Well, one of the Corsair sticks died today. I initiated replacement with NewEgg. I was using my computer earlier today and it locked up. I had to hold down the power button to shut it off, and then it wouldn't boot again. Removed one stick and nothing. Same problem. Put that one back in and took the first one out I left in and it immediately booted and ran fine. Put the other stick in by itself and again no boot. The good stick boots fine in either slot and the one that died won't boot in either one.

Put the TeamGroup sticks back in, booted fine. Set manual timings and back to using it until the exchange is complete.

On a sidenote from the heatpipes, I have been struggling with the HM55 build for about the past week... It makes me want to gouge my eyes out.

I got a bracket for my Quadro 600 to use as a GPU, but every time I would put it in, I would get "Disk could not be read" errors (these errors would go away once I reset the BIOS and took the GPU out. For the very few times I managed to get into windows with the Quadro, it has been extremely sluggish. To the point where I have to wait 20-30 minutes for a click to register. I've tried many different Quadro drivers, but they all fail. I decided to run DDU tonight, and it took about 2 hours to do its thing, and then it hung on the logging out screen for another hour. I decided to press the reset button to see if that would fix the soft lock, and thats the last time the computer has booted...

I'm in the process of troubleshooting right now, but the power supply won't even turn on if I jump the starter pins. I've taken out the CMOS battery and used the jumper to reset the BIOS, and that hasn't worked. I've taken the Quadro and the Wifi card out and it still hasn't worked. I'll test RAM in a bit or tommorow, I'm getting really sick of this board.

I've been needing to make a thread with my plans, but I don't even know if I can do what I planned on doing anymore, this board seems to be too problematic. The BIOS is from 2014, and is plagued with problems such as:

  • If RAM speed is set higher than 1066mhz, it bricks the entire motherboard and needs the BIOS to be reset.
  • CPU-Z voltage constantly shows a voltage of 2.232v.
  • CPU-Z also states that the chipset is actually the QM57 chipset, and I can't tell if it is actually a QM57 board or if CPU-Z is wrong.
  • No overclocking in the BIOS, and the multiplier sometimes changes depending if there is a CMOS battery in the motherboard (sometimes x15 when the battery is in, and consistently x20 when the battery is out.)
  • A generally terrible BIOS with few settings to adjust.
  • No display out from iGPU if a dGPU is being used (this may be a normal feature of this board.)
  • Many other minor problems and annoyances that I cannot think of right now (mostly because the board is bricked right now, lol.)

I have emailed the company (PCWinMax) and got a response, I answered the questions they asked me and I still haven't got a response in the past three weeks.

I knew the BIOS would be bad, but I didn't think it would be this bad. If I can't get the board working tommorow, I will raise hell to return it. I really wanted the board to be alright, but its just terrible. My goal was to see if Prema would be interested in unlocking/modding the BIOS, but he is a busy man, and even if he is willing to help, I have a feeling some of the problems with the board are on a hardware level, and are things that can't be fixed.

I really hope this was a defective board, but even if it is, I don't plan on getting another. I might take a shot at the HM77 boards as those seem to be built a bit better and have more reviews, but they're made by the same company, and I worry that more money will be dumped for the same experience I am having right now.

Yeah, I hope not, too. Although, it would not be the first time I had an almost new stick of RAM go bad. I have had a couple DOA before as well. I saw one of the  reviews on NewEgg where another customer complained that one stick of the Vengeance DDR5 was no good. I am glad that the replacement RAM confirmed the Delta RAM got messed up by the BIOS flash. At least the kit worked long enough to verify that, LOL.

The old cliché that they "just don't make things like the used to" is more true now than ever before. Some of the most reputable brands seem to not have any QC any more.

Sorry to hear this. It does seem like a hardware/mobo issue. What I said a moment ago applies to your situation, too.

Sheesh, EVGA Z690 Classified down to $299.23 for their 1-23 sale. $330 off.

https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=121-AL-E698-KR

That certainly didn't last very long. Now it's back to the previously insane but still supposedly discounted price. Same for the Dark. It's too bad the Classified has 4 DIMM slots instad of 2. Ever since I started using 2-slot mobos (or 4-slot X299) I don't want anything with 4 DIMM slots. The memory usually doesn't overclock as well, even when the slots are empty.

Nope no such cards here in Norway. Its ebay auction and I'll pay with credit cards. Wee will see how it pans out🙂 The seller have been on ebay since 2004 and have 100% feedback.

A few 980Ti here but those is the weaker one. And not interested for me.

I wanted only the 980 Ti Lightning or the Zotac GTX 980 Ti AMP! Extreme. I expect getting back my money here if I wanted sell it on the used market here. The cheaper and weaker 980 Ti cards cost well above 200 Euro here home. So this won't be a big lose.

Good news. Microsoft intends to extend paid support for Windows 7 for another three years. I'm sure they know a lot business just don't want their new and flawed OS. Not every day we get such good news bro @Ashtrix @Mr. Fox +++

Microsoft intends to extend paid support for Windows 7 until 2026

Earlier in 2020, Microsoft finished extended support for Windows 7. The company expected users and companies to switch to newer versions of OS, but some of them couldn't do that. So for enterprise customers who had to stay on Windows 7 Microsoft continued supporting Windows 7 on a paid basis.

Wow, this is really solid news. I'm really glad to hear this because 2023 Q1 was the EOL for Windows 7 ESU channel, for the paying customers. But now M$ in damn years did one good thing for money or whatever reason, 2026 ?! That's the Windows 10 EOL (official one at-least, since 1511 Windows 10 first RTM released in 2015). Simplix will keep on releasing the ESU Windows 7 updates as long as M$ releases them.

I just hope all the browsers esp Chrome keeps the support going forth. But for the rest of the Hardware and Software it's unfortunately not the case, Latest QBittorrent which uses QT6 is axing the support, Dolphin Emulator axed it because of same reason but there is an option to get the QT6 working (the #2 comment in that thread mention it). RPCS3 also uses QT for it's front end, nothing yet on their side probably they are just focusing on the backend since RPCS3 is pretty much perfect on the UI side not much is needed. PCSX2 also left Windows 7 support.

As for GPUs RTX 3090Ti is the last most powerful GPU that supports Windows 7. For games, I will try to do a test and compare with Windows 10 LTSC vs Windows 7 to see how DX11 and Vulkan (also DXVK) fares in these. My project, still the blow from ASUS was a huge one that knocked me out in finishing my PC.

I think the reasons were entirely self-serving. Not because they care, and not because they are "good people" because the exact opposite is true. They did it for self-preservation, because they know there are still multiple millions of people--including businesses--that are not going to drink their urine-flavored Kool-Aid and will abandon Windows when they can no longer use Windows 7. Some will switch to Linux, some to crApple, and some begrudgingly to Winduz 10/11 only when they are forced to because they did not plan ahead carefully enough and/or the software their business requires to function can't work on Linux or crApple. The tiny group that will be dumb enough to jump to Mac haven't figured out that Windoze 10/11 suck so bad precisely because they are reading from pages in the crApple playbook.

For that reason, I probably will not upgrade my GPU any time in the foreseeable future. And, if and when I do it will be because it is supported by Linux. I am very close to the point that I don't give a rat's ass what the Redmond Retards do about anything. I value their new "products" roughly the same as I do the ABC gum stuck on the underside of a table in a booth at a filthy diner on the dirty side of the railroad tracks.

Maybe this is a bigger problem than we know. Apparently, I am not the first and it is happening on other brands as well. Post #1 and #6 are of particular interest.

Nice. Happy I don't like RGB and bloatware. And not the first time RGB software screw up. Yep, thanks but no thanks.

I don't like it either. I do not mind the light, but having to run crappy bloatware to change it to white really sucks. And, all of the software made for RGB is totally trash.

That said, that person is just guessing. I don't know that it is accurate. If the Corsair stick that died actually died and did not get corrupted, it has no RGB. I selected it as a replacement specifically because it is not RGB memory.

I am very happy to hear you are alive and well in the crazy upside down world we live in today.

I have attached two CPU-Z reports. One with known good Corsair Vengeance modules I used to test and verify my motherboard was OK, and a CPU-Z report from the TeamGroup memory that was corrupted when I updated my MSI BIOS. As you will see, the product name, production date and SPD timings were altered and neither DIMM matches the original information. One looks like it may be messed up more than the other and both had the XMP profiles erased. MSI is saying this is” not possible” but it happened exactly when I flashed their latest BIOS update (A60). As soon as it rebooted after flashing the memory was corrupted and the XMP profiles erased.

As a side note, this might not be unusual. Looking for answers, I stumbled upon this thread. It looks like ASUS has a tool that allows saving and/or reprogramming the SPD, but it does not work on my MSI Unify-X. When I try to launch it, it says “not supports” and will not run.

Hello Mr. Fox,

Thank you for your message!

At this moment I don't have any idea about flashing SPD of DDR5 memory modules. My software is not ready to work with DDR5 modules, sorry. JEDEC didn't respond to all my requests regarding the documents that I need to continue developing my software. However, not long ago I found an outdated JEDEC DDR5 SPD spec that helped me get started on Thaiphoon Burner 17. I don't know when it will be ready, because I really feel tired and out of energy spending my free time on my hobby. Maybe when I have a new PC with DDR5 I will be spending more time on Thaiphoon. Anyway, you can send me a text report from CPU-Z containing the SPD dumps of your modules to let me see whether you should worry about them.

With best regards,

Vitaliy.

Its a long story, but I've got the motherboard working again, either my power supply is dead (which I hope it isn't) or something went terribly wrong.

Anyways, I've been trying to get SetFSB to work, but none of the clock generators work. Most of them give me errors while a few others will freeze the system or put a few random colored pixels on my monitor. Are there any other tools you guys are aware of that will allow me to up the BCLK?

It's a long shot, but have you tried XTU? It is hit or miss whether it allows you to adjust it.

Here is a link to download older versions that I have archive. Try one with a date close to when your CPU was released.

I've tried XTU, but the new versions and the Haswell version you gave me don't work. I haven't dug too deep into finding a working XTU version for the Arrandale chips, but I guess I could start digging. Thanks for the suggestion!
