The common acceptance of trash is probably why we see so many garbage GPUs from NVIDIA. The bottom-feeders are why we can't have nice things anymore. It wasn't enough for them to ruin laptops. They are like rats. Rats multiply rapidly, spread disease, consume trash and ruin everything.

@Papusan brother @Mr. Fox alot of people game, most in their 30s people find enjoyment from it, I play chess because I enjoy it, you benchmark for the same reasons as do I. but even someone thats quick like a snail. this trend needs to stop, bring back mxm and socketed cpus. bring back excellent cooling and match desktop performance.

 

if that happened I would not switch to desktop due to the massive size and lack of portability, desktops are like heavy haulers, laptops used to be like ferraris. I don't see any use for a desktop besides raw power for video editing and gaming. what do you use your  4090s for>? cause at this point I dont even know, maybe you code or use in house AI. I just think now that 99 percent of all stuff is run off the cloud its not the way it used to be, now all you need is a internet connection.

For all the people here who've purchased a GPU on launch day online, do you have any tips or useful information? I really want to be sure I can get a 4070 Super the day it comes out. My assumption is to have Amazon, BB, and Newegg open and just try to add one to my cart and pay for it ASAP.  I've never made a day one purchase like this, and would like to avoid waiting for a restock.

I don't remember ever buying new tech on launch day. I generally wait a bit (30-90 days) to see how things shake out after the hype train returns to the station. As excited as I am about Battlemage, I will most likely be letting other people spend their money first and watching what happens. Your best bet might be camping out at a local retailer, arriving early enough to be at or near the front of the line.

In order of day one acquisition:

 

#1. Microcenter in person

#2. Call or Email Adorama and BH Photo to see if they're going to have stock

#3. Best Buy Refresh

#4. Newegg Refresh

#5. Amazon (make sure shipped and sold by Amazon)

 

I'm not sure if Best Buy is doing Plus/Elite member only options.

 

I expect a slow sellout which means they will sellout but it won't be instant.

Have the apps on your phone. So Best Buy, Newegg, and possibly Amazon (usually Amazon sucks and won't have day 1 stock from my experience). 

 

Be logged in with your payment information and shipping address saved to your account.

 

I also use Apple Pay which makes check out even easier as you can just hit a few buttons and your on your way and it's usually much quicker than trying to go through multiple pages of a swamped server on launch day. 

 

Good luck! The Super series actually look to be a nice refresh.

4080 Super with a $200 price drop and more performance? Yes please. It went from being the laughing stock of the 4000 series to now just being mildly annoying but a good buy especially compared to the 7900xtx (unless you need 24GB of VRAM).

Are you referring to the Tornado F5? I didnt buy it. It was a product review. My re-entry to desktop world and abandonment of laptops began with 8700K. To the best of my recollection, the only products I have had on or before launch day are product review items. And those do not count since they are not purchased items.

based on my most recent experience getting the 4090:

 

- have as many shops open and ready to go as possible. i was at like 15 different shops. dont just go for the "usual" ones like amazon, newegg, best buy, cuz thats where most ppl would run to. especially with brands where warranty goes through the manufacturer, the shop u get the hardware from matters less.

- dont give up after just 30-60 min. lean into the grind, it took me several hours until i finally got the model and pricing i was targeting for the 4090 😛 most buyers only try 2-3 shops and give up after half an hour, use that to your advantage.

- set your budget and model / sku beforehand and stick to it. dont waver and suffer through buyers remorse afterwards.

- have address, payment options, everything ready so check out is a breeze.

- even when a shop goes "out of stock", keep refreshing it. they sometimes restock inside a few minutes or hours, since they dont sell off everything at once but trickle it out bit by bit.

- ideally, take the day off 😄

People and the tech press talking about 4080 Super more as a bargain... It's not. Hugely overpriced with $999. Thats a price hike north of 42% over previous gen xx80 card like the 3080. It should have been sub 7% as for the 4090 over 3090. Sad if I seein people is happy with this new DISGUSTING price tag. Even if they talk about price vs performance. No xx80 models is worth $1000. None!

 

And I feel pitty for those that paid $1199 MSRP for the vanilla 4080 SKUs. And what with those that paid normal MSRP for 4080 Strix OC at same MSRP as the cheapest 4090 models? No thanks. The 4090 at MSRP is the only good option this gen cards. Overpriced yes, but not a scam as the xx80 cards. Super or not super.

 

And don't be surprised if we will see the flagship 4080 OC models at the old $1199 price tag or above. That's +$200 premium.

The 5800X3D and RTX 3090 are still doing quite well for me in pretty much all the things that I throw at it, now I am gaming at 3440x1440 as opposed to 2560x1440 that I was doing before and still havent felt like my 3090 was lacking in any meaningful way.

 

If anything I think I need what is called a Line Conditioner, as when the power consumption starts creeping up into the 500w on the GPU my monitor begins to flicker lol. I stopped being lazy and just set an FPS limit / Vsync for 144hz, sometimes 120hz pending the type of gameplay at hand. 

 

I am looking into using Sunshine and Moonlight for the Remote VM Gaming system but now it looks like Im going to have a new room mate so I need to move everything back up stairs (again).

The 4070 Ti Super really should have been $749 to give it more separation from the 4080 Super. I mean, if you have the cash for the former at $799, it's really not that much of a stretch to upgrade to the latter. This leaves me in a bit of pickle for my upcoming desktop upgrade. Not that there's anything wrong with my 5950X, I just want something better for gaming since my MacBook is now doing the heavy lifting I need for work. 

 

I had purchased a Radeon 6500 XT for like $100 open box from Best Buy to use as a stopgap until I get the new PC, but I still feel like I got ripped off. It's funny because HUB just did a video showing how that GPU has aged like milk. I was still able to return it and grabbed an open box RTX 4060 for $230 instead. That will also have the upside of making the entire system easier to sell when the time inevitably comes.

 

I'm leaning toward socket AM5 for the new build, but I almost feel like I should wait for Intel 15th-gen. I'm not sure I can hold out that long, though LOL.

It was too long ago to recall with absolute certainty, but I believe it was the TF5 and Eurocom secured it so @Prema could get the BIOS mod ready. But, it was long enough that I could be totally wrong or mistaken about which system it was. It may have been the P870DM. Whichever it was, it was provided for that purpose and I did not purchase it for my own use. It was when 8700K landed that I shifted my interest to desktop. I could not buy one anywhere and eventually gave up trying to (after several months) and ordered a prebuilt from iBuyPower so I could have an 8700K. OEMs/System Builders was the only way to buy one for like 6 months if memory serves me correctly.

I've heard some not good things about 15th Gen. If any of the scuttlebutt is true, it might be a downgrade. I'm not sure how much is true at this point. It would be disappointing to wait for 15th Gen only to find out you'd have a stronger performer with a 13th or 14th Gen CPU. Reminds me a bit of 11th Gen. Made no sense for it to even exist. I guess we will all find out together.

I will have a surprised look on my face if "MSRP" actually turns out to mean anything. It has been a long time since we have seen a GPU sell for the correct price. They seem to sell for "whatever the market bears" and the market is controlled by evil people and price gouging is facilitated by stupid people willing to overpay for whatever they want without questioning anything.

 

I wish I knew the answer to that last question. If I had to take a guess, I would assume stupidity or differing priorities, or a combination of the two. Either way, it sucks. We could build a pretty long list of negative adjectives, and most would be accurate.

Perhaps a 13900K and an RTX 4080 purchased on sale/clearance would make more sense. I also wouldn't mind going with something like a Ryzen 7 7700 with its 65W TDP as that could easily be managed with a 240mm AIO and the fans on a low setting. Though pairing it with a higher-end GPU may not be the best idea. I don't know. Will have to see how the market shakes out over the coming weeks.

You can UV 13900K to deliver bulk of the stock performance while drawing 225W-250W. I would assume 14900K is pretty similar in that regard, although not sure if it is capable of delivering more performance per Watt in that range. Either way, if you are planning on using all cores in those CPUs, then a 240 AIO would likely prove highly frustrating.

That's what Nvidia hope for. They have counted in this with the pricing. Same tactic as with the pricing of vanilla 4080 vs 4090. A much cheaper 4080 would mean less sales of the 4090. Btw, a lower price point as $749 for the xx70 TiS is even more expensive than previous gen xx80 cards. One tier up in price + inflatition (7-8%) wasn't enough for Nvidia. They wanted premium on top. FYI... 3070Ti was $599. $100 below the 3080. Now we see $200 difference between xx70Ti vs xx80 SKU.

 

 

@Mr. Fox are you ready to support Dell Alienware with $199.99 USD ? Me.... Nope. Neither should you.

The X670E Carbon arrived today and I'm quite impressed. While the box was a bit dinged and scratched up, the motherboard appears to be in near perfect condition. No noticeable problems besides a few smudges. It even has the original plastic on it. The board also came with all of the cables and other goodies that would be in an unopened box besides the quick start guide. I can't test it right now as my 7600x is still in transit, but I doubt this thing would be damaged, it looks like it hasn't even been used.

Thanks for the recommendation @electrosoft! I never thought to buy open box from Amazon, and I managed to save a bit of money with this purchase.

Looks good bro, congrats! Mine arrived basically brand new too even with the plastic on the m.2 thermal pads. Plus you got the original box (mine came in a brown box) and cheaper than mine to boot! Can't beat that. 🙂

 

Now if you really want to be a proper MSI shill like myself, get an MSI 4070 Super and your journey to the dark side will be complete.  🤣

That's why I'm hesitant to make the move to Intel this go-round. I've gotten pretty used to the near-silence with which my MacBook Pro operates. I also spent a lot of time tuning the fans on my current desktop to a point where their acoustics are consistent no matter what I'm doing. Load temps are almost certainly a bit higher than other AIO-cooled 5950X machines, but I'm not dealing with the fans ramping up and down.

 

I'm thinking now about swapping the 5950X for a 5800X3D and using that until AMD does a 3D V-cache version of Zen 5.
