Why the blackout on the IHS in the photo? Just curious.

Does the top PCIe x16 slot no longer have an easy-release button for the GPU latch? Or, did they move it to an obscure location? I did not see that in the motherboard photograph.

Congrats. I see Asus haven't bother change anything regarding fan headers. Do you know if they have added more than one wimpy High Amp fan header? With the extra 8-Pin there should be no problem swap out a few with higher capacity. Idiotic if you can't use the extra 12v line from the extra power connector to something sensible/useful. Not all will use an extra GPU for AI tasks.

They have changed how it works. Just bend the GPU out from the front side and it will pop out. No need for an easy-release button anymore.

Hey sorry, I was trying to prevent the prying eyes from seeing where it came from. It's not the Ultra 9. I have the Ultra 7 265K for testing.

I finally have Windows installed but unfortunately I need the updated BIOS for real testing it seems. This BIOS is quite old from August and is missing latest MC and fixes to other things. Other brands all have their new BIOS online except Asus! Maybe it shows up tomorrow.

Windows 11 F'd me and I had to reinstall again. I was having issues with my 4090 posting code 10 and then after driver install, would not boot into Windows without crashing the entire system. Could not safe mode to fix or anything. Would continue to crash. Unreal. A clean install fixed it though thankfully.

The new GPU lock no longer has a button. You can simply lift the CPU/rock it and it unlocks, it's wild.

The good thing living in Norway. There is almost no options if you want PC components. You can order from another country but that will be away more expensive and the shipping time will be disgusting. MSI Z890 Unify-X... Not even listed. Asus Z890 Apex.... Most Asus boards listed included the Apex, but no prices and unknown delivery date. Maybe they don't know where to put the ROG Tax?  ASRock Z890 TAICHI OCF... Unknown delivery date... No listed two dimm Gigabyte board.  Yup, damn nice live up here in the cold North.

Hmmm. Then I'm at the risk with my hobby (+20 cards)😀 Hope Asus have improved their support/RMA or it will be nasty. I, don't like MSI and Gigabyte. ASRock is tempting due the price but not so sure they follow up with bios updates. Firmware that works and not screw up as EVGA did at the end with some graphics cards. Not fun with a new modern MB that can't handle all older graphics cards properly.

My trust in MB vendors is very limited. And this apply all tech. They screw up in one or another way. And all of them jump if Microsoft-Intel-AMD and Nvidia say they have to jump (out from the cliff).

Yup, even Torvalds don't have any trust in new modern hardware....

The latency and bandwidth on the old Xeon 3175X is pure amazing, this helps it maintain here in 2024 and drive a 4090 😃 This latency is better than most setups today, and very comparable to modern "Fully tuned" CPUs.

I can run these same settings with the FULL 128GB of ram as well. Though, it does affect the active channels reducing bandwidth because 8x16 is an odd number of sticks for this platform. Which is why I run 6x16Gb config of DDR4 Samsung B-Die for now. I will be adding another (4) sticks for a total of (12x16GB) sticks then I can properly run the Hexa channel with all ram slots filled and it won't be an odd number.

G.Skill did produce a 384Gb 12X32Gb DDR4 4000CL17 kit for this motherboard lol. I'd love to find one of those kits. Would probably cost like an insane amount of money though.

It seems like ASRock is staying current with firmware updates, even for older boards. They have BIOS updates for this Z690 board released in the last month or so. But, as long as everything functions correctly no firmware updates matter as they are not needed. And, I like the ASRock BIOS layout. It makes good sense and everything is easy to find. I also like that ASRock does not bundle Intel ME cancer in the BIOS as a trojan like ASSzues does. You have to flash it separately and if you don't want it you do not have to. There is never a need to update Intel ME. In fact, the actual need is for a BIOS menu option to disable it because it serves no useful purpose.

I agree. I do not trust any technology manufacturers. I am not wild about MSI or Gigabyte, but I think they are no worse than ASUS. All of them are untrustworthy, almost as undeserving of trust or admiration as the imbeciles at Micro$lop and crApple. Those two scummy outfits set the standard for suckiness.

What I hate with MSI.... Most locked system of all OEMs regarding custom tweak/XOC software. And Gigabyte don't bother with XOC. + Gigabyte is probably the OEM that use most stickers of them all to tell you why you can't get the repair for free on warranty. They don't even bother open the card before they send it back.

Yeah, I'm still waiting but I sold off my 7950X3D and MSI x670E Carbon to open up a "what if" slot for a 285 if I like what I see. Still have the 7600x/Prime B650/6000 Mdie 2x16GB combo to sell off.

Right now:

If 285 is a go, sell off the rest of my 12th/13th/DDR4 stuff, move my Asrock Z790i+14900KS into the wife's system. Pick up a Z890+285 for my main rig.

If 285 is a no go, ride the 14900KS till next gen (Zen6/16th gen).

If Intel go with Arrow Lake Refresh they need to add more cores (bigger compute tile because they are already on 3nm) and at same time push higher clock speed as for 12th to 13th gen. A usual 4% bump in clock speed as in the old days won't do anything for the gaming performance.

Either 2 extra P-cores (10+16), 8+24 or 10+24 and higher clock speed. Pick your poison for next gen on same socket. But we need much faster P-cores if better gaming performance is the goal. Or add 3D v-cashe in the bottom of the compute tile. The hybrid mess is real. Not much better than the glued mess from AMD.

285-K-die-cores.png

But this die structure smells more babies. Exactly same as going from 12th to 13th gen.  More P-cores just use too much power. So Intel's magic will be more of the same power efficient E-cores and hope higher clock speed bump for the remaining 8 P-cores give a small boost in gaming.
