13th and 14th gen intel CPU self destruct issue.

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know for sure if our CPUs in the M18 r1 and r2 are affected by the Intel ordeal?  From what I found pretty much any intel CPU in the 13th and 14th gen that uses more than 65 watts is affected by this, mobile or desktop. Intel is supposed to be releasing a microcode update for the chips but that would have to pass through Dell? that means the new locked out bios would have to be used...

I think its entirely possible they could be effected especially if the system can sustain high TDP on the CPU and has recorded high voltages during such use. Luckily most people with these kinds of systems have a three year warranty or longer to cover any issues like this. Its a shame they are like this because even if you were to wear out a USB port from daily use you may very well need a motherboard replacement with a different CPU or GPU.

Here is an article XMG made about the issue concerning laptop chips as well. I feel like they are pretty transparent for a vendor compared to most:

That's a shame. once in a while i will get a fuzzy screen upon boot and have to reboot to get rid of it.  probably the last Alienware I get. I'm hopping its not from something failing. might try a fresh install of windows if it keeps up. its so rare and random though.  Since new I have the max temps set at 80-85c and have the cpu undervolted heavily. Which could be were the fuzziness is coming from but I've had the same undervolt for years now, so idk. Not a fan of having 6000 cores to deal with. wish I bought the AMD version.

Makes total sense 13th and 14th gen laptop variants are equally susceptible to the degrading issues since they really are just clock/power downed desktop variants at this point.

Intel will say no, but they are.

My M18R1 and the first CPU in my M18R2 were both affected.  The M18R1 was a lemon anyways and was eventually replaced.  The CPU in the R2, by the time I got rid of it, wouldn't play basically any games anymore.  It would just crash or BSOD constantly whenever I tried.  Intel does not want to deal with the RMA costs of the countless laptop motherboards they would have to replace, so they are sweeping it under the rug until warranties run out and then you are screwed.

I've had good luck so far with my R1. but from day one I kept it under 85c. eventually going to 75C via throttlestop which in turn lowered my gpu temps. also undervolted heavily. still get around 27-28k cinebench scores.

edit:

"good luck" in respects to the mobo not dieing.  other things have been terrible.

if framework or another brand steps up their gpu game ill probably go with one of those in the future.
