Its more like now, newer hardware is seeming to release at a more rapid rate. So god knows what how many generations you would have to futureproof a laptop.(futureproofing is a scam anyway.) Also intel changing sockets each gen with some exceptions make it hard. Amd with the scokets not really being changable works kinda more well with dtr's IMO.

Before it was a good reason to futureproof a laptop but now its kinda pointless. A Ryzen 7 and Intel i7 CPU will last for several years and its doubtful that future generations will improve performance that much. As for GPUs it depends if you're going to play games on 1080p, QHD, or 4K which is a waste on a laptop imo. A RTX 3060 GPU will last for several years especially with DLSS and FSR which a lot of games use these days. By the time you need to upgrade your laptop it'll will be on its last legs through years of use and abuse. Back then the average BGA gaming laptop will last about 2-3 years because the GPU can no longer handle the latest games anymore and it was the main reason why true DTR laptops exists including MXM and LGA CPUs. But now its barely a market for it anymore so ofc OEMs will cater to causals instead of enthusiasts because it'll make them more money

I am against T&L laptops because they cant handle heat much especially when they're stuffed with a powerful CPU and GPU and plus having soldiered basic components like RAM, WIFI and SSD. Also in a couple of years they will overheat and die.

yep thats reminiscent of the Clevo story where they were planning to release a 3080Ti in MXM form factor but Nvidia wouldnt let them 🙄

Is anything else known about this? Was the 3080 Ti only meant for a new machine with a 1700 socket or also to upgrade existing X170SM-G and KM-G units?

Clevo itself never offered gpu upgrade kits, this was only done through vendors like eurocom. but the possibility alone to have such a gpu in a socketable form factor would mean that it will at some point be available on the aftermarket and thus to potentially upgrade older machines.

edit: re-read your post, so afaik Clevo had already implemented the heatsink capability to accommodate a larger gpu die as found on the 3080 Ti laptop gpu in the X170KM. but yeah, green goblin wouldnt let that happen...

Hi, for myself any laptop still have a socket, it's usually called the "BGA socket" 😁

Indeed it's not that simple but when you have the right hardware it's a little bit longer.

I'm here because I want to upgrade my Dell Precision 7720 from it's 7700HQ to an 8C/16T CPU, 9th and 10th are still using the same BGA1440 package. I believe the pinout is the same from 6th gen BGA1440 to 10th gen BGA1440 unlike LGA1151 (why bother to change when nobody is gonna upgrade his soldered CPU ?).

So hardware wise it's probably fine, but I'm wondering where it's gonna get tricky software wise... Do any of guys ever saw or heard about an upgrade like that ? I know that I probably need to modify the bios like with LGA1151, the microcode, the ME, vbios etc BUT I don't know how well it's working with Dell, because indeed it's a Dell computer, that usually comes with some trickery... Maybe some Alienware users might enlighten me ?

Thanks

I was the one that run an overclocked I7 3920XM @4.2GHz all-core in a M6700 with 32GB 2133MHz DDR3L, a Quadro P4000 and a 4k eDP display (also did dual LVDS/eDP internal display)

wouldnt surprise me in the least if absolutely nothing changed on the bga pinout and its running juuust fine with newer cpu gens. so much for the artificial BS socket change every other cpu gen, at least with intel....
