  1. Sad, but you are probably right:( I wish mxm had become a broader standard and the cards weren't so damn rare. A rare card plus 100+usd cooler is not something I can afford, but it is cool to know that solutions exist to bring these laptops forward, hopefully until the 9900k becomes totally obsolete. For now, in terms of the power limit, the old driver wouldn't work great for new games, plus most of my use of the computer is on Linux where I have no idea how the power limit thing works. It may be dumb, but would putting a higher value shunt in place of the default one be an acceptable way to bring the power limit down a bit? Is there a vbios that would lower it? can the stock vbios be modded for a lower limit? As much as I like the idea of crazy stationary watercooling or mods that stick out the bottom of the case, this laptop needs to be portable enouugh to take to classes and durable enough to get tossed around on unpaved highways washboards without a fragile mod breaking or a fitting leaking fluid everywhere. They are annoying contstraints to work within when a solution to all my problems may well be cutting the bottom off and directing a 120mm fan into the base of the laptop, but I do still have to use this laptop for things
  2. That's sad, I would have thought people would still be interested in bios mods and stuff even for the newer less-upgradable laptops I still find the p775dm3 to be pretty usable for modern stuff Mine now has a 9th gen CPU and 20 series GPU, sounds like it could be brought up so far as 40 series at least Perhaps Framework and the open standard for their PCIe bay will bring back some kind of modding. Would be cool if Framework went about making a DTR
  3. Interesting, all the functions work? any issues with some of the dp or hdmi ports? internal screen control? Did you make your own heatsink or did you source one from somewhere? This is not something I would be able to afford any time soon, but I will keep it in mind if the 40 series mxm ever becomes cheap and discarded.
  4. Are you referring to the whole forum or just the discussion of Clevo modding and stuff? I know Clevo has stopped making the crazy dtr type laptops:(
  5. It may, but I don't have one of those. I got the 2080 super at a very good price but don't exactly have the funds to go buying newer cards. Plus, the 4070 mxm is a different shape and does not have the clevo power connector, so it would likley be a chore to fit into the laptop. I think anything newer than the 20 series also requires an updated cooler because of hole spacing differences. The dram chips are fine, the spacing is similar enough to the old 10 series card that I could just reuse the thermal pads with slight adjustments to spacing and make fine contact with all of them, the vrm is the main thing I am worried about. Old nvidia driver is an interesting idea, I never knew that the powerlimit setting was not intended. Seems rather stupid to lock useful functionality for no reason.
  6. I upgraded my p775dm3 to a 2080 super, and it all works OK; however the modifications I had to do to the cooler and unholy stacks of thermal pads I had to make to get contact with the VRM makes me weary of the 200w power limit of the card, I also notice that the system does experience a hard shutoff if I run a GPU stress test for an extended period of time. (I assume the VRM is having a thermal limit trip). MSI afterburner and similar linux utilities do not seem to know much about the card, and I am not able to lower the power limit in them. (I did have to do the inf mod for Windows drivers and I am on Wayland in Linux, so perhaps it is just a coincidence and both of those two are actually causing the issue). I know it may sound stupid, but I am pretty worried about the VRMs overheating and/or the card drawing too much power from the laptop not desiged for it, so I would like to find a way to lower the power limit maybe to 180w or 150w. Anybody have a VBIOS for the clevo 2080 super with a reduced power limit? Secondly, I am a bit confused about BIOSs for this laptop, as I understand there are some BIOSs that change the ID such that the inf mod is not needed on Windows. Currently, the laptop has an older version of Dsanke bios (had it when I got it), probably pre-rtx. For a daily-driver, would it be better to update to the latest dsanke version (maybe one with rtx support) or to go with a Prema bios? What is considered to be the 'best' bios for performance option unlocking as well as daily stability and full functionality?
  7. Hello, I picked up an old p775dm3 to be my daily-driver mobile workstation a while back. I have been doing some upgrades, maintenance, and mods and got to the point where I need to ask some questions about vbios power limits and things, seemed like this place is where discussions of that sort occur, so I made an account. Looking forward to being here and continuing my upgrade adventures.
