Finally the new RTX MXM cards will work in our laptops!
Nizmeïster replied to SuperMG's topic in Components & Upgrades
Hi, for the RTX A5500, have you tried different drivers? Have you also tried different IDs from the NvCleanInstall list? I noticed that sometimes selecting a different ID from the list could fix power throttling or performance drop issues. I had a similar problem on a GT60 with a Quadro RTX 3000. The GPU was experiencing power reduction, and I managed to fix it by choosing a different Quadro RTX 3000 hardware ID from the list. It might be worth a try. Also, make sure you're using the Quadro driver rather than a modified Game Ready driver. -
Well, I’ve started diving into a small project to completely refurbish a GT60 that I repaired some time ago and that was honestly in terrible condition. It’s an Ivy Bridge 16F3 model, currently equipped with an i7-3920XM / 32 GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 at 1866 MHz / GTX 1060 6 GB / 2x500 GB mSATA SSDs plus an additional 500 GB SATA SSD. I’m planning to try either a Quadro A4000 or A3000 in it depending on my budget. The first issue will obviously be the use of a custom heatsink. I asked Chichen to join the project and he’s really into it, so he’s currently studying a possible solution. While we’re at it, we’re also going to improve the cooling system for the i7-3920XM to try and achieve a decent overclock on it. I also ordered a higher-quality TN panel to replace the stock LG display, which had a few dark spots. I chose a B156HW01 V7, which is one of the best 40-pin LVDS panels available. I don’t know if better options exist, or even whether LVDS/eDP converters would properly work to get an IPS panel, so I’d rather stick with a plug-and-play solution. The laptop will use a 240W power supply and is also running a custom unlocked BIOS and custom EC firmware by Svet from MSI. So now we’ll see whether a Quadro A4000 can perform better than RTX 4060 or 4070 mods. I just need to find the money to fund one by selling a few things first!

On the GT60, the MXM slot is located at the edge of the chassis, preventing larger cards from fitting. The depth is also a tight fit, down to the millimeter, because of the entire mSATA card assembly. It's not a matter of the GPU's orientation; it's simply a matter of the MXM connector's placement, with a reserved space that's precisely sized for the MXM B 3.0 standard. If the card is too wide, it will be blocked by the chassis; if it's too deep, it won't fit because of the mSATA RAID card.

Sliderfra told me that HP cards don’t fit in the GT60. Apparently, HP Quadro RTX 3000 cards simply cannot fit inside.

It seems that HP cards can cause issues on the GT60. They’re slightly wider and apparently don’t fit properly in the chassis. That’s what I’ve been told, but I’ve never checked it myself.

Anyway, if the Quadro RTX 3000 works on the GT60, then logically the Quadro RTX 4000 should work as well. And I think the whole Turing family should work fine too, since in the end it’s a generation that’s fairly close to Pascal. But the problem is actually finding these Turing Quadro RTX cards — it’s almost impossible. The 3000 is already very hard to find, but a 4000 or 5000 feels like an impossible mission, I think. As for the 4060/4070, yes, the stock heatsink is enough with a few modifications so the VRMs fit properly. I did it on the GT60 Haswell I used to have. No issues either getting the card recognized with the drivers. The only remaining issues were the EC Panic Mode and the video outputs that needed fixing. But I couldn’t test any further because I quickly switched over to the Precision 7720 that I found brand new for 300 euros...

Hi, do you know what the difference is in terms of mounting holes and GPU position between the A4000 and an RTX 4070, for example?

Bon! Did Chichen make the heatsink? Can't wait to see how these cards perform! -
Specifically for the GT60s, aside from the extremely rare models with 3K or 4K IPS screens, you have no choice but to use Optimus because all the other versions are LVDS. That said, the Quadro RTX 3000 works very well with Optimus, for example. I think a Quadro RTX 5000 could do the same with a mod to the heatsink. The RTX 4060 was properly routed with Optimus, and gaming performance was very good — the gain compared to the Quadro RTX 3000 was huge despite the CPU bottleneck. Honestly, if we could just fix this video output issue, and apparently the EC could be manually modified for the fans, then we might not be far from also getting these cards to work properly on older MSI GT60/70 models. I think on the GT72 and later models, it should work with the eDP mod though.
-
In that case, I don’t really understand what’s preventing at least the video outputs from working. Maybe it has something to do with the routing through Optimus. The only GT60 with eDP is the one with the 3K or 4K IPS display, the 16F4 version 3.0 motherboard model. Maybe on that one, with the eDP backlight mod, everything would work properly.

When I mentioned the fans, it’s actually an EC firmware issue that likely doesn’t properly detect the 4060, probably due to an incorrect temperature sensor report over SMBus. But to me, the biggest issue still remains external display support...

After selling my GT60 Haswell 16F4 V 1.1, I’m still going to get back into a few experiments with a 16F3 that I managed to repair. For now, it’s running an i7-3920XM / 32GB HyperX 1866 MHz / GTX 1060. I’d like to manage to install something in it that performs better than a Quadro RTX 3000 maybe a Quadro RTX 5000? But these cards seem impossible to find now, or out of stock... I might consider an RTX 3060, but I assume that hasn’t been tested yet. The 4060 could work in the GT60 16F4, with the known fan issues and no external display output. Maybe the Ampere models could work better...
-
Do you think it might work better than the regular 4060? Although, admittedly, there might not be the temperature sensor issue with that one.

I already have the cable for the backlighting. I have the 4060, which will be perfect in the Precision 7720. I had tested the 4060 in an MSI GT60 before, but unfortunately, even though the card worked very well, the EC (Electromagnetic Computing) would go into panic mode with the fans running at full speed, and there was also a problem with the DisplayPort and HDMI outputs, which was a deal-breaker for me. So I wanted to see if a solution like the A3000 would work better on those models, or failing that, a 3060 or 3070. If it works on the 17 R4, maybe it would work on the MSI too. -

And your 3080 isn't too bottlenecked by the processor? I still have a GT60 running Ivy Bridge that I just repaired. I might consider a Quadro A3000, for example, or even an A4000, we'll see... I also still have a Precision 7720 where I need to put a 4060, but I need to check something about the backlight mod.
