About the backlight mod specifically, though maybe there are multiple issues and I'm mixing them up. I'm specifically interested in the Radeon E8950, which is an embedded card. With switchable graphics off, it successfully outputs video to a Precision M6800's eDP screen, but doesn't activate the backlight. Ergo, I get a display, but I don't get a backlight to see it with. Do the newer RTX cards not even manage to display to the screen, or am I misinterpreting that and my backlight issue is identical to theirs? This is my first foray into anything MXM related so I'm still figuring out the landscape. My question in this situation was whether the cards don't activate the backlight because their BIOSes just aren't programmed to do so, or if it doesn't activate because the electrical connections don't exist so even if the BIOS wanted to activate the light, it couldn't. Which I think you just answered - it's a hardware issue because these are server cards that lack the backlight circuitry.

I've read through both threads, and I understand that the issue happens because these cards are not outputting voltage on the pins that the cable mod supplants, but is this because the cards are physically lacking the hardware to do so or because the BIOSes don't support operating the backlight and thus don't activate the pins? Ergo, flashing a different BIOS wouldn't solve this problem because the circuits to drive those pins is just not there?

I don't suppose anyone has tested this with AMD cards yet? I believe I've run into the same issue with a Radeon E8950 in a Precision M6800. The eDP screen displays the desktop, but the backlight never illuminates. An unfortunate final hurdle after the last two months of research and fabrication to get this far with it. I suppose it makes sense because this particular E8950 was meant for servers where it would never need to activate a backlight. Its datasheet has so far been unobtanium, but I would assume the pins are electrically identical since the cards all have to adhere to the MXM pinout.
