  1. I missed all of you too. Outside of the people here, I really don't have anyone to talk shop (tech) with. Some nights, I get the itch to overclock something, but my 14900KS desktop lies dormant. I am sure if I had a big boy GPU, I would have an excuse to do it. And here I thought 3D printers would be a laid-back adventure, haha - far from it. I have my eye on this - Carvera Desktop CNC machine. It's a little pricey, but it is basically three 5090's, 🤣 I want to design and make my own CPU/GPU blocks. Anyway, I'll be around.
  2. What's up everyone! I am sorry I have been away for awhile. I am trying my hand at YT and hopefully build a large enough following to get sponsored by a CNC maker or continue to build my reserve to buy one. I haven't had the urge to upgrade any of my PC's to the latest and greatest (although I am thinking about the 9950X3D). I came across some local listings on a 5090, that weren't exactly deals (used, still above MSRP). The days of great used hardware prices are dead - people want 80 to 110% of their purchase price, and with new cards closing in on their MSRP's, I don't know who is buying used at these prices. I think that if Intel releases the B770 and it's under $400, I'll pounce on that card. I only need something good enough for video editing and CAD. I hope you and your families are doing well. I'm back here fully, doing my normal lurking.
  3. Probably someone who thinks they know better than you and can score a cheap working CPU they can fix. Once they realize they can't, they will either request a refund or commit return fraud against a retailer. While that sounds cynical, I've stopped buying open boxes due to the latter reason.
  4. Yes, I am embarrassed by my storage addiction. I spent several thousand on storage alone over the past year and a half, yet the fastest GPU in all of my rigs is a 4070 Super. LOL, don't judge me 😅. I was intent on replacing all of my 1 and 2TB SSD's with 4TB and even a few 8TB NVMe drives before prices reached where they are now. I ignored common sense and went with drives that had DRAM onboard, even though HMB isn't much of a speed killer if you have a lot of fast RAM. You live and you learn. Although I see @Mr. Fox is slowly succumbing to storage addiction, 🤣
  5. Yes. Right now I am using PETG Pro filament, so it should withstand the temps inside of a case. The designer of these grills, has some plenty cool designs. https://www.printables.com/@kewtd_1153523
  6. Soon, I will likely be offering members of this particular thread free decorative fan grills (all you have to do is pay the shipping). I am currently testing the best materials to use, as some filaments are prone to warping or even melting under temps above 50 to 60C. Here is an example that I like https://www.printables.com/model/562113-skull-fan-grill-120mm I am also designing my own.
  7. The problem is a good amount of reviewers have stated that the MSRP models are essentially a limited-time deal. Most of the cards will go between 750 and 950. I knew the 600 cards were going to disappear quickly but I didn't expect the cards 850 and up to go that fast. I 'may' go to Microcenter though, but I don't really want to drive an hour. We will see.
  8. Welp, that didn't go as planned for me. I guess I am sitting this out as well.
  9. I think this will be one of the rare GPU launches that even with scalpers (they will attempt to buy up the MSRP cards), the chances of picking one up day one will be good. I want to get in before the tariffs truly hit. I thought about going the cheapest route, but I want to ensure I get a card that handle 340W - then I can always undervolt when I don't have the power demands. I plan to use this card almost exclusively in Linux.
  10. I guess I am going to be shopping in the "midrange" and try to pick up a 340W 9070XT around $750ish. Hopefully the card hits at least 3.2Ghz.
  11. This! This is why I stopped buying all of the latest, "best" after Nvidia's 30 series and Intel's 1700 platform. Now my new love is 3D printing - which, as I stated in the past, is like the old era of computing. You have those that build from the ground up, i.e. Voron, to go faster than anything on the market and those that buy ready-to-print devices that don't offer customization. For the first time, in a long time, I have little interest in any new PC component for overclocking. I am just waiting until used 4090's hover around 1000 so I can pick one up for my CAD/Bender work.
  12. I know I am late to the game, but with the 5090 being 2000 and the 5080 being as gimped as it is, I am probably going to buy a 4090 for CAD/3D modeling purposes if I can get one under $1000. Nvidia gave themselves away, with a 5080 TI being a sure thing.
  13. I still have several X299 mobos, so I'm trying to get CPUs for them. I checked prices for the 10980XE and they are still going for 400 to 600 bucks. Insane! If they were 200 or less, I'd buy three, but I guess I'll wait. It seems a lot of these CPUs are already delidded. I am not sure if I want to trust some random guy's delidding skills.
  14. 3D Printing is akin to overclocking PCs. Let me explain. Like all of us in this thread, overclocking is the sport. Pushing hardware past its intended limits. Even if we are never going to use that redline performance for practical use cases. Then there are some that go beyond traditional overclocking and step into the realm of sub-ambient overclocking. Both groups are represented in the world of 3D printing. These are the folks who care less about the end output (actual 3D prints) and more about building and modding the 3D printers themselves. Most take extreme pride in building the DIY 3D printers with significant hardware mods. You can easily spend over 10K on some of these machines. Software wise...it looks like a lot of these software companies took a page out of the Asus BIOS book and I am only talking about the slicer applications. If you want complete software control over your custom 3D printer, the creative knobs are certainly there. The 3D printer manufacturers are similar to computing companies. Prusa is akin to the Intel of old. One of the originators of 3D printers. Reliable (for the most part) 3D printers that allow total customizability and modding. Although, they have been stagnant while smaller 3D printer manufacturers have been eating their lunch lately. Creality is AMD of old in many ways. Offering lots of budget machines that require extensive rework by the end user to get working reliably, although they have some killer options that will match some of the competition at a much lower cost. Finally, there is Bambu Labs which is essentially, a mix of Apple/Nvidia. BL 3D printers just work out of box and are known to be very reliable...at the cost of being stuck in a proprietary walled garden. There are still third-party companies creating hardware modifications, but nothing like Prusa's ecosystem. I have entered a rabbit hole that I can see myself becoming increasingly addicted to exploring. Printing and holding your first 3DBenchy is a wonderful feeling. EDIT: The 3DBenchy is a benchmark for 3D printers.
  15. Building out a 3D print farm, starting with the Bambu Labs P1S. My only concern is that many of the reviews on Bambu Labs products compare the company to Apple...it just works but modding is out the window. My initial goal is to design and print custom parts for PCs. My ultimate goal is to have a CNC machine. I have to keep telling myself to start small, hahaha. I am also going to write a review for this product, stay tuned for that. If this endeavor ends up like I think it will, if any of you ever need a custom piece printed, let me know and I'll just charge the cost of materials.
  16. Does this mean I am on a special team, RGB (AMD, Nvidia and Intel for CPUs/GPUs)? 🤣😂 EDIT: With @Mr. Fox and @Talon currently visiting team Red, my question is when will @Papusan take the plunge? These are some strange times, next thing I know @ryan would be joining the desktop crew as well.
  17. I agree to an extent. My problem stems from owning several 3090's, thinking it would remain the top dog (even after the release of the 3080 Ti made it less relevant). Then Nvidia released the 3090 Ti (those owners didn't even get a full year before the 4090 came out) as a greedy slap to all 3090 owners. That is why I completely avoided the 40 series up, until the past month when I purchased a used 4070 Super at a really good price. If Nvidia does this again, I will stop buying Nvidia products. I will not care how performant their cards are in the future.
  18. I am in a wait and see mode. The more I've researched W790, the more I see that Intel simply slapped "overclocking" as an afterthought. So I am not enthusiastic that Intel will fix its approach with W890. As for AMD, I will give the 9950X3D a cursory lookover but I am not bullish on it either. The saving grace for that CPU is that I have a mobo available that will work with it, otherwise I am going to stick with the 7600X for longer. The only thing I can look forward to hopefully is the 5090. Hopefully, Nvidia doesn't release a 5090 TI this generation or I am going to be seriously pissed.
  19. So it's Ryzen first gen all over again. Instead of AMD competing with the 6950X/7980XE, it's Intel's turn to compete with the 13900K/14900K? The true end of an era.
  20. I believe I am getting the Z890 + CPU, however, I want to make sure 1851 will have at least two generations. The on and off rumor of it being limited to one generation is worrying me.
  21. Outside of the idiotic Intel protections, my doubts about the 285K and the 1851 as a whole have tempered a bit. I think Intel allowing the E cores to potentially overclock like crazy is the saving grace. I am very intrigued about this platform now. EDIT: Guys, I think we need to relax. OC'ing isn't dead, at least not for guys like us. We will still be able to extract more performance out of these chips and some of the "guardrails" will be removed when Intel realizes people aren't happy. In Jay's video, you noticed he said DLVR Bypass isn't available at launch. That means Intel is likely taking a wait and see approach. Give it some time and I say, wait for the reviews.
  22. Good. You can finish what I was going to do. I had the CPU (twice even) but couldn't get a mobo that wasn't outrageously priced. I still want one, but I'll probably settle on a W790 setup. I am in love with Proxmox, and my goal is to consolidate my home lab servers into one and then virtualize everything.
  23. LOL. That is the one thing I have not spent money on...a gaming chair. I still use an old wooden chair that I believe is from the 70's. The one chair I had my eye on for the past four years is the HarmanMiller Aeron Chair that I keep hearing is amazing but my wife would kill me if she found out I paid over $1000 for one. I also heard you can get them used for 300 to 500, but I never see them for that price locally.
  24. https://www.reuters.com/technology/qualcomm-has-explored-acquiring-pieces-intel-chip-design-business-sources-say-2024-09-06/ I've been saying, without fanboyism tones or malice, but Intel as we knew it... Is going to disappear. It's mostly self inflicted. Other companies are circling Intel like hungry sharks. AMD fanboys are lavishing in all of this news but AMD isn't as bulletproof as they think they are.
