Users Report Ryzen 7000X3D Chips Burning Out, Killing Motherboards It could be a motherboard BIOS issue.

Asus has just withdrew old BIOSes for many of its AMD X670-based motherboards, but for some of them old BIOSes are still available.

For now, we recommend that those with AMD's Ryzen 7000X3D processors keep a close eye on their CPU temps, use adequate cooling and keep their BIOSes up-to-date.

Great... You will always have to use newest firmware, even if you want it or not. And ASUS and bios updates can be a hit or miss. Mostly a downgrade for stability. But you get latest security patches (some that remember Plundervolt and what it did for Jokebooks?)....

Here is another flooop. But from Nvidia......

0:46 RTX 4070 Week 1 Sales Leak – An Overall Flop

Looks to be Asus only. The one MSI reference was in a YT video and it was a, "he said/she said," at best.

Do you have any concrete direct links to any other motherboards having this problem except Asus because thumbing the article and reddit thread all I'm seeing concretely is Asus and a potential overvolting issue which makes sense with the sensitive nature of V-cache and reduced clocks and voltages.

------

As for the 4070 and >$500 GPU sales flopping, people worldwide have other pressing issues with inflation, recession and needing to keep a roof over their head vs luxury computer devices.

Toss in a sprinkle of GPU fatigue, record sales during the Pandemic/Crypto and the used market saturated with fantastic deals and there you go. 🙂

Only one not reading the writing on the wall is Nvidia who have the ability to stick to their guns and simply opt to reduce production vs lower price. The problem with that model is you reach a point where lower production still has units on the shelves and not moving. Then what do you do? Unfortunately they are emboldened with having used this model to move tons of Ampere stock in the last 6-8 months creating artificial demand.

I guess the time has come sadly. Yest it got shutdown on iGPU, SG mode. I disabled the Nvidia GPU too from Device Manager. Maybe one last test is to remove MXM and see....

@Vasudev, I did not update the machine to any new Microcode, the BIOS is also old A14+ unfortunate that your Echo is failing too. Yea I agree there's not much on the BGA land now, however I checked most of the BGA laptops and some videos yesterday.

Perhaps there's some VRM component failure or PCH related issue I don't know if CPU failure can cause such things too.., cannot be sure at all hard to find out.

Now I'm just thinking about 3 options of new machine - Clevo X170 KM with a lot of baggage attached.., 1/2 BGA Precision 7720 Refurbished for cheap. A BGA Lenovo Legion 7i 2022.

Unfortunate.

I have swapped out the stock SSD and RAM few years ago. Battery was a mess to replace and costed a lot. Dell has pulled the plug and Intel has EOL'd skylake CPU updates. Why not opt for Eluktronics with Prema mod since you're living in the USA or even framework laptop if you don't want DTR/gaming laptop.

In case you cannot save your Alienware you may want to also look into the MSI GT75 - it is quite old now but it has the works when it comes to options and can be had for as low as 600$ with 4 cores:

- overclocking and undervolting with very good (MXM) GPU performance for the 1080 models that can sustain about 200W for a 8000+ Time Spy GPU score, the CPU can sustain south of 100W

- very good accessibility as long as you do not have to access anything above the motherboard but that is doable, too I am told but I have never had to do it on mine

- very good 1080p 120 Hz screen (4k is rare) but should also take QHD and 4K screens or even an 18" ugprade if you are into putting in another screen

- 10G ethernet for the first two generations - no other laptops ever had that - take that puny 2.5G!

- 4 memory slots with up to 64GB and 4 drive bays for storage (3x m2 and 1x 2.5") with excellent cooling

- very nice mechanical keyboard but you got to be able to tolerate "unique" key placement

- excellent fan control options and very quiet in normal use

- excellent sound, among the best and also plays quite loud

- overall among best in class connectivity

And you did not mention them but I have looked at Clevo P775 / P870 prices and they have been going for as low as 600$ it seems with a 1080 so they would be excellent deals for a fully upgradeable and modular platform. That is if you can put up with their subpar keyboard and not very exciting base chassis and buggy software. So you will possibly want to put more work into them but it also means that you CAN put more work into them and the threads in the Clevo section prove it 😄

If you start out with at least the DM3 versions then you can always upgrade from that later with the final options being 9900K, 3080 and even special heatsinks with and without watercooling. The rabbit hole goes very deep...

Oh and X170SM-G with 10900K and 2080 Super have been as low as 1100$ lately which was a steal. If you want more drives and 10 cores it will be preferable to the X170KM-G.

No comment on recent BGA books but you may get best bang for the buck CPU and GPU performance out of the usual suspects with a 3070 or 3070 Ti, there are even a bunch of good screen options. Pride of ownership you will obviously not get and I will leave it to others to make recommendations there as I have no interest in them.

Thanks a lot for suggestions, yea that MSI option seems really damn good compelling option like Precision 7720 but these all laptops (X170SM/KM, MSI,  Precisions and older Clevo DTRs) are hard to find in good well maintained condition. I'm also trying to see if I can get this AW17 R1 repaired as like the machine and do not want to simply dump it.

P775 is kinda too old so I did not put any research into them, P870 is a good choice but then again, I thought X170 series is somewhat newer with more recent LGA desktop processors and works better for a new purchase prospect. Esp given the age of those P775 and P870 platforms and my old machine too. So it has to be pampered which kinda are unicorns.

I saw Framework thought it's too new for  a gen 1 launch and as you add modules it gets more expensive and the HW performance is not that much for the Price esp when you see the price to performance of a Desktop. Only reason why I was into Socketed Clevo and others being I feel like the Mobos are built better rather than the welded versions. The Initial idea of BGA Lenovo Legion 7i I dropped it. $2000 of BGAware and for that cash I could just pick up a brand new X670E AMD AM5 board mATX box that would smoke out even the next gen due to AM5 socket being Zen 5 ready forget the BGA junk.

While the BGA one might live as long as warranty exist but it's going to be expensive later on and replacement parts will be insanely expensive. I see AW17 parts being very cheap (including mobo), I see the BGA AW parts by side and they cost 5x more lol  for which a P5000 MXM could be bought or even a P4000 choice being an option makes it outlast a lot of machines that came after it in welded format. Premamod is a mega bonus perk and an incentive but BGA is really a massive let down you mean there are Laptops with Premamod + BGA ? But the more I think the more old NBR BGA-Hate threads I recall haha,

I guess it all depends from where you are coming from as those units are not that old compared to your Alienware 😄

Yes it is not that easy to find them in good condition and at a good price any day of the week but then they are used and at least in the US offers are pretty abundant if you are observing ebay for a while and I am sure there are other places where you can find deals.

If you look for something newer that is fully socketed then indeed the X170 is your best bet but it will cost you more and you got to be patient when waiting for a good deal and cheaper ones may have some cosmetic issues.

Best of luck getting your GPU or motherboard fixed so that the AW17 R1 will live to game another day.

If this is a Asus bios problem. I wonder how many have a half fried (half fry) X3D Ryzen chips that will die in the coming months (updated firmware don't fix half-fried Ryzen chips😎)

Yet. another failure from AMD. They want that you buy their new high end... And/or the new low end.

AMD launches Radeon RX 7600 in May

After several months of silence, new information points to the next graphics card from AMD being a mid-range model unveiled at Computex.

It's possible that AMD feels that another upper-mid-range graphics card simply can't compete in terms of price or performance. So better wait with it.

Apparently NOT just Asus. MSI is also now restricting voltage to X3D CPUs.

Whats up with Asus and prices in U.S ? Do you pay tax on pc parts in California?

$760.15 USD or much lower $608 here home without the added/forced Norwegian 25% tax. So this Asus MB should only cost around 605$ (in U.S statesor other places without any taxes/fees).

So you pay close to 9% tax on top of goods in CA ? What if you order from shops outside the State you live in? Still have to pay the same tax? Same as here home?... Everything will be added the 25% tax. And same for shipping/and handling the orders. But we get 5 years free warranty (nice for second hand sales). I still would prefer no tax and 1 or 2 years limited warranty. 3 years for Asus boards

Btw. MSI MEG Z690 Unify-X cost $445 or $356 without tax in the Store. Brand new, but Z690 as I don't think MSI offer newer gen Unify-X boards.

Apparently NOT just Asus. MSI is also now restricting voltage to X3D CPUs.

https://videocardz.com/newz/msis-new-bios-restricts-voltage-for-amd-ryzen-7000x3d-cpus

Sounds like AMD rushed these out the door without proper validation.

Gigabyte boards now as well. O boy, this looks awesome. Will be curious to see the performance change after they fix/reduce the voltages.

Gigabyte scrubbing the internet of their older BIOS as well now. Love that everyone was quick to blame Asus though.

AMD being their best AMD while AMD'ing themselves yet again..... 🤣 (Looks over at the 7900XTX vs 4090)

Motherboard makers being proactive in restricting OOB voltages while AMD sorts out what their chips can and can't do.

Hey....

At least my USB ports work flawlessly this time!

I kid! It isn't like AMD isn't slowly chipping away at Intel's marketshare so they must be doing something right....

Brand new, but Z690 as I don't think MSIU offer newer gen Unify-X boards.

We use to not have to pay sales tax when ordering out of state, but that has long since changed. And Newegg has a hub in California as well. So we always paid tax unless tax exempt, which I discontinued with them a long time ago.

And when I was talking about warranty it was more of the Miicrocenter warranty than the manufactures warranty. I would rather have my money back to buy something else than an out of date motherboard fixed in two years time. We have the standard 3 years warranty on most motherboards.

My tax rate is 7.775% where I live and others pay as high as 10.750% in California.

Yep, I figured out that there is different taxes depending on where you live in U.S. As well where you live in the State. And thanks 🙂

But you have an advantage... The valuta exchange rate. We pay quite a lot for this. Everything is valued after USD and some cases Euro. Always with an disadvantage for a small valuta as Norwegian NKR.

Edit. Here for EU 2023 VAT Rates in Europe - Tax Foundation (Norway 25%). The worst is Hungary with 27%.
