M4800 Owner's Thread

Recommended Posts

Gentlemen, may I ask for a bit of help? Just installed M2200M into M4800 with 4k display, instead of an older Kepler card.

BIOS doesn't recognize it (I take this is normal) and windows refused to boot normally - I had to uninstall the nvidia driver while being in a safe more. BIOS version is A25.

Now, once nvidia driver was uninstalled, the LCD works fine and windows 10 boots fine, but the video card reported as a basic Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.

Any ideas on the best course of action? I recall there was a firmware update for the vcard (I have it stored somewhere) and video driver modifications (which I hoped to avoid).

Thanks & Regards,

Mikhail

NVIDIA puts GPU+laptop model ID together in their driver INF file.  If you're running an "unsupported" GPU+laptop model combination, you'll have to do an INF modification in order to get the driver to load.

Curiously, I've tried to install Nvidia drivers for quadro... and it did just work. Pheeeew. In the process I got some nerves prematurely dead and a A26 firmware installed (where I had to go back and install K2100, get machine going, then get M2200 back).

Aaron, thanks for your quick response and help.

Although, M2200 behaves differently when it comes to what video modes are visible/work.

What kind of thermal pads are used to install T1000 on an AMD heatsink?
I mean in mm (0,5 mm , 1 mm , etc.)
I am just preparing, because I will probably have to buy new ones (Why not)

So far, the M2200 (got it for $100 a while ago) proved to be a substantial improvement over K2100 and it seems like M4800 (and probably M6800 for that matter) can be made quite useful even further - the SSD can be expanded to 2+8+8TB. Since GPU is used in both work and entertainment this is a single incredible performance upgrade. We don't see this to be possible in notebooks world that often.

Now I'm curious about T1000, T2000, A1000 and A2000. Although, they are hard to find in MXM A form (please share if you know where they can be found and if they are compatible). There are some ridiculous $$ offers targeted at embedded applications. I haven't seen any of them with X-bracket depicted, probably worth looking into.

I will get Honeywell PTM7950 for CPU and GPU, and maybe new GPU/SSDs. I already got new back plate, palm rest, bezels and it looks pretty clean now.

Insofar, the disappointing limitation is... DP1.2, since Haswell DP is limited by 540MHz clock and 4k&60Hz&8bits is 533MHz. I have a S95B QDOLED with 4k 144Hz 444 10bit and am limited by 4&60&8bit, 1440p60 and 1080p144. 144 is silky smooth. Surely, M2200 will not run a lot of titles well with 4k & 120/144, but even newer cards will be still limited by DP 1.2.

Guys, did you change stock thermal pads on cpu and gpu vrm/memory? Just wanted to make sure 1.5mm is of the right thickness. My thermals aren't the best right now, after prolimatech pk3 and gelid pads.

I had the nvidia heatsink, I used 2mm Zezzio 12.8 w/mk pads (from aliexpress) on the vram and kept the stock pads on the inductors

Not sure about AMD heatsink

Got my T1000 from the secondhand version of taobao called Xianyu, need a shipping forwarder in China  to purchase from it (I used superbuy). The cards don't come up often though so I got quite lucky to get mine for like $140 or so (converted from yuan to usd). I occasionally have a look for them but I haven't seen any in a few months

edit: There is one here on aliexpress but it is fairly expensive i guess considering that it's gddr5 version

Thank you. Did you actually measure the original one? 1.5mm had a slight impression on them during intermediate reassembly, and the original pads had some good impressions.

A1000/A2000 would be even a better upgrade, but I presume we won't see them at a reasonable price for quite some time.

No problem, nope I didn’t measure anything but you are right, mine also have sorta deep impressions on them from the pressure (but no cracking) so I guess anything from 1mm to 2mm would work

I am really interested in acquiring an A2000 8GB and I’m gonna keep looking until I can get one, I think they’ll start reselling as soon as a 4050 ti gets announced bc companies will want to upgrade

The A2000 states 35W or 60W TDP - no idea how to adjust that but I think 35W would be better, the T1000 is a 50W card and runs hot in the M4800 (98c hotspot) so 60W would likely throttle hard

About Cyberpunk — tried to mess around with game settings, runs at 15 FPS, but input lag is completely fine, so I think that CPU is doing ok with that game and GPU isn't (still on FirePro M5100, modded driver).

I went with Gelid Ultimate 1.5mm and replaced all the pads on CPU and GPU heatsinks. It's a known fact that better thermal pads can actually worsen CPU/GPU temperature due to a higher heat influx into the (rather limited) heatsink.

Which

can experience, due to the carbon-based high thermal conductance pads Zezzio. My peak thermals are 80-85C for GPU and 90-95C for CPU (throttles) under stress tests and I recall when I repasted it upon purchase (but didn't replace tpads) CPU didn't hit throttling, which was pretty impressive, given FEA analysis I did back then.

Something else to consider: I bought a set of matched fans, with some sort of advanced bearings (they are somewhere in a drawer), maybe they are better than the stock ones?

Speaking of fan control, has anyone tried adjusting the fan settings in Polaris BIOS editor for a WX4150? My GPU keeps hitting 90c and the fans kick in then... But I want it to happen much earlier than 75c otherwise I'm constantly having to wait until it kicks in properly. I looked at Polaris BIOS editor and the threshold for the fans seem to be at 90.

EDIT: Been toying with the Polaris editor and now got the fan to kick in earlier... I'm still tuning it until it fully kicks in at 75C. So far it's still functioning just fine with the current parameters at 80C, at least it's not 90 anymore.

I have decided to experiment with my M5100, but any changes to VBIOS would ruin UEFI and signature... at least I thought so. There is a small program named "GOPUPD" that can update signature and add UEFI back to VBIOS. Look it up on Google. "lordkag's GOPUPD"

I was overclocking my m5100 with VBE https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/vbe7-vbios-editor-for-radeon-hd-7000-series-cards.189089 /
the received vbios resets the uefi mode
after the firmware, it worked in optimus mode, when it was turned off, there was no image on the laptop screen, only on the external monitor, I couldn't even go into the bios to turn on optimus again 🙂 I flashed the factory vbios from the external monitor so that everything return as it was (it turns out you could just turn off the cmos battery to reset the bios)
with the help of your hint, I returned uefi to it, and now it works in discrete graphics mode on the laptop screen.
many options in vbe do not work for me, the voltage cannot be raised, I set large values, but there were no changes, the core and memory frequencies can be raised, so as not to flash once again, you can set with a margin of 950/1500, and using msi afterburner gradually increase the frequencies, but do not use furmark for tests, it it shows some incredible figures and in a couple of minutes it will heat up your gpu to 85 degrees, at this point my laptop turns off, but there will be no such heating in games, the maximum that I have seen is 79 degrees, but usually in the range of 69-75. Depending on the game and the number of fps on the core, I got 890/940 on memory mis afterburner limits to 1465.
tests show 20-30% increase, fans will work noisier.
the last vbios that could be found: 015.036.000.006.046584 https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/230265/230265
during overclocking tests, it seemed to me that it was more stable than my 046365, I have elpida memory
I use the old driver 27.20.14540.3(pro 21.Q1.1) most of the time I don't use the m5100, and after disabling all gpu services, the max is heated to 36 degrees, probably this is "zerocore", I don't have a blue screen on this driver when I exit sleep mode in "zerocore" mode

Glad to hear that it helped. I have abandoned an idea of OC-ing this GPU for now, because it is performance for me is fine for the most part and OC doesn't change the fact that it is only 2 GB VRAM, so I can't play any demanding games.

The CPU fan has its dreaded rattling again. Is it possible for the rotor of the fan to lose its magnetism? And also when I cleaned it with a swab, black residue came off and I wasn't sure what it really was.
