My older son checked out Dell Alienware Sales page on Dell today. There is no more mem options than 5200 and below.

When I was still doing beta product testing for Dell/Alienware they made it very clear that they are dead set against memory overclocking and all-core overclocking for some stupid reason. They wanted memory left on SPD default and only single-core overclocking. This was back in 2010-2012. Well, we know how I feel about that kind of lame suckiness. Wasn't long after that I was no longer part of their program. No loss, really. Just look at what a joke Alienware is today. The kings of trash. You're better off buying some crappy "gaming desktop" on Temu or AliExpress. At least it won't be built with proprietary trash components.

That is so cool especially the GPU and motherboard! I had a i7 3820 X79 platform. That was in like 2013 though. It was a really good overclocker. Unlike yours, mine had a semi locked multiplier. You could set 4.3Ghz, and use a little BCLK to get to 4.9-5Ghz for benching. I vote another GTX Titan as well!

Retro builds are so cool. What’s funny is, this new system you have here is so much faster than most of my agents computers they buy from Walmart today for like $300-$400 dollars 🤣

I'm a sick puppy. Four desktops now. Disgusting but also a gratifying mental illness.

The E5-1680 V2 is out for delivery. Should be about double the peformance of the 4820K. (Double the cores and threads and unlocked. multipliers.)

I have forgotten how to overclock these antique setups. Things have changed so much in some ways, not in others. I had forgotten that 1.575V Vcore and 1.650V memory voltage was not a big deal back then.

It's also interesting how this EK 360 AIO can keep the 4820K so cool with 1.575V compared to a modern CPU with much lower voltage.

Is today? Have been pure trash since 2013. If not longer ago. Had only one Alienware. And thats a laptop. Bought it in 2013. 2 or was it 3 dead boards. But it still work today. My youngest son use it sometimes when he is not on his desktop I built a couple of years ago. There is no more laptop for me. Too small screen and you can only swap out mem and storage. What a waste. I have with me an small 14" laptop my wife used when she was on school. But have never used it here in Canary vacation. I didn't bother. I just use the Android trashphone. Offer about same experience.

You know, they have some odd ball enterprise chips in that socket, but I believe they are X99. I’m not sure if they are all V3’s for X99 or V2’s for X79. They made a 14 core unlocked for X99. They have the 1680’s 1681’s 1683’s and 1686’s too. There may be a 1691 I cannot remember off the top of my head. I do know of a 12/24 core and a 14/28 core Xeon unlocked that was enterprise only and it was just a monster in its hay day 2014 era.

But that 1680 was always a great chip! It’s just a 5960X for the most part, but they used less power and ran cooler.

Now you got me wanting one!

PS: I had a 1660 V3 years ago. It was a nice chip. This was in 2015 I think. Back then the 1680’s were still like $1,400- $2,000 USD LOL. I have always loved these unlocked xeon chips though. Very few people ran them back in the day.

Just deal in Tjm at 115C and there you go😆 Dell's head thermal engineer say 100C is just fine, HaHa

And Meteor lake is good for 110C so probably 115C in the head of Dell's thermal engineering team.

Seems like a nice CPU. Definitely worth $45 paid for it. Double core/thread count over the 4820K and runs stable with exactly the same BIOS settings, LOL. Will tune it later.

"New CPU Installed. Press F1 to enter setup."

Pressed F1, then F10, and *BOOM* just runs.

Hmmm. 30C here in Canary in the late evening with Kalima (sand in the air from Sahara). Very difficult to breathe. Even my wife who handle all type heat struggle to breathe now. And she love the sun and can sit outside the whole day. Have been up to 42C and with High humidity. What is 100C compared to this? The bungalow puke out 30l water from the AC and I feel messed up. No water around the sun. So it has to be a better place than here🫠

Um, I'm going to assume you meant to save breathe. 🙂

Fully no longer touching the sun now (max temp = 74c on AIO) but going to need to tighten it up more to qualify it for the 12.4L SFF build while finding that perfect all core vs temp range.

Man, GPUs have come such a long way since the first Titan. Even the crappy ones are stronger. But, it's a nice trip down memory lane. Scores are similar to my Prema-fied 980M benchmarks.

I picked up a new 14900K from best buy....could have gotten a 12900KS for $231.99 from amazon on prime day but just didn't feel like it would be much of an upgrade over 10980XE.

I can already feel tasks launching faster than 10980XE. Haven't had any issues yet *knocks on wood*

but will need to move over lots of data before I can start playing with it.

I will say the Z790 PCIe lanes is a bit disappointed. 16x for GPU and 4x for NVMe. The rest come from chipset. Really is a shame intel got rid of true HEDT (44 lanes all from CPU was nice for PCIe upgrades)

My "BGA" alienware with 13900HX gets 37K in CB R23, what should a bone stock 14900K get in CB R23? 40K?

+42.000 if your os isn't bloated.

What is your stock Cinebench 23 score? Loads of test results from reviews and from users is barely 40.000/41.000 for the KS. That's awful result when you know the KS run higher clocks for the P and the E-cores.

I get +42160 in CBR23 with a stock 14900K with default bios. 5.7/4.4/4.5 ring (no XMP) all core clock speed in bench. And CBR23 run with below normal priority. Yep, the OS isn't full of trash tasks in the background but still the KS should provide more Oom-pah.

cinebench-core-i9-14900ks-benchmarks.png

And is there an difference between the SP ranking between the 14th gen K and KS ? Because I see the SP for the E-cores looks worse for the KS. Almost half of the posted results show well below SP80. If there is same SP ranking, it looks very bad for the E-cores on the KS.

Agreed, might as well shoot for the big dog and get a 14900k variant especially if your Alienware has a 13900HX which is basically a desktop chip slapped in there like the AMD X3D laptops (MSI and Asus). Why step backwards?

It's going to vary with so many things in play, but out of box should be ~39k; and unlike our laptops, it can do it indefinitely with zero cooling issues (or it should). 🙂

Since they're all basically the same thing (13900k -> 14900KS), it will come down to cooling, tuning and silicon quality.

I would be disappointed if all I got was 40K. But with all different new settings from MB vendors to stop Crashes maybe thats right. My tests is done without new screw ups and with XMP disabled. See also the results from Techpowerup in my old post.

Both runs with this sp109 14900KS on the Z690 Strix D4 and Asrock Z790i netted about ~40k and monstrous pull and overheating.

This was pure stock, defaults out of the box settings nothing adjusted (not even memory).

Both motherboards were running the newest BIOS as of July 2024.

The 41k+ from my last few posts are starting the fun dial in / tuning locked to 56x / 45x while I continue dial that in as tight as possible, then move to 57x, 58x and 59x rinse/repeat to establish 4 optimal all core profiles to adjust accordingly for the SFF build with it.

The asrock lets you pick from 3 microcode options in the bios which is nice. I haven't explored these yet and am running 125 atm.

I don't know what MB makers are doing with the newest BIOS settings, but seeing what the D4 and Lightning did out of the box is not fixing the extreme overheating or pull.

Probably a good idea. What MB and memory are you using again?

Most people, sadly including gamerboys, are too forgiving and tolerant of the OS filth. It will easily cost them 1500 to 2000 Cinebench R23 points. But they are willing to sacrifice that in exchange for a few extra UWP turds floating in their breakfast cereal. I tried to tell them it was not chocolate milk, but they did not believe me.

Anyhoo... I think I am going to dub this one Methuselah.

I love it! But! That’s kinda silly to me with just 8/16 cores. That’s just not enough juice for gaming with even heavy 4K and pushing 4080/4090. With my E-Cores disabled and tuned 8600c36-49 I get the skips and stutters in some titles with just my 4080S. Maybe some titles are okay. But those E-Cores really help. I’d want 10/20 minimum like the OG 6950X/10900K 😀 but would take more!

The Bartlett 12 P-core model really works for me. I'd maybe settle for a 10 core. 8? I'll just turn off my e-cores and keep it moving....

Nope. The new one is Raptor lake. And probably chips that have E-cores fused of. Aka defective chips. Brand it i9 because of higher boost clock and TDP but with same amount cores is watering down the SKU name.

I am not sure. 8 cores is a low core count. About half what I would like to see, along with hyperthreading. Need at least 32 threads to be completely satisfied. But one thing I am sure about is eliminating the smartphone E-cores is a good thing. I have never liked the idea. They do add a lot of performance, but not as much as they would if the space they wasted was replaced by more P-cores. I am glad to see them pulling their heads out. Now they need to go find the dumb-dumb(s) that suggested it, their boss that allowed them to, and the biggest dumb-dumb of the bunch that approved it. They need to round them up and beat them nearly to death right before they are fired. They're not worthy of holding their positions at Intel, or anywhere else that allows them to work on computer technology.

I hope they perma-scrap the e-core idea along with any notions about the retarded chiplet idea and go back to producing large die head-stomping monolithic masterpieces.

In other news... "In 218 out of 250 games tested, Arc A770 passes with flying colors. This means a flawless launch with no graphical artifacts and playable framerates."

Interesting that 11 of 12 games that failed to work well ran flawlessly after disabling the AMD iGPU in Device Manager. Those games were attempting to use the anemic APU instead of discrete GPU. Only 4 out of 250 crashed hard and refused to work. I am very much looking forward to Battlemage dropping.
