Hey everyone, does HID Evolution still offer discounts to members on here?

I’m looking at a custom MSI GT77 with the 13980HX, and RTX4090. Mini LED display 17.3” display.

They offer an option with 128GB DDR5 5600Mhz 😁

Too bad Spartan parted ways with us.

BTW No way it will run at 5600MHz stable, I think, unless perhaps they configured it with some atrocious > 40CL latencies.

What in the world would you need a laptop with a 128gb of ram for?

Man, that’s terrible. I’d love to find a discount through them somehow or someone. As for the 5600, I have no idea if it can be achieved probably not lol. The 13980HX is supposed to be top tier silicon option though, maybe a good IMC too. It would be a blast to push the memory a little, the options are in the bios to do so. (To an extent) I know that someone ran 2x32GB@5600 on one of these models. But this is really new territory for me all over again. I’m just after a work horse that’ll run for the next 3+ years with really good performance.

This machine is a 64GB or 128GB option from most retailers. So the 128GB of ram is not that much more, about $200 extra dollars.

Also, if you disable your windows page file and go run a demanding game. You’ll find after a few hours of gaming, more than half of that 128GB will be consumed. Our page file makes 32GB of ram seem acceptable, even though it’s really not. But yes I think, 128GB of ram is really a lot! 😁

It's this one, right? https://www.hidevolution.com/msi-titan-gt77hx-13vi-042us-17-3-uhd-144hz-i9-13980hx-rtx-4090.html

Check out the disclaimer: "speeds subject to system capability"

Unless you really need 128GB, get the 2x32GB config. 4 DIMM DDR5 dual channel support is a mess. I have a 5600 MHz Kingston kit, and after months of tuning and BIOS updates I managed to run at... wait for it:

Spoiler

5000 CL38 stable (I can go a bit higher to 5200 for "benching" purposes, but errors eventually show up). 5600 never booted.

MSI compatibility list said it's not even supposed to run in 4 DIMM config, and the most they officially support with any 4x32GB RAM kit is 4400 I think. Asus and Asrock were even worse.

I would be astonished if things looked any better on a laptop.

If you get the 4-stick kit, but you don't need that much RAM, you will just end up taking 2 sticks out and selling them, in order to run the RAM at full speed.

Also the RAM is strangely cheap. $400 for 128GB? I would inquire what exact modules are supplied... Might turn out you are better off getting the cheapest config + some better aftermarket RAM.

That was based on my desktop experience. I find it hard to believe things are looking better on the mobile side, but for $400 you might just give it a go and find out.

13900K + MEG ACE Z690

I mean it's a known issue, google/YT/RAM compatibility pages for various mobos will quickly corroborate.... unless something improved in the Z790. I think I did check that before but let me double-check.

Edit: Yeah, looks like things have improved a bit on the Z790 - they now support up to 5200 on 4 DIMM configs, which I guess means it could go even faster.

You should easily be able to run 5600 with 64GB of ram on a desktop. That seems crazy right?

Man I can push 32GB to 8,000 C36 on a MSI Z690 motherboard 😂. All with 1.194V SA, 1.4V CPU IMC, and 1.4V TX.

Honestly, I really have no need for 64GB or 128GB ram. I’m all for saving money. I just found a similarly equipped machine at Microcenter for $4,699.99. I would swap the ram for 2x16GB 5600 SODIMMS, and just force the 5600 speeds like others are doing. Or better yet, LEAVE IT BE. And just manually set the fastest speeds it can run.

^ This is not a bad price at all. I know it’s still a crazy expensive laptop, but it is a fast machine for sure.

64GB is fine, runs at full speed. It's just those 4 DIMM configs that are problematic. Little reason to believe things look better on a laptop. Would just get the fastest possible  2x16GB config in your shoes (or 2x32GB) to avoid frustration.

Four sticks of DDR4 overclocked poorly compared with two sticks and that problem is even worse with DDR5. Best configuration for memory overclocking is two modules and a two-slot motherboard.

If you're wanting to play around with 4000 series and HX processors, MSI Titans are stupidly expensive but as close to true DTR as you will get for BGA laptops.

For myself, I would go for this:

I have one of these arriving Tuesday.

Step down in GPU, same CPU less than half the price and hand pick your memory.

I will say I do like that MSI uses a direct variant of their desktop BIOS on their laptops though.

Put the 2080 Super in my P870 and no POST at all. The laptop would try to turn on but failed every time. There's no power going to the card as the core and VRAM don't get warm. I oughtta probe this thing a bit more and see if I can find something weird.

I have been considering the Asus Scar laptop heavily actually!! It’s a great price too! However, I am really wanting a Mini LED display, I hate backlight bleed from an IPS display, something that is non existent on a Mini LED, it gives that MacBook looking display feel, and makes the machines feel high quality, which is nice after spending thousands of dollars. After owning (2) very high end gaming laptops the thing I hated the most of IPS bleed and glowing corners (My MacBook Air M1 doesn’t have this, it feels quality) lol. The 16” Scar has this Mini LED option, and the 17.3” MSI GT77 Titan too. But $4,799 for a laptop is an OBSURD amount of money for a BGA Book with a massive ACE hanging off the back of it. I mean that GT77 Titan girl has some serious back on her LOL.  Kinda like that song “Body like a backroad” well in this case, the MSI Titan has a “Body like a Backhoe”

The MSI really has me torn. I feel like it’s the best option. But that price! I’d be buying it from Micro center, so if I didn’t absolutely love it I could return it.

@johnksss does Microcenter offer that warranty on laptops too? So I could technically use it for 1 year, return it and get a gift card for $4,799 towards next gen model? 🙃

It is not clear if they will release an X670. They are usually late to the party, so they might. I've not heard or read anything suggesting they will. But, I do not think the X570 Dark was as successful as they had hoped, and if memory serves me correctly it was their first ever AMD board. By the time they made it to market most of the people that were going to go with an X570 platform had already bought something else. Rumor also has it that they had some trouble getting AMD to approve of the BIOS being done in the typical EVGA extreme performance focused kind of way, and we see how that turned out with NVIDIA's control freak approach to things. (EVGA ended the relationship rather than submitting to NVIDIA's demands.)

The ASUS Crosshair X570 firmware was a totally botched up mess because of AMD insisting that ASUS inject their dumbed-down firmware options. ASUS mingled that "approved" mess with the way the firmware should have been, and that made for a very clumsy UEFI environment, with conflicting and incompatible options.

Yeah, it was connected.

I finally found some MXM pinout schematics and a 2 hour long tutorial of how to diagnose a GPU that isn't detected whatsoever. I've got a decent magnifying tool and plan on checking everything after school tomorrow. While I don't have the resources or tools to fix it, I'll feel at peace if I can figure out why it's not letting the computer POST.

From the little testing I've done, Clevo's MXM pinout is identical (or at least very similar) to the MXM 3.0 Standard pinout. I really hope Clevo's isn't much different as I remember to use the 10x+ series cards in other laptops, you had to do some funky stuff with the pins. I'll dig on the old archive and look at your tutorial to see what pins Khenglish modified and see what those exact pins are linked up to on the MXM standard.

Lot's of problem solving; it's annoying, but it's fun.

The pinout is the same, but they use some typically unused pins for adding power rails that the MXM standard does not use.

Put the 2080 Super in my P870 and no POST at all. The laptop would try to turn on but failed every time. There's no power going to the card as the core and VRAM don't get warm. I oughtta probe this thing a bit more and see if I can find something weird.

Here's two videos: (I've never uploaded to Youtube and don't know why the top video came out as a short and I'm too lazy to fix it.)

That is how it progressed on my X170SM-G. It went from:

Working (( was in the middle of setting it up for travel not even gaming or anything)

Hard blink red dots Code 43

No Post

No Post with a series of blinking yellow lights on the power on LED indicating GPU failure

Popped in a Clevo 1060 I had and it booted up no problem

Put 2080 S back in and step 4 again

When ZtecPC got it after sourcing a brand new 2080 Super it wouldn't post at all even with the new 2080 Super no matter what they did so they swapped in a brand new motherboard and heatsink and it worked perfect after that.

The blessing was I was able to get rid of all that K5 Pro mess and the heatsink with the LM soak damage from the original purchase config and go back to a solid 2080 Super + Motherboard and stock thermal pads right from the factory brand new.

Common sense has to kick in at a certain point for laptops these days. Titan is a beast but with the Strix you're getting 100% its CPU, 80% of its GPU and an 18" screen for less than half the price along with a 2-SODIMM design that will give it a better chance of running higher frequency memory now and down the road.  I'm more interested in the 18" display and 13980HX more than anything else. The 4080 is a nice uplift from the 3070/3070ti/2080Super laptops I have on hand atm.

IPS glow doesn't bother me at all but having used mini LEDs and OLEDs before you can definitely notice those inky blacks and per pixel lighting on OLED or zone control with mLED.

The Titan IS the best option but at a monster price.

You could get a Desktop 4090 AND a Strix / Eluk for the same or less than the cost of a Titan to put it in perspective. 🙂

Yep you’re right! Honestly, the Asus Scar 16 with Mini-LED display does sound good right about now, it is a top contender. These are all new devices and freshly released, I’m gonna be thinking hard about which gaming laptop to get over the next 1-2 weeks. It’s an exciting venture.

I find it sad that MXM is dead… And when I am actually at a point in my life where I could potentially spend a good chunk on a real dream machine laptop. All of the actual “Dream Machines” are no where to be found.. Man, I remember drooling over building some over the top spec’d out P870 SLI rig years ago. And now 2023 we just don’t have machines like that anymore. I feel like it’s time for a company to make a laptop that uses actual desktop parts. I feel like it could be possible. If you take a 4080 desktop and remove the heat sink and I/O shield it’s tiny! Now we cap it to 200ish watts and put it in a laptop.

Anyways, BGA it is. 😁

Finally put in the HOF in the Black Box. Will be more like Black & White now😎 Could have been a better oc'r but memory at least above 1500 and cores above 300. And it seems I have to make a Win 11 install for this fancy card. This new modern OS will only used for benching... I just can't use it 24/7. Still no time for the small screen for the graphics card. I just hooked it up to the PSU shroud. So no time for fiddling with new bloatware, LOOL

The card is very stiff and solid. So you really don’t need to use the silver shining sagging bracket you can see in front of the pump.

Almost all his scores are low with his HOF card.....

If you look into right below corner then you see Zippytek use another benchers OS build. Only God know how this custom OS works out. I have never had much success with many of the so called tweaked OS for maxed out performance that flooding around from different tweakers on the Web/YouTube. Maybe I doing something wrong but bench results is often bad with others customized OS builds.
