alienware area-51m R1 bios and vbios information

Recommended Posts

well , first of all i'm so pleased to find this forums since i was an old member of the notebookreview and it was a shame that it went like that i learned alot from many members there like Mr.fox and ssj92 and i really hope that the information that was there moves to here so there work and the work of people like them stay helping everyone who in needs for it.

so this thread is going to be in two parts.

1 - all i could gather as a current information and files for the bios and the vbios of the device

   - all the new updates of the bios starting from V 1.7.3 and above has a lock to not let the GPU surpass 75 degrees C so the only current solution i know is to revert back to bios V 1.5 which doesn't have this setting . however to prevent dell from auto updating your bios back to the a later version we have todo the following

  * uninstall dell support assestance before downgrading the bios

  * disabling the UEFI capsule update in the bios under the security tab .

after doing that you are good to go downgrading the bios to V 1.5.

  * after doing that its time to update the Vbios so the new updated Vbios V 1.0.0.5 does not allowing the GPU to pass the 150W mark so the solution i know is to revert back to V 1.0.0.3 which will allow it to go upto 200W ( still low by the way ) but better then 150W limit. the good news is that downgrading the vbios is much easier so you can just download it from the youtube link below and follow the video

here is the link to the youtube link to the process including all the required files

NOTE: thanks to the guy who created the video he really helped alot by doing that

2 -  all the questions i have regarding the same subject :

   - is there availble unlocked bios for this laptop ?

   - is there available a modded Vbios for this 2080 GPU to raise the wattage and down volt it ?

   - if all the above is not possible , is there any other way to override this limitations ? ( i have an alienware 18 with 4930MX and i'm using throttlestop to overclock it ) but i was hopping for away to do that from bios same like what i used to do with my lovley M18X R1

any suggestions is really appreciated.

Hey it's my video, LOL.

There is no unlocked BIOS for this laptop. Only way to get it is to remove current PCH and replace with one that doesn't have boot guard.

As far as I know there is no modded vBIOS for RTX 2080 unless someone finally modded it. You can undervolt it though. Go to my video above, look for my videos and look for GPU undervolting guide. I use my RTX 2080 I think in there.

CPU can be OC using throttlestop, ALSO have a video on that LOL

oh man , that is great to know who is ssj92. thanks for the advise man . i just watched both of your undervolting videos thanks for sharing . i used to do that tweaking for the undervolting on my alienware 18 with the 4930mx awhile ago

i used throttle stop on the area51m but i found out that i got similar results in terms of the score and temperature while undervolting using ACC so i will stick with ACC for the CPU overclocking and undervolting .

as for the GPU , i extracted the bios from GPU-z and i'm thinking to try to play with the bios a little bit ,, ( dont worry i did undervolted my 980M sli bios on the alienware 18 so i will play it safe.

i know that its much easier to do the GPU with msi afterburner but i like to have less apps to do these stuff on my laptop i dont know why .. i guess i like everything to be handled by the bios if i can.

however i just found out something interesting ; if i downloaded the july 2019 version of the ACC and the OC software from dell support drivers then i will have the control again over the GPU thermal limits again but it was very important that  i change the profiles file in the system to read only .

Is it true that the GPU cant be upgraded to the 2080 Super ?

Im guessing there is no option for RTX 30xx since I think they nixed the machine altogether and it doesnt use MXM to my understanding?

they changed the 2080 super design slightly so we can't get it into area 51m r1 easily. Since there was no R3 for RTX 3000 series we are stuck here. I wouldn't be surprised if VBIOS flash + 2080S core swap worked fine.

so much for their exaggerated marketing regarding ULTRA UPGRADEABLE LAPTOP when they initially launched the area 51m... aint nobody gonna tell me they HAD to implement those super slight mods so as to make the new gpus incompatible with the old chassis....ugh

Pretty much everything, slightly. How annoying.

ikr. although i dot understand the reasoning behind i.e. getting the vRAM chips closer to the main silicon to improve latencies and bandwidth. still, in such a form factor it shouldnt matter either way....compatibility is way more important!

Someone with a bga station could probably swap the cores and it would probably work fine.

There was no reason for them to switch designs, they just didn't want us R1 users upgrading to the R2 gpu.

but to be honest it's hardly an upgrade. Would have been better if an R3 with RTX 3080Ti was made.

Ok, thanks. I ordered also the R2 Heatsink. So hopefully the Mainboard fits then I will have an R2.

Hi guys, got an Area 51m for playing around a bit - it came with just about everything (mouse, sleeve, original box, backpack) so I could not resist 😄

Overall I have to say that the hardware seems to have some potential but the bios is  and the ACC, too. Is there a recommended Geforce driver / ACC combo?

As I did a factory reset I am now always bothered with a suggestion to update the ACC but I fear that the version that I will be installing is not the recommended one - had that with the bios already but now I am on 1.5.0 and I also have the 200W vbios.

Ideally I would prefer if ACC only sets the things that I cannot set elsewhere which is RGB, fan mode and power mode and then I could use MSI Afterburner and Throttlestop for the CPU and GPU.

Oh and kudos going out to @Tech Freak who posted the instructions for the bios stick on the old forum and @ssj92 who put a download up where I only had to swap in the bios file I wanted to first get to 1.12.0 and then in a second step to 1.5.0. And to @i.bakar for starting this thread and asking some questions that I also had. Can't say that I much like the answers as the 51m seems to be a pretty locked down design but given that I will say that it still benches decent but not great.
