I got a Xeon E-2286M QS and I'll undervolt it.
The seller said he can't modify "the bios".
Where can I get the latest bios for it? P870KM.
I found one online for 9900KS 128GB
Thanks.
the one that says 9900ks 128gb me disabled should be the one to go for however . i think the regular one works too

Someone posted A14+ for AW18 on the NBR forums but I don't seem to have it saved.
I wonder if @Reciever may have a copy? But he also had the Ranger 17 R1 not the 18 so maybe not.
Would be nice . Not sure what it would add . Maybe just a microcode update but still

I used the BIOS from this post
I hope you both are not referring to AW 18 R1?
Ahhhhh you are referring to the ranger . I know there is a dell a14 bios fur the 18 but never saw an unlocked

It might be a bug related to Bios. If I set mine to SG, I get 8 beeps no matter the settings.
I have a 880m, I might get into more testing when my 4930xm arrives.
If you are on a14+ maybe there is a way to dump the bios ? Idk if that requires a flash programmer or just the sleep bug

Weird I matched all settings but still no dGPU showing up in IGFX mode
maybe it’s because I’m on a12. I know there was a A14+ made on NBR forums but I never saved it
I'm actually after the a14+ bios I can't find it any where

I did the cut too and decided not to make a new bracket. I always wanted to keep original parts but not in this case. It would have been a lot of work and this one only take an afternoon.
So you have to cut 4mm from the original bracket you should have enough tread to use it properly.
I used a drill with a milling bit.
And cut the frame to fitt the extra radiator.
It is a worthy mod I think this cooling is superior than the old one.
The next step will be the second fan mod.
Yeah kind of hard without a drill / cutting press or machine tool lol .

I think we need to see more settings from your bios such as the pcie settings as well. Might be useful to post a bunch of pics from your bios (relevant ones of course).
AW17 R1/AW18 use the same platform so they should behave almost identically with LVDS display
Agreed . I also wish I could rest a newer GPU on my aw 18 . It had two 970s in sli and shipped with the 4930mx . So that makes me wonder if it would throttle any newer card but good lord bills are tight . I'd be chill if someone sent me there card of test it . Report back and send it back to them

you will still have problems with fan control, at the least
In my mind, this is the less problematic option
We can use speedfan . At least with the haswell based models like the ranger ( 17r1) and viking (18 r1)

Hi,
Clevo card won't post, as it needs additional voltage that is not in the standard MXM. You will burn the card if you don't mod the mxm connector, and most probably your mxm slot as well.
@Khenglish did a mod a few years ago on his Clevo P150 IIRC, but that was quite complicated to do...
It was well documented on NBR back in the days, and can possibly be recovered on the archives:
Ahh figured .

Also I have a GTX 1060 clevo card . It requires separate power ? Is there a way to run that power ? Someone mentioned doing so from the rapter nvme card ?

Tried this in AW 18 but doesn’t work. When you select iGFX it turns off dGPU.
Oh that's annoying . So from what I read the rx 6600 has issues and the 3060 working ? I don't really care about the 55 watt bug as I'm sure there is a way around it . You know I wonder also if we could mod our bios to add the info for our gpus . Maybe we are going about this all wrong and need to modify the bios and flash it? Which might add above 4g decoding?

Here is an example of an attempt to install a 6600xt in an m17x r4.
Seems with the ivy bridge based units it's a matter of modding the inf . Guess the same would be fur the haswell based 18 r1 viking. Might be better just to get the 3060 then since it's the same price

Hello there I have a question regarding newer amd GPUs and our viking and ranger series Alienware s.
Is it possible to use an Rx 6600 or 6600xt with these laptops . Both do ship with ame gpus such as the 7970m and even crossfire . So could we use newer amd cards as well ?

Hello.
What's better, the QTJ0 vs the QTJ1 vs the Xeon E-2286M ES (with a proper model number showed on CPU-Z)?
The Xeon is clocked at 5Ghz max.
QTJ0 at 4.7GHz, overclockable
QTJ1 at 4.6Ghz, overclockable
All the CPUs can undervolt.
Also QTJ1 with proper cooler can all core at 5ghz . So there is that .

The xeon is about 8 percent faster then the 9980hk non oc so it's probably equal at the same clock speed to the QTJ1 . Just FYI 5ghz is single core

Well did test Speedfan in in both of my laptops.
M18x R2 controls all the fans together. So it is either 0rpm, 1900rpm or 4000rpm. HWinfo seems to work better in this scenario, since I can make my own fan curve scenario based on what gets hotter first. I have a 3940xm @ 4,4GHz on all cores and an HP Quadro RTX 3000.
For the 17 R1 I can set individual settings to the fans. CPU can work seperatly to the GPU. With HWinfo, any modification to the fans, it would "brake" the GPU fan and set it's speed to 0rpm until I powered it down. With speedfan, I can have the GPU at 0rpm and CPU fan at 2000rpm and full blast when gaming. My 17 R1 has the stock 4710qm and the PNY Quadro RTX 3000. I will order a 4940mx/4930mx and see where it will oveclock.
Interesting . Glad the 17 r1 can make use of speedfan to control fans . Another mod I see don't to the r1 is the faster fan . And heatsink from cicichan . It's a 5 pipe heatsink . If you are concerned with temps

No bro, this is not compatible with Alienware 18. There is 00VMK2 for Alienware 18, probably has the same performance.
Thanks . Appreciate you 🙂

Just tested it today and it works. I will test it in my 17 R1. If I get a total control of the fans, I will take a shot for a 4930xm and post a benchmark here that Hansell and RTX don't throttle with these settings.
I find it better then the fan curve method I think there is even a batch file that can be made to set the fans to desired speeds . So if you are just surfing the web you can set them to 50 percent or so . Ahd when do anything heavy set to 100 . The 18 isn't that loud

i7-3940XM @4.2 GHz max 77-81 degrees. This is a custom cooler. I recommend using the original 00mxj5. It performs slightly better than this custom cooler. I couldn't find the 00mxj5 anywhere.
The thermal paste I use is Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Extreme.
I found a few places that sell the cooler but it's expensive these work fur the Alienware 18 as well correct ?

I might just grab an Rx 6600xt or 6800 maybe would have better luck with amd GPUs

Hello.
I installed a 3080 in the AW18 R1 and the frames were so unstable. Not because of temps, it's because of the weird power throttling to 55W.
Like it does 110W then 55W then 110W... On every benchmarks. On the 3060, I didn't see any issues until sliderfra did some proper testing with the RTX 3060. He had the same bug as on the 3080.
He didn't found a way to get around the 55W instability bug.
Have you tried the steps mentioned here ?

That's enough for me, I bought the 990 pro heatsink cheaper than the 970 evo plus.
It fits really well and the design is great.
What cpu ? Looks like your rocking cicichans vapor chamber 3 pipe ? How are temps ?

Hello everyone it’s been a while since I’ve been on the forum I had unfortunately got tangled up in a string of unfortunate circumstances this year but it’s finally looking like this are starting to let up so last week I hit the eBay listings and found me another Alienware 18 for a pretty good deal on eBay and thought I’d try to install another gpu and rig up a heatsink for it if need be. I did a little bit of research and thought I’d install one of these 3 cards rtx 3080 mxm, rtx 4080 or lastly rtx 4090 all of them being from X-Vision. However before I make any buying decisions on any of these guys I wanted to get input from you guys and see what yall might recommend between the 3 or if you want to throw more suggestions at me I’m all open to new ideas. Lastly one problem I encounter during my rtx 5000 install that seemed to hinder performance greatly was the power fluctuations I’d experience. The power draw outputted didn’t seem to hold any level of consistency but I was wondering if that could also be expected when installing any of these 3 gpus or if that is a issue isolated to that gpu alone or if the mxm slot in this model is unable to deliver enough power all together even with a shunt mod. I hear a lot of people saying they can pull around 200w off of an m18x r2 and am halfway trying to contemplate if getting another Alienware 18 r1 might be an oversight. If so I very well may try to find an m18x r2. Thank y’all for for taking the time to read this if you made it this far and I’m happy to be back on the forum with y’all pushing the boundaries on the performance we can get out of these majestic relics of the past, it is true what they say they rly don’t make things like they used to.(;
https://notebooktalk.net/topic/2501-alienware-18-r1-rtx-a3000-12gb-mxm/page/5/#comment-60997 check this forum thread . We are discussing what seems to be a bug with the bios with new GPUs pulling over 90watt getting power throttled to 55 watt . My Alienware 18 shipped with two 970s in sli and never throttled . So I want to test a new rtx or even rx 6650xt card and see if there are any throttling . At any rate the bug*seems* to have to do with the PCI Express power management which there is a setting you can change in bios with specific settings to bypass bug . Follow this thread and we might have answers ')
