Questions about 120hz display upgrade

Recommended Posts

Hi

I will upgrade the screen of my Alienware m17x r4 from 60hz to 120hz. I have three concerns.

 1. Recommended Fabrication 120Hz panel code LTN173HT02-D02. I have a Samsung np700g7c 120hz lvds laptop. I want to install the screen. Model number: LTN173HT02-C02. Will this panel cause compatibility issues with Alienware's eDP system? (eDP cable available)

 2. I'm looking for suggestions to minimize the possibility of damage when removing the frame of my M17x R4.

3. What brand of adhesive should I use when gluing the bezel in place to ensure that it has fabrication quality?

Sorry for my broken english.

M17x R4 screen code.

Hi, never heard of this Part Number (C02) but on the old thread on NBR, it was stated to avoid the C01 revision of the panel (see the link : https://archive.ph/0HLPD)

I have an m17x r4 with 120hz 3D screen- i7-3940xm and GTX 680m and am unable to upgrade the GPU. It will not accept anything I have tried in SG or PEG or IGFX. It has A11 unlocked BIOS and was told that I can only use what it came with for the GPU. I would love to get this to work with an RTX card. The screen is beautiful, crisp and love using it. The 680m overclocks nice and its fun but just so limited for upgrading. I don't know about the screen you are looking at or any other screen but I would love to upgrade this m17xr4 or my other m17xr4 that has a 1600x900 screen.

Will keep watching as to how you progress. I have searched the NBR archives but can't get any real direction

Yes, it is stated in many articles when it is not compatible with C01. Still, I have the opportunity to try. If there is no possibility of burning the motherboard, I will try it.

I don't understand what you want to say. Don't every m17x r4 model have a GPU upgrade? I was thinking of setting up the P5000 with 120hz. In fact, if I had known that it had EDP support, I would have even had the opportunity to buy and test an RTX GPU from devices provided by a software company I know. But first I need to know which 120hz panels I can install on the m17x r4, other than the D02 code. Sorry for my bad english

I tried RTX 3000, GTX 1080, GTX 980/970 and P4000 in m17xr4 with 120hz 3D screen and always got 8 beeps. It is not possible to run in SG mode. Only in PEG because of the 3D screen. The other m17xr4 with 1600x900 screen runs all those cards in SG mode only. To run it in PEG would need GTX 880m or lower.

What is the reason? Could this issue be related to an issue with your device? This is the first time I've heard of such a thing, I know that normally 120Hz PEG mode runs all models up to Pascal GPUs.

@ssj92 knows more about it, he told me something about the screen being EDP and the cards not being able to support it. I do want to upgrade both laps with better screens but it seems beyond my knowledge. I've looked at alot of screens but felt I went down the rabbit hole. So I put it on the back burner. Your post gave me some hope but this really needs to be researched, I don't want to have a box of screens like I do GPU cards and CPU's

But this is ridiculous. I have already learned from the topics below that Pascal GPUs work with 120 Hz EDP. I've been researching for years. I've seen these upgrades made in many forums. Now I don't understand how it is said that this is not possible. Was it all a lie?

In each title, it is specifically stated that 120hz and EDP connection are required for Pascal GPUs. While there are many successful projects implemented with Pascal GPU, I cannot understand being told that there is no EDP and 120hz support.

Lets make sure we are on the same page, I am talking about the 3d screen that requires the Nvidia 3D Vision glasses to watch video and games in 3D. It is literally 3 dimensional when wearing the glasses. My m17xr4 120hz 3D screen can do this. Is this what you are trying to achieve?

This is why I am having such a hard time trying to upgrade to a better screen

As you know, panels such as 240hz and 360hz are preferred for smoother and professional playing of FPS games such as Counter Strike Valorant Apex Legend Fortnite. My goal is to play a smoother game by installing a screen with a 120hz refresh rate, not 60hz. I don't need Optimus 3D etc. If you mentioned that Pascal gpu does not only support 3D, sorry if I misunderstood due to my bad English.

Hi,

I'm pretty sure that quadro pascal & geforce 1060 / 1070 work in PEG mode. But it may vary if you have a wrong vbios... Some pascal geforce have gsync vbios that may prevent screen from working in PEG. Same goes for pascal quadros. You might wanna ask @TheQuentincc about it

@sliderfra Do you have knowledge about this subject? I have M17x R4, it has gtx680m and 3840qm 60hz 1080p hardware. I want to install a 120hz panel and P5000 graphics processor. However, it is said that Pascal GPUs do not support this. Doesn't it support 3D display? Or 120hz screen?

I just tried GTX 980 and RX 6600 XT and both gave 8 beeps after cMos reset. I reinstalled GTX 680 and set up BIOS and it is downloading NVidia grephics, it will normally update 2 old graphic drivers then I will install the latest for the card. I bought this m17xr4 in 2022 not knowing all the details about the 120hz 3D screen. In 2012 at microcenter when I purchased my m18xr2 the sales guy said "no you don't want that one" speaking about the 3D 120hz m17xr4 and led me over to the m18xr2 which I still upgrade and use daily. ?????????? what was with the 3D??????? I now know!

On the R4, the edp cable for the 3d screen is 40pin. So basically you can put any edp screen with that câble, including 4 lanes 2k/165hz screen.

So why would I go with an EDP instead of LVDS? Don't more cards work with LVDS and there is a 2nd screen connector next to the 1 being used. I don't remember what that 1 is for. Since RTX 3000/4000/5000 all work with LVDS or in order to have higher screen HZ it has to be EDP?

The second connector on the MB is for edp. The cable is 40pin 0.5mm pitch so most edp screens should work (except the narrow 0.4mm ones that may need an adapter). But the problem is the fitting as the 3D screen has same layout as LVDS (big metal frame with side mountings) whereas new edp screens are all slim type with top/bottom mounting tabs (or without any tabs at all). In any case it has to be DIY mounting with 3M rubber tape. But it works 🙂

Hi

I read the description, and although it initially excited me, I could not find an article that was tried and tested in practice. Loading 2k 165hz or 1080p 240hz on R4 is more incredible for me than having a 4090+480hz device :D. But I have no idea how this is possible.

If one of the new type screens is installed on the R4, do you think that converter device will cause incompatibility problems with the mobo and GPU?

@aldarxt   Let me also ask this. There is a 1070 like this.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/164357449828?epid=20048865121&itmmeta=01HRNBZSM7D44YVGQHXX8RDESA&hash=item264477a864:g:LzwAAOSwWSVeFdFU

The price seems cheap, do you think it is reliable? If it is repaired and sold, do you think it should be purchased?

Some 1070 models for R4 are said to cause vbios and tdp issues.

Which brands should be considered in this regard? Normally, I was thinking of buying P5000 because of this risk, but since it was sold for almost 3 times the price, I don't think so seriously.

If there is a 1070 model without any problems, I would like to buy it and complete the GPU upgrade.

I have an Aetins GTX 1080 that I can't get to work on m17xr4 and m18xr2. It worked for about an hour and then I got code 43 and couldn't do anything else. I purchased an RTX 3000 and it works great in both. Also have an HP RTX 4000 could only fit in m18xr2 but I flashed the vBios and now I can't get it to work. The RTX 3000 is $359 on ebay I think that would be the best choice

Since I will be installing a 120Hz screen, I need to choose Pascal cards. Even though you said that Pascals do not work at 120hz, in any case, 120hz, 144hz etc. from these screens. I need to install one. This is my primary goal.

The reason I chose M17x instead of M18x was to make a device with a high screen refresh rate. He also disagrees with the idea that 880m and above cards will not support edp 120hz. Many articles with the 1070 installed have already stipulated the use of the EDP 120hz display feature. I don't understand the purpose of claiming the exact opposite.

Many articles with the 1070 installed have already stipulated the use of the EDP 120hz display feature. I don't understand the purpose of claiming the exact opposite.

Pascal cards do work with edp screen on R4:

do you have the unlocked BIOS in it? Have you tried to reset CMOS?

I definitely think it's a vbios issue.

Get in your BIOS, find the Non Turbo Flex support and change it to disable. Then put another GPU in your laptop

Yes I have A11 unlocked bios and always have to do cMos reset whanever I switch GPU. I have 2 m17xr4's, 1 with 1600x900 screen and 1 with 120hz 3D screen. The 1600x900 r4 is pretty much li9ke the m18xr2, they both can run the same GPU's and CPU's and RAM and Drives. All have A11 unlocked BIOS from SVl7

Maybe I should go to the A14 but its locked
