Alienware 18 upgrade to 1060, heatsink fits from 880M?

Still have my 8 year old AW18 880m SLI in use for work. 

Bought it new, silly me but still love it!

Wanted to upgrade it a few years ago but not much hardware was available back then except CPU.

Through this forum I had seen the times had changed! 🙂

 

Started with the cpu, upgraded the 4900MQ to an 4940XM just last week and unlocked the bios.

Now I want to upgrade to a 1060 (for now, RTX3000 later).

Got it for € 150, so couldn't let this one go.

 

Does the 880M 100w heatsink fit on the 1060 without hassle?

Or do I need to take out the dremel?

 

I'm an old retired overclocker, but the bug has bit me again 🙂

best to post pics of both the new and old cards, as well as the heatsink. that way we can figure out where it might not fit.

Yes, you have to use your Dremel. Look at the picture. I have marked the area where you have to grind something from the Heatsink. But like jaybee said post more pics from the two cards and the Heatsink.

Nah, with that heatsink you need to dremel the whole middle area in green, hence why people have suggested to use AMD heatsinks :

Got the card working, bought a new AMD heatsink because the original one bends the card to much.

When installing the modded drivers, I get a hard lock in windows.

What's the problem?

What do you mean with a „hard lock“?

I'm assuming you mean that Windows completely freezes up and you need to do a hard shutdown. Whenever I've had this happen it's been a hardware issue with the GPU, unfortunately. 

Keep an eye on the GPU temps leading up to the lock

I can boot in safe mode, so I guess the driver isn't modded correctly.

I can confirm what maxware said. Mostly it’s the gpu itself when you have this issue. But you can give it another try.

I can install a driver with NVCleaninstall, but it doesn't state in GPU-Z it's a 1060 but Nvidia grafics device.

Benching the card isn't a problem, but after reboot, lockup again.
So card works.

When I look up the card with GPU-Z, it's a 1060 mobile and a 1060 Max-Q

Need to figure out what's wrong, I guess it thinks it has dual personality 🙂

 

Just installed the keyboard, so I can easly change between cards, for now.

I think this is a driver issue.

When I get a black screen in startup and reboot in safe mode I can do a normal startup.

 

Will try different infs to get this working.

Card can even be overclocked 🙂

Maybe try an older Nvidia driver and use Section 18 for use with Optimus.

As in this line on the .inf file "%NVIDIA_DEV.1BA0.0551.1028% = Section138, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1BA0&SUBSYS_05511028" this happens to be section 138 but I never thought about changing the sections other than what was already in the .inf. Well if I want to learn something new just stick around here. HAHA!

I had to edit spelt nif inf getting my games mixed up LOL
