And that was a essentially a sale, since you purchased previous gen hardware. $4500 spent on a desktop a month ago would yield 2-3x the GPU power (and more VRAM) and roughly 2x the CPU power, not to mention the improvements in the RAM department. Yes, if you absolutely need a laptop or just love them, then you spend what you have to spend, and time your purchases as best you can - just highlighting the ridiculous absence of value there compared to desktops.

OK, even assuming some ridiculous markup of 100% over retail, how much can you shave off that price? 1500 (and I doubt that)? At $/E 5100 it would still hardly be a sensible purchase for most people, plus then you have to add the cost of purchasing your own 3rd party storage and RAM.

It's good security practice to set pernissions on per directory basis. Only root user will have permissions to the relative root of the filesystem, so you have to use sudo command to create a directory on the drive and give yourself ownership and permissions to use it: cd to the root of the mounted drive sudo mkdir games sudo chown reciever games sudo chmod u+rwx games There might be a way to mount the filesystem such that to grant your user ownership too. You can probably achieve the above using some GUI file managers, as long as you are clear on the concept of *nix file ownership and permissions (user/group/others). HTH

For most people, none of this is of any concern as most people are not PC enthusiasts, power users, and consequently they don't buy gaming/power laptops. @serpro69 's wiife needs a machine for data science, and as the name implies, this often involves dealing with a lot of data, thus RAM capacity and performance tends to come into play more so than in many other domains. More generally, getting a system to utilise more than 16GB of RAM is quite straightforward, especially for people who use the devices for work, and clearly the halved RAM bandwidth past 16GB and suboptimal performance overall are not ideal. I wouldn't touch that product. Of the two evils, better to get a machine with 32GB dual channel soldered, or obviously just with two SODIMMs. Unfortunately laptops rarely support more than 2 SODIMMs or 32GB of RAM, so once memory requirements reach that barrier it will be time to drop $6k on a Precision, or swap a 2kg laptop for a 20kg workstation :)

That doesn't make much sense to me. DirectX is primarily a gaming API. Linux relies primarily on the professional API OpenGL, with things like Vulkan growing in popularity. Even if we are talking about hardcore application in games, I don't recall seeing a huge difference in performance when running say Heaven Benchmark in DX and GL modes (it supports both). Also, in my experience. Application GUIs are noticeably more responsive when running on Linux as opposed than Windows, and on some Linux distros you can expect to see up to ca. 30% more CPU performance from the same software running on Linux (not to mention the difference in I/O performance). Maybe you have a link to one of those videos of reference? You know, if you formulate virtually any thesis, there will be a video on YT to support it for you. If I were to do any serious photo work, my primary concern would be the lack of native Photoshop - not sure if and how well that would run on Wine, or whether any truly competitive alternatives exist (Gimp more than covers my current modest requirements, although I did some studio-level Photoshop work a while back and knew the software inside-out then). Things look better on the video editing side, e.g. there is a Linux version of Davinci Resolve. I really like the feel of Manjaro, probably one of the most fun distros to use, unfortunately in my testing about 6 months ago, it turned out to be one of the slowest, possibly due to all the cool bells and whistles, or there was an issue with Alder Lake support (although the kernel was as recent as would be expected from an Arch derivative).

One interesting thing I noticed about G.Skill RAM, other than it running on high voltage (I guess liquid cooling would be good there!) is that they show low CL, but then the other timings are markedly higher. Yeah, the robust RAM support was one of the many selling points for me, as it was clear that getting a 4xDDR5 DIMM config to work faster than 4000 or 4400 MHz could be a challenge. MSI's RAM compatibility list looked more impressive than those of comparable Asus, GB and AsRock boards. I would say that MSI delivered somewhat well on that front, with no issues in general. Some of those top-end boards were out of the races for me based on feature gaps, such as all the 2-DIMM ones (although such boards are not unreasonable for most people, given the current performance penalty involved in using 4 DDR5 sticks).
