Gamer Posted August 30, 2022 Share Posted August 30, 2022 Still have my 8 year old AW18 880m SLI in use for work. Bought it new, silly me but still love it! Wanted to upgrade it a few years ago but not much hardware was available back then except CPU. Through this forum I had seen the times had changed! 🙂  Started with the cpu, upgraded the 4900MQ to an 4940XM just last week and unlocked the bios. Now I want to upgrade to a 1060 (for now, RTX3000 later). Got it for € 150, so couldn't let this one go.  Does the 880M 100w heatsink fit on the 1060 without hassle? Or do I need to take out the dremel?  I'm an old retired overclocker, but the bug has bit me again 🙂  Thanks!    1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

razor0601 Posted August 30, 2022 Share Posted August 30, 2022 Yes, you have to use your Dremel. Look at the picture. I have marked the area where you have to grind something from the Heatsink. But like jaybee said post more pics from the two cards and the Heatsink. 1 Schenker DTR 15(P751TM1) @Dsanke Bios, I7-8700, 32GB 2666MHz RAM, GTX 1060, 15,6“ 4K B156ZAN02.2 Display Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Gamer Posted September 6, 2022 Author Share Posted September 6, 2022 This is the heatsink I have. A18 LEFT NV   100W AT0 UN00 D0C0 // 0R5NKT - 3 pipes  So I guess to clear some space, need to flatten the areas marked in red?     Made the changes, installed the card but the laptop doesn't turn on. No beeps or anything, card dead?  Thx.  Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
At0mX Posted September 6, 2022 Share Posted September 6, 2022 Nah, with that heatsink you need to dremel the whole middle area in green, hence why people have suggested to use AMD heatsinks : Main rig : ROG STRIX X299-XE GAMING - I7-9800X @4Ghz - 32gb RAM - RTX 3800TI - lots of NVME SSDs - Windows LTSC 2021 Laptop 1 : Macbook Pro 16" 2021 - M1 Pro - 1TB - 32gb RAM - 16 core GPU Laptop 2 : Macbook Pro 16" 2019 - i9 - 1TB - 32gb RAM - 5500M Laptop 3 : Alienware 18 - 16gb RAM - 2x GTX 980m => 1070 - Velociraptor MXM => M.2 + 1TB NVME SSD Â Spoiler Alienware M18x R2 - 16gb RAM - 2x AMD 6990 => 2x980m - 512 HDD Alienware M18x R1 (dead) - 16gb AM - 2x GTX 780m - 512 HDD Alienware M17x R2 (red) Alienware M17x R2 (black) Â Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

razor0601 Posted September 20, 2022 Share Posted September 20, 2022 What do you mean with a „hard lock“? Schenker DTR 15(P751TM1) @Dsanke Bios, I7-8700, 32GB 2666MHz RAM, GTX 1060, 15,6“ 4K B156ZAN02.2 Display Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Maxware79 Posted September 20, 2022 Share Posted September 20, 2022 I'm assuming you mean that Windows completely freezes up and you need to do a hard shutdown. Whenever I've had this happen it's been a hardware issue with the GPU, unfortunately. Keep an eye on the GPU temps leading up to the lock Alienware Aurora R15 - i9-13900KF - RTX 4090 - 32GB DDR5 Alienware M18x R2 - i7-3920XM - GTX 970M - 16GB 1866Mhz DDR3L - Samsung 970 Evo with MXM to NVMe Adapter - Custom Delft Blue  Alienware X51 - i7-3770 - NO GPU - 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3  Alienware M17x R3 - i7-2760QM - GTX 580M - 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3 Alienware Area 51 ALX - i7-975 Extreme - GTX 980 - 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3  Alienware Aurora R2 - i7-3770K - GTX 670FTW - 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3 Alienware Aurora R4 ALX - i7-3930K - GTX 1060 - 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3    Alienware Aurora R4 ALX - i7-3930K - GTX 670FTW - 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3  Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Gamer Posted September 21, 2022 Author Share Posted September 21, 2022 I can boot in safe mode, so I guess the driver isn't modded correctly. I'll try again with another one. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
razor0601 Posted September 21, 2022 Share Posted September 21, 2022 I can confirm what maxware said. Mostly it’s the gpu itself when you have this issue. But you can give it another try. Gamer Posted September 21, 2022 Author Share Posted September 21, 2022 I can install a driver with NVCleaninstall, but it doesn't state in GPU-Z it's a 1060 but Nvidia grafics device. Benching the card isn't a problem, but after reboot, lockup again. So card works. https://www.3dmark.com/fs/28412600  When I look up the card with GPU-Z, it's a 1060 mobile and a 1060 Max-Q Need to figure out what's wrong, I guess it thinks it has dual personality 🙂  Just installed the keyboard, so I can easly change between cards, for now.  Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Gamer Posted September 22, 2022 Author Share Posted September 22, 2022 I think this is a driver issue. When I get a black screen in startup and reboot in safe mode I can do a normal startup.  Will try different infs to get this working. Card can even be overclocked 🙂 https://hwbot.org/submission/5083625_gamer_3dmark___fire_strike_geforce_gtx_1060_(mobile)_9921_marks      Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
razor0601 Posted September 22, 2022 Share Posted September 22, 2022 Maybe try an older Nvidia driver and use Section 18 for use with Optimus. 1 Schenker DTR 15(P751TM1) @Dsanke Bios, I7-8700, 32GB 2666MHz RAM, GTX 1060, 15,6“ 4K B156ZAN02.2 Display Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
