The most important thing is that processors remain unlocked so you can do whatever you want. 125W, 150W, 170W TDP doesn't matter if you can push it to 500W-700W-1000W if you want and need to. I set my power limits at 4095W on everything, including turdbooks that would never breach 125W, so that power limits effectively never become a limiting factor, and I always have. I would be super pissed off if I couldn't do that anymore.

Edit: well... that was a waste of time. Pretty worthless in terms of features.  Maybe it would be more useful for AMD or people that are primarily gamers (not overclocking enthusiast) but I'm not seeing any point of having it installed. I can't set higher than 400W on the CPU, which is just a joke. Everything is gimped with max settings that are way too low. Saying it is useful for Intel and NVIDIA shows a pretty massive disconnect.

Definitely an AMD focused tool that has some minimal Intel functionality.

 

I'm more curious to try it on some of my laptops (both AMD and Intel) to see if it helps dial in some cooling profiles.

I have that tool on my Asus g15 turd. It's a must have for notebooks with ryzen, keep the thermal throttling in check with it.

I used that tool on my ZenBook with higher benchmark numbers in night raid. I just use Ryzen controller for lower temp and longer battery life...pretty pointless otherwise

Fantastic scaling. 

 

Ryzen 9 9950X starts hitting a wall beyond the 160W limit, where adding additional power starts to achieve diminishing returns. For example, the jump from 120W to 160W represents a 16% performance improvement, but adding even more power, from 160W to 200W, yields a measly 5% improvement. This trend continues to 9999W, where more power only results in minor performance improvements.

TBH I think this is just more of the same from Intel. They are sitting by and letting AMD eat some of their cake and acting like they can do nothing about it. I don't get it. AMD has pretty clear road maps and they let customers know their sockets will be supported, even if not clearly defined what support means. Intel lets this be an advantage over their offerings by simply refusing to do this simple gesture. Talk about shooting yourself and your brand squarely between the eyes. 

 

The tick tock days needed to end a long time ago for Intel. There is no reason a socket cannot be used across a few generations of CPUs. AMD has forced motherboard OEMs to support the idea and there is no reason Intel cannot do the same. Otherwise we just continue to create more and more e-waste. A socket change should only happen when absolutely necessary as they rarely bring anything exciting these days.

The 7950x will run circles around the 7800X3D for encoding. Ido not have the experience with WoW that @electrosoft has, but the 7950x is no slouch for gaming.

7950x will absolutely face smash the 7800X3D for encoding. I went with the best of both worlds and just grabbed the 7950X3D. Compared to the 7800X3D, you are looking at a slight performance uplift for WoW with the Non-X3D CCD turned off. I just hop into the BIOS and turn it off for gaming but you could also try to get Gamebar or PL to play nicely too. I find just turning it off works the best overall. Then I turn it back on after. I sometimes just leave it off though or forget to turn it back on. 🙂

Agreed. With that being said, a 7600x can beat a 5800X3D in gaming and it just gets better as you scale upward. 7950x is a very competent gaming chip. If you don't want to deal with PL, GB or BIOS disabling, you can't go wrong with a 7950x.

 

@win32asmguy, I would go with a 7950X3D and get the best of both worlds. If multithreaded performance is important to you significantly, I would skip the 7800X3D especially with 7950X3D pricing as it is atm. $459.98 @ Amazon is a damn good deal.

This.

 

Holding back and slowly doling out chips to the consumers for maximum profit is old hat for Intel. Switching chipsets and even blocking older chipsets that are socket compatible from running newer chips is also classic Intel.

 

They could learn a thing or two from AMD and not only extend the socket life (while also introducing newer chipsets for new customers or current customers if they want with QOL/upgrades) but also showing their true chip roadmaps to give buyers future assurance of chip purchases.

 

That is one thing I always liked about AMD.

There not sitting by and letting anything happen, the cpu's like KS are already pulling 450 W unrestrained on ambient....there maxed out. Time for a change. You guys will see soon enough.

Here are the old parts. I got everything working on the test bench after work.

 

Traded a kit of 32GB Crucial Pro DDR4 (new sealed package) and an EVGA Z15 clicky keyboard (lightly used) for these items.

  • 4820K
  • Rampage IV Gene
  • 32GB (4*8GB) Kingston HyperX Beast DDR3-2400
  • EVGA GTXX Titan GPU

The Xeon E5-1680 V2 that I bought on eBay for $45 will be here on Monday. I am using the EK Nucleus Dark AIO on it. Using a spare PSU (Corsair RM1000e). Everything is working well. The GPU still had the clear plastic on it.

I got the BIOS mod with NVMe support for X79, which is not supported natively. (NVMe did not exist when X79 was released.)

Using the Z790i Lightning so far....

 

I did re-verify with DDR5 (already had checked with DDR4) to check for SA Bug (set SA to 1.35)on the SP109 and nope, no bug. I let TM5 run for awhile. Speaking of which, the new, cleaner look is very nice. Asrock read the V/F 6.2 point at 1.484 (vs 1.488 on Asus).

 

While the Lightning has a better VRM design (14+1+1 vs 10+1 on the Edge and Asus Z790i boards) this SP109 is a furnace with these early runs. This little board unleashed I was pulling 400w and 320a on this 14900KS holy moly before throttling with this Lian-Li Galahad performance AIO which is a beast. Problem is CB23 keeps capping out around 40k.

 

Looks like the board tops out at a -100UV which can't be right. That's laptop shenanigans. I must be missing something but I'm beat so I'll come back at it tomorrow. Playing with LLC vs PL vs UV. I might have to dial in fixed to calm this thing down. 🤣

 

I may have finally met my match the first time with a chip that requires a delid and/or better cooling (CL, DD, Chiller), but we'll see.  🤗

Intel's upcoming Arrow Lake and Panther Lake CPUs will feature a maximum temperature limit (TJMax) of up to 105°C, surpassing the 100°C limit of the previous Raptor Lake series. This adjustment marks a significant change in Intel's approach to thermal management for its processors.

 

See also.... Currently,  Meteor Lake CPUs already display these temperature limits and, sometimes, even go a little higher. This is notably the case of the Core Ultra 5 115U which displays 110°C.

The Xeon E5-1680 V2 that I bought on eBay for $45 will be here on Monday. I am using the EK Nucleus Dark AIO on it. Using a spare PSU (Corsair RM1000e). Everything is working well. The GPU still had the clear plastic on it.

That is so cool especially the GPU and motherboard! I had a i7 3820 X79 platform. That was in like 2013 though. It was a really good overclocker. Unlike yours, mine had a semi locked multiplier. You could set 4.3Ghz, and use a little BCLK to get to 4.9-5Ghz for benching. I vote another GTX Titan as well!
 

Retro builds are so cool. What’s funny is, this new system you have here is so much faster than most of my agents computers they buy from Walmart today for like $300-$400 dollars 🤣

My older son checked out Dell Alienware Sales page on Dell today. There is no more mem options than 5200 and below. Would be nice if some of you could check out different pc options at Dell/other big partners and see if there is something into this. Damn nice if Intel have a serious problems with their cpus paired with 5600 mem kit and above. We have already the SA bug. Well see if the problem is mem speed related. Hmmm.
