M4800 Owner's Thread

Recommended Posts

(Sorry for a little bit of offtop, but I have got it because I had to rush from my country to get here, so I was in need of something that will replace my home PC)
I am very new with M4800, mine has an i7 4800MQ, FirePro M5100 and 16 GB 1600 mHz Hynix.
What are the best ways to tame this CPU? It runs very hot for me, I will probably have to change thermal interface to something else (It has a Noctua NT-H1, but I wouldn't say that it has changed anything, I would say it even became worse with it). What can you recommend? And what GPU is better for this machine? I would love to install Nvidia T1000 but it is too expensive...

I have Gelid GC Extreme paste in mine, and its a 4810MQ. I also have limited in Power Management on Windows to 99% CPU cap.

GPU wise I find AMD cards better in a way because you do not have to mod the drivers at all to get it working. It just works, providing it has a Dell VBIOS on it. I use a WX 4150 4GB card which is good enough, but they can be difficult to find that aren't originating fom China. Originally my WX4150 was intended for HPs, but I was able to flash a Dell VBIOS on it to use it properly. But there are a couple others.

Personally I wouldn't use a GPU that does not have Direct X 12_0 or 12_1 featureset. Meaning the M2000M or M1200M are out of the question.

I have been looking into a new GPU as well, and have been looking into the T1000 but budget is extremely tight, and sourcing one is difficult if you wanna avoid AliExpress. The Quadro M2200 could be a viable alternative. I wouldn't recommend the M2000M or M1200M due to the lack of DirectX12_0 featureset.

Well, I guess I will look for M2200 (I will have to replace the cooling solution for that, sadly)
Speaking about thermal solution — is Honeywell 7950 good?

You might have to, but I'm not absolutely sure if it's necessary, since GPU to GPUs some cards have the same height when it comes to the chip. Alternatively you could apply a shim to the current heatsink as some have done back in the old thread on NBR. It should be on the archive link.

As for Honeywell I never tried that but others who have, have said it's really good and is used by OEMs like Lenovo for their machines. Actually I might reconsider and get that one too for my Dell, since that can get toasty if I video edit and would be nice to have better thermals.

Alright, I'll order Honeywell this evening.
I have also noticed that even though my screen is 1080p, it is eDP, which will be handy in future.

That's even better, because Dell in 2013 used boards that had eDP to LVDS converters and as a result you'd have different lid variants as well as hinge and covers too. I think they changed to eDP around 2014/2015.

It was incredibly tedious trying to source a new MB, new lid with the hinges and even the connector to transform my M4800 from LVDS to eDP. So, I guess if it's eDP the thing to note here is that if you put in a UHD panel it'll disable iGPU. It won't disable the iGPU if you opt for a panel beyond 60Hz that's at 1080p. Mine is 120Hz, but I went with the TN due to the apparent accurate colour reproduction. It's a N156HHE-GA1. It also means if the panel sucks then you can change it to something better providing it has the right mounting holes.

So, I wasn't sure where else to get a new cable. I looked into AliExpress and saw this.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003087841893.html

8-pin  at 15cm. Not sure what the pitch is (I assume its the width of each pin) but from the looks of it,  it's what I may be looking for. I may order a pack just to be sure I don't get something dodgy within the package. If all goes well then I could recommend this to anyone who is looking for a new flex for the touchpad since these can be brittle after replacing the top assembly if you miss out something.

Not too expensive either, and even if it means waiting for a few weeks it's worth the wait.

So the pack arrived. Albeit the snag now is that they're too long for what they're for but surprisingly they work fine. The length of the pins is ever so slightly shorter. Had to origami it a little bit to fit properly. It's making the proper connections meaning the touchpad and top buttons work as well as the little nub. But if anyone is looking for a replacement then in my opinion is not exactly it.

The original cable is rated for 105C, while the other is 80C. And since it's situated near the GPU when installed is a minor concern.

Can confirm the Honeywell 7950 is really good, I've noticed much better thermal performance with the CPU (switched from Kryonaut iirc)

However, the hot spot on my T1000 is still 98c under max load after the change, causing throttling. Pretty sure I have good die/VRAM contact.. Can any other T1000 owners report on their temperatures under max load?

Considering joining the CPU and GPU heatsinks tbh

I noticed on the WX4150 in my Dell is that the fans take forever to kick in and havent' figured out a fix through a VBIOS flash... What must I do to alleviate this?

I've been using a KingSener branded FV993 battery (97Wh/9000mAh), has been working great for me.

If you're actually looking for the best in terms of capacity though, the CMP branded batteries found here claim to have an extended 112Wh/10050mAh capacity.

https://www.ebuy7.com/item/561806111328

Haven't seen any reviews of it though or confirmation that the capacity is accurate.

Pascal cards won't work with Windows because of a vBIOS/ACPI conflict.  You will get BSOD at boot every time.  Early engineering sample vBIOS images can work around this, but to my knowledge these have only been discovered for P3000, P4000, and P5000 GPUs.

You can use Pascal GPUs with Linux on M4800.  You can also use later generations (Turing+) on Windows with M4800, the issue vBIOS is specific to Pascal.

You can take some extreme steps to get Windows booting with Pascal.

Oh boy the CPU fan's still exhibiting some rattle from the blades touching the casing of the enclosure. It looks like it teeters when spun slowly and it kinda looks like its the rotor being slightly bent? But for some reason if I reassemble the fan together again the noise stops.

And searching for a new fan is difficult due to having more used than new.

Soooo.. I have installed Honeywell PTM 7950, it was very hard to install, succeeded after 3 tries.
In terms of temps - under a load my laptop (2.7 GHz lock + undervolt) could go as high as 86 degrees,
but now I have unlocked it, allowing it to turbo and it has no undervolt (for now) and it is very slowly rising to 75, spiked 80 for a few seconds and went down to 50.

Ouch. One of my major complaints over the M4800 is having revisions of the board using different embedded video interfaces... I don't think there should be issues running a newer GPU, but the use of Optimus/Enduro must be left on for output to the panel otherwise blank screen. And it also limits what you can install in there.

Going from LVDS to eDP board won't be a problem for the main base chassis. The difference is mounting the panels. You'd need a new lid with hinges, and bezel and even a new eDP cable.

I'd still stick with your LVDS unit, and perhaps over time get the parts needed in the meantime, and then when ready you'll have what's needed to make the switch.

This should be a tip, too. If the eBay listing of an M4800 has the service tag on, look up on Dell support. If the spec mentions anything eDP like this, then it should confirm it's eDP. Even a low resolution 768p eDP can be switched to 1080p:

If I find anything appear on eBay that's able to be shipped outside US or UK I can send the link over. But for now I'd save searches on eBay for these parts.
