update, including shutdown bug

windowslatest.com - November 26, 20240
Windows 11 24H2 has more issues, including compatibility problems with Dell and Asus PCs, which might also affect users with other hardware

Microsoft halts Windows 11 24H2 updates on PCs running certain Ubisoft games, and those that are patched lose performance

Microsoft is going from bad to worse with Windows 11 at a time when time is running out for the robust and fast Windows 10.

Windows 11 24H2 is now incompatible with USB scanning devices, too

Windows 11 24H2 increasingly shows how the Windows Insider program does nothing to improve Windows security and reliability. The number of show-stopper bugs experienced by customers who updated to the latest OS version is staggering. Meanwhile, Microsoft is just saying that they're working on (yet another) fix with no specific release date in sight.

Windows 11 KB5048667 install fails, performance, gaming issues. Windows 11 24H2 affected

Widowslatest.com - December 13, 2024

Windows 11 KB5048667 is turning out to be a disaster for some people, and we can confirm that there's an issue where the update could fail to install.  It’s also making some PCs run slower than usual, and we think it’s related to a bug with the CPU scheduler in the Windows 11 Patch Tuesday.

What is Christmas holidays without news around Windows 11 ?

Windows 11 KB5048685 update seems to be infested with various bugs including those affecting Start menu, Wi-Fi, as well as installation problems.

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 11 24H2 KB5044284 and KB5046617 can't install future updates. A workaround has been provided.

And of course Microsoft have to offer guides... They know their own trash best.

Edit: posting this from the old dell 7440 running it's original 8.1 from 02\2015. Assuming Statcounter is vaguely correct and 3 billions (?) total win installs, 0,29 % = 8.700.000 8.1's out there, so still got lots of company :O) ...and 72.000.000 win7's still alive !

also mentioned in BleepingComputer

this one is not an issue for those who obtained updated Windows 24H2 11 ISOs with the December 2024 (KB5048667) or newer update included (at least MVS & VLSC users can get these)

Quote

The bug does not impact security updates applied via Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog website and does not occur when the latest December 2024 security update is used.
