I don’t remember about pascal but for sure RTX 2000 series and newer throttle
You have an 18 right ? If so try what he's suggesting with the bios settings . Maybe it would work

I have the exact same question. I believe the unlocked Bios would be the answer to the 18s throttling problem.
What CPU did you use? I want to go for an MX one, but I believe the extra power load might make the system throttle.
I7 4930 mx . 4.2 ghz same CPU that's in my viking ( 18 r1?) no throttling from it .

I have an Alienware 17 r1 with a 4710qm and a PNY RTX 3000. It doesn't throttle. I initially didn't have throttle and I manage to recreate and get rid of it by messing with the advanced settings (unlocked bios) regarding the PEG GPU. Optimus is enabled. Have a look at my post here in the Alienware 17 section with the title "Alienware 17 R1 Fan issue".

You know what I had a ranger just like yours with an Quadro rtx 4000 from adelink . Never had throttling and I remembered looking at your post about the ranger ( 17 r1 ) and set mine exactly like yours . Just in case since I read about the throttling . So I wonder if that works with the 18 since they essentially share an ec and bios just a few extras do to multi GPU now I regret selling the ranger .........

I'm still curious if anyone with stock 980m SLI or 970m SLI motherboard has tested newer GPUS.
It's a shame we can't use these newer cards in the haswell laptops
My old p4000 was 100 watt ( oc bios ) and never throttled . So hmmm unless Pascal isn't the cards that drop to 55watt

So I can try to test my Alienware shipped with dual 970s in sli . Only issue is money . Lol 😂 but my Alienware is the newer revision

As you'll be cuffed with 2 RAM sticks DDR3, there's no point. Rather go for 4930mx & 32GB RAM. Igpu is not needed anyway on that kind of laptop.
That's true . Sadly though with the 18 not having edp and relies on a mux having faster igpu helps with general os gui elements . Had a Alienware 17 r2 with the 4980hq . The one with all the msata slots instead of the MXM shd it felt snappier then my old ranger with 4930 mx or my 18 at 4.3 . That's just me though . I'm still curious how hard it would be to get the mutant version working or above 4g decoding working on these

I would be surprised if you can "feel" the "IPC" difference between a 4930MX/4940MX vs 4980HQ. A 4930MX OC to 4.3Ghz without any additional voltage. It can hit 4.5Ghz easily.
4980HQ is nice for Optimus since it has the extra cache but won't make a significant difference.
I'd rather have OC 4930MX with 1866-2133Mhz RAM (32GB) vs 4980HQ with 16gb ram.
Take it from someone who owns 10 laptops from Core 2 Quad to Ultra 9 275HX. 😁
I have about the same . I've seen comparations with the 4989hw and ryzen 4500 check it out on YouTube it's crazy hue that l4 cache boosts things .

I think his card has no power cable so it can support up to 200w.
Probably that would make sense so he'd be limited

For the Alienware 18 R1, Any new cards will power throttle to 55W if the card is rated more than 80W of TDP. Even if you do a resistor mod, it won't work.
Hmm interesting to know . Still though it be basically a max q then lol

Not sure if I am missing anything but a 4930MX or 4940MX will provide much better performance when overclocked.
You can hit 4Ghz all day without any additional voltage. 4.3Ghz should be easy to obtain and cool.
I guess the biggest advantage is the Iris iGPU but if you're losing one memory channel it;s already not worth it to me.
If you provide me the microcode I can try updating the BIOS for you but be sure you have a programmer and backup your original BIOS.
The 4980hq has better ipc do to the 128mb l4 cache the igpu is also as fast as a gt 740 . So at least for the os elements it will feel smoother and more responsive . The only thing is if you plan to use more then two ram slots I think you need to have single rank dimms similar to the QTJ1 on the clevo p870

The only thing is it won't allow ocing even with unlocked CPU . Where as one version I had fir win 7 did support it

Hello. My RTX 3080 got fixed so everything is fine. (The IC was glitching due to a short-circuit caused by a screw).
Compatibility:
The RTX 3060 12GB works fine on laptops with Optimus (intel HD + NVIDIA) or laptops with dual MXM slots (NVIDIA + NVIDIA) with some vbios.
You need to modify your heatsink to make the core fit perfectly onto the copper middle part of your heatsink. There's like an offset of 9mm to the right.
The 3060/3080 don't have eDP output for internal displays.
Performance:
It's a 80W card and it performes like a 80-95W one.
I know this is kind of old but I'm looking at the 3060 12gb . Fur the Alienware 18 r1 viking. So that card *should work * ? Without to much fuss aside from unlocked bios to enable SG mode ? Also if you want more power for your GPU then you need to resister mod your Alienware 18 . However the 330 watt psu is the ultimate bottleneck the GPU will happily pull as much power as it needs but it will drop power do to the psu and also drain battery . So limit games to 60 fps if you can

hi, my rx480 is not detected in my AW17 R1 either, but works in m17x R4 though. Figures...
It has to do with his the system can't read the temp sensors . Since haswrll systems and above . (Clevo p870) Support MXM upgrades both them require detecting temp sensor . There ... Might be a way to bypass it but I haven't figured it out . I've tried a 480 with modded bios . Modded vbios . Nothing worked . The 480 is now in an old iMac 2011

I plan on doing this with my Alienware 18 r1 viking . I don't think I need duet but if so I can make a tiny partition on an msata drive for it while still having 99 percent of the drives capacity available to use .

I wonder if the 990 Pro cooler will fit completely into the M18xR2 slot? I'm afraid the heatsink part will be too high.
It might not but .... You can by a thin copper on online that replaced it . Should be sufficient as your only getting gen 3 speeds so it won't stress the controller much .

You are lucky.
it took a lot of tweaking and im still not done i now have the ram at 3200 as i got single rank dimms and now its nice .

Now I will add is it could be your cpus Imc that is having issues with the faster ram . I can say the 4700mq throws fits with anything above 1866 but the 4930 4940 should be able to take up to even 2400 with little issue unless the CPU was cooked to death and degraded

My Alienware 18 let's me mess with it's bios fine . I usually go in and enable the overrides for long duration power and short and then set to 1024 on both which pretty much is unlimited lol my 4930mx is at 4.2ghz 1 240 volts . Ahd yes the aw18 can use up to 2133 ddr3l ram . 1866 works just fine to . I've ran both in mine but sadly one of my hyper x sticks farted out so now I'm at 1600 cl7 . I am going to go back to 2133 MHz as there is a noticable difference. Another thing I'd want to try is the 4980hq the chip with iris igpu and 128mb l4

I have not yet. I thought about there are three solution.
1. Cut off the bracket screw to the correct height and hope there is enough thread.
I do not want to do that.
2. Put something under the bracket to lower the screw height on the other side.
There is maybe not enough room beetwen the bracket and frame at the keyboard. Also you need longer bracket holder screws.
3. Make a new bracket holder out of isolation plate.
I will try this but still waiting for parts to arrive.
Cool looking forward to your findings 🙂

I am going to do the tm1 heatsink mod to aid in cooling as this chip is spicy . At full 4.8 ghz with 5.3 single core turbo .

But if all QTJ1 can support 3200mhz then we can say that’s a great upgrade
The ones without ihs are usually the weaker ones . The ones that have the caps on the bottom tend to have better memory controllers . They are also picky in ram . Dual rank dimms are hit and miss . Mine is running. 40gb at 3000 MHz ram . Once I went to single rank dimms . ( Yes you lose like 3 percent performance going from dual rank to single rank dimms but ) You won't notice it . Furthermore as long as you are in dual channel you are fine . Also to others, having all 4 rams slots filled will make it harder to get faster speeds . These chips usually work with 2 ram slots . So there is that . If I take out two sticks are drop to 16gb I can hit 3200 but 16gb isn't enough for gaming these days really .

Weird I've seen people in other threads state the 3060m supports lvds . As well as some 6600xts and 6850xts . The 6850 can be pulled from the weird external GPU for the rog ally . But if that's incorrect then shucks . One thing I'd find interesting would be to use one of the pin soldered 4980hqs . Sure you'd be limited to 2 slots for ram * I think * but the iris graphics would be miles ahead of the hd 4600 plus the 128mb cache is great . There are benchmarks online showing the performance . At any rate I'm going to order a 3060m or 6600xt soon . Probably 3060 do to vram

you should flash dell vbios for m4000m, as it will enable PEG mode that does not work with HP vbios
This . When I had a m5000 I had to flash the Dell bios
Alienware 18 R1 - RTX A3000 12GB MXM
in Alienware 18 and M18x

When I'm trying to go nuts lol I just use speed fan to manually set fan speeds . As long as you tick dell ec options in soeedfan you can control the fan rpm
