  1. Yeah the GT77 dimensions are quite strange. They made it thinner but kept the depth. I think it would be easier to manage if it were thicker instead, but less deep. But I always use external monitors so am not bothered by the screen size. Yep the latest CPUs are much more impressive than the GPUs. If you'd have said we'd have 24C/32T CPUs in laptops a few years ago I wouldn't have believed it. For your GPU, the 16GB 4090 is looking like the only real upgrade from a 16GB 3080 Ti. Even then I don't know how much faster it will be. This upcoming generation of laptop GPUs is the worst I can remember.
  2. I've never had problems with them before, but this issue with the 990 and their response is a worry. I usually buy them because I know they've been reliable in the past, but performance wise there are lots of other options these days. My only semi-regret is not going 64GB RAM, but the price on 2x16GB sticks at 3200 was so good, would have costed a lot to go to 64GB even at 2666. But I can do that myself in the future.
  3. Thanks. I think I'll start with Win 10 and the default drivers and see how it's working. I expect I'll get a newer BIOS and EC firmware anyway.
  4. Glad to hear it. I don't hate W11 but prefer W10 overall (except for the constant nagging). What version of CCC are you running? I might try replicate seeing as you've had no issues. Thanks! Am excited - it is now in production and due for dispatch early next week. Metabox have been really good in the past so glad to support them again. Config (currency is AUD):
  5. Hi all, I've ordered a KM-G. My MSI died a few weeks ago (turned off and wouldn't turn back on). No replacements available while still in warranty so managed to get a full refund instead of store credit after heckling them. Was on the fence about the KM-G but decided to jump in while my local reseller still has stock (after having basically zero stock for all of 2022...). While it's being assembled, I've been doing some research and have some questions: Any advantages/disadvantages to using W10 or W11? Any driver issues with either or does it not matter? The latest driver pack from my reseller is outdated (CCC 3.55 and so on). Is it worth grabbing XMG or another resellers' drivers instead or are newer drivers not needed? I just care about stability given some of the complaints I've read here and NBR over the years Thanks and am glad I decided to go for it before they're gone forever. I was just reading on the XMG subreddit that the new 'XMG Ultra' will be BGA.
  6. Microsoft documentation (quite in-depth) on modern standby. It's been around a while but it needs hardware (including BIOS) support. It replaces S3 Sleep with S0 low power idle. I only ran into this with my GT77 as it's the first hardware I've owned that ships with it. Basically what happens once you hit sleep is: 1. Screen off, W11 starts preparing for Sleep. This apparently includes maintenance tasks etc 2. Between 1 second to a few minutes later, laptop goes into low power idle. Fans stop, but CPU is sipping a watt or two (I measured). Occasionally the CPU wakes up (every few minutes) briefly to 'check for things to do' 3. A few hours later it enters hibernate. Apparently it can go back to S0 low power idle from here, but I haven't seen it do it after 1-2 days. I used the SleepStudy tool in W11 to verify it is staying in hibernate My laptop is always connected to AC so I don't really care, but if you were on battery this could be annoying. There is no way to disable this without completely reinstalling W11 with S3 Sleep enabled. Some laptops will no longer support S3 Sleep on a hardware level. Hopefully this helps some people, I was confused when I first slept the machine and it didn't actually sleep right away.

    MSI GT77

Here. GT77 and some others are no longer available, it was priced at $AU6299, while 32GB models are still $AU7899. Other MSI laptops heavily discounted as well. The main reason was better cooling but more potential for future storage and memory expansion were nice. The premium on the GT77 may not be worth paying for most though which is fair. I was a bit worried about it being slimmer than the GT76 but I actually find the GT76 to be louder, and the GPU temperatures on the GT76 are worse. It does amazing job cooling the 9900K though. Overall the GT77 is way faster, it is very noticeable. The only thing I don't like is the 75W CPU power cap when the 3080 Ti is in use which limits the P-cores to 4.4-4.5GHz from what I can tell. It is still easily outperforming my old 9900K though.

    MSI GT77

I purchased the top end GT77 last week and the GT76 is now on server duty, as it was heavily discounted along with every other MSI gaming laptop. Not sure if this means Raptor Lake laptops are on their way. I need more than 32GB RAM but moreso needed the VRAM which was constantly maxed out on my 2080. So I was looking at 16GB 3080's or 3080Ti's. Anyway I was also eyeing the X170KM-G as well but the issues I saw were 1) Alder Lake is a lot faster than Rocket Lake. 2) The KM-G platform seems really unstable. It is easy to find complaints about it and it seems to be Intel's fault. 3) I also don't have access to Prema BIOS here, and the MSI BIOs is better than the stock Clevo one. The 3080 is about as fast as the 3080Ti in the GT77 so that didn't bother me. The above points, plus the discount (it was literally 25% off) made the the choice easy for me. What BIOS are you on and have you updated? I'm on 107 and MSI Center at least had the decency to let me not install. I haven't noticed any weird behavior so wasn't keen.
  9. The NH57AF1 had a bit over an hour on battery but yes that's the extreme end. I have a colleague with one he brings to work and it won't survive a Zoom call without AC power. Agree RE lighting. I disabled the light bars on my MSI on first boot (thankfully could be done through software) and they haven't been on since. I don't even know if they work properly.
  10. You don't have to go through Steam/Proton. Wine-GE through Lutris is another solution and will feel less hacky. If it's a Steam game, Proton is perfect though.
  11. Not everyone has the means, but I think it's a good idea to keep personal/gaming stuff and more work oriented stuff on separate devices anyway. Size, weight, and battery life are to compromised in DTRs, but you also avoid the OS clutter that can slow everything down. Plus I think different operating systems just do different jobs better. There's dual boot obviously but you still have the physical issues with DTRs.
  12. 130W is nothing out of the ordinary for that CPU and it can pull significantly more. Both the CPU and laptop can handle it.
