I built and gave my nephew his first starter gaming PC today. He had been using a POS laptop with integrated graphics and begging his parents for a desktop. He's been scrimping and saving for over a year now and has amassed $350.  I tossed in a 25" Dell gaming display  1080p to top it off. I told him to save his $350 and use it for a future graphics card upgrade if needed but seeing as how he was limping along with a really bad laptop all this time....

He's also a fan of Star Trek and the borg so I went for a cube look.

M.2 boot / SSD games / HD Storage

Asrock A380

Asrock Pro RS B660M

ID-Cooling

600w EVGA PSU

GIM Micro ATX case

I used a mix of on the shelf components and components left over from upgrading my wife's PC to my old Strix Z690 D4 + 12900k + B-die 4000 sticks.

While I was upgrading/building his PC, I put a contact frame on his socket since I have extras. 🙂

I played WoW for an hour or so on it. Solid little 1080p rig with RT off and ~7/10 graphics setting getting 75-90fps so it will do nicely for his Steam collection. He also loves playing Quake so this will obviously run that crazy good and then some.

We've now gotten to the point in PC gaming where DEVs have to include a "performance budget" tool to help the kiddo xbox gamers that got their first PC during COVID. The tool helps them adjust their settings so they don't whine and cry post launch it's not running at 400 fps on 4K Ultra. 🤡🤡🤡🤡

You can now use this patched Nvflash to flash the old vBIOS to get full 1.1v back on any 4090 card. This also works on 4080 as I just flashed my volts limited 4080 back to full 1.11v.

Well, Hallelujah. I don't need it but downloaded it "just in case" I end up owning one of the castrated ADA GPUs or need to flash something unusual. Thank you.

Funny Github user name for that guy. I worked there for 14 years a long time ago. Maybe his first name is Jake, so he is "Jake not from State Farm" LOL.

Edit: I have been using the 1000W 4090 vBIOS and tried going back to the 666W Galax vBIOS. Instant decrease in performance. Even though it has never pulled 1000W I think there is something in the firmware algorithm that makes pulling more power more difficult the closer you get to the power limit. I will test this flashing back to the 1000W vBIOS just for giggles.

Absolutely. In case any of us have to RMA a card, were sure to get a castrated version back which is BS. Thankfully this legend took card of that issue.

Not sure any of you have tried out this new free benchmark. With my new voltage headroom I've been able to extend my lead.

Newest 3dMark is buggy AF. It validated fine, then went back to grab screenshot and shows not. Then launching a benchmark it will show a different benchmark but then launch the correct one. Very buggy behavior lately. O well.

UL has turned 3DMark into a totally buggy piece of garbage. Nothing I have tried allows me to get an impressive score on Solar Bay, including testing on 2 versions of Windows 10 and three versions of Windows 11. There are scores in the 3DMark Hall of Fame that are beating mine by a lot using inferior systems that are not tuned as well, but trail my Sky Diver, Fire Strike, Time Spy and Speedway scores to a similar degree. I have similar issues with Port Royal and VR Mark, which I also think are a joke benchmark like Solar Bay. All three of them always return lower than expected scores for me and and they are prone to end with errors and no score; yet I don't have issues and get phenomenal results with just about anything else.

Have you forced ReBar through NvInspector for 3dmark? There isn't exactly a profile for SolarBar, but I found forcing for general 3dmark profile it helped a bit. Forced with Battlefield V profile for all 3 toggles in NVINspector.

Yes, I apply that to my default profile as part of my normal setup routine. Also disabled ECC. The scores are very erratic and can vary as much as 10,000 points over a dozen runs.

Edit: @Talonanother thing I am seeing now that I did not before is if Solar Bar errors out it sometimes tells me that the primary display is not connected and my computer can't run the benchmark due to not enough VRAM. Never have seen that with the other 3DMark DLC. Really weird. Running RTSS in the background for OSD also triggers it erroring out for some reason. Buggy crap software.

I have to close out of MSI Afterburner and Riva in order to run the benchmark. So I can't watch clocks in real-time. I set my clock, close out and run the benchmark and it runs fine. Others have reported the same issue so hopefully it gets fixed soon.

I have to close out of MSI Afterburner and Riva in order to run the benchmark. So I can't watch clocks in real-time. I set my clock, close out and run the benchmark and it runs fine. Others have reported the same issue so hopefully it gets fixed soon.

I was able to get it to run with RTSS/OSD by manipulating settings in RTSS. I am not running it because it lowers benchmark scores, but I was at least able to get it to stop crashing with RTSS running.

My honest opinion is this benchmark just isn't ready for prime time and it is extremely unreliable and flawed. This result is not related to tuning so much as running the benchmark enough times that it eventually pukes up an abnormally high score. Looks like this is the best score I am going to get until I have time to run the benchmark another 20 or 30 times until it calculates a higher score. I am seeing 2500-3500 3DMark points variance between runs without changing any settings. I have also tried two versions of Windows 10 (LTSC 2019 and LTSC 2021) and three versions of Windows 11 (one totally stock with all of the cancer and two mods with Micro$lop trash exorcised) and it doesn't matter how many processes or services are running in terms of benchmark results. I am still seeing lots of illogically inflated results in the HOF with people running the same hardware (CPU, mobo, drivers and vBIOS) with lower overclocks. If I lower my overclock to match the illogically high results, my scores are like 3000-4000 points lower than their reported clocks depending on how many times I re-run it.

I noticed random results also. somewhat consistant if 1 percent isn't a big deal too you, but when the difference between 10th and first is 1 percent this benchmarks randomness is a breaker. I scored 2nd but the top spot is a desktop 3060 as it has 12gb of ram and is reported as laptop. meh more interested in firestrike ultra

it crossed my mind it might be modded with extra vram but who knows, ID change is likely as well

They very likely modded their card and added the missing VRAM modules. I've seen a few do that, some modded their 3070 laptops to use 16gb VRAM. Easier to do as the density of the GDDR6 modules has gotten higher.

The test seems to also really like CPU/memory speed. Have you considered getting that HP into Gear 1? Gear 2 is terrible on laptops. Can shave off an easy 20ns of latency just by switching to Gear 1.

Bumping my memory overclock from 8000 to 8200 didn't seem to change much and results were equally random. It seems like the FPS in the first 5 to 10 seconds weigh heavily on the final score for some reason. If the FPS at the start are around 800-820 FPS the final score is notably higher.

Brother @Papusan Gratulerer med dagen. I hope you have a wonderful birthday tomorrow.  Any special plans?

1.jpg

Thank you very much bro Fox🙂 19. Aug here now, so now I'm 58🤯 No special plans for the day. Will visit my papa's grave as usual as the last years. I don't celebrate this day anymore. My papa died suddenly on my 50th birthday. So thats that. But we will eat some good food out.

This is what make me glad this day.... My oldest son is here now (come late 18. Aug). He will follow up our dog the next month. Me and my wife will travel to Islas Canary on wednesday and be there one month. Hence.... More pict for the pict lover @electrosoft😬

Bought two of these below so we can follow whats going on on notebooktalk. My phone is so damaged that I can't use it much for internet anymore. And I will wait to buy a new later this fall.  But we both needed something when we sit outside the pool and lick up the hot warming sun..... FYI. The weather on my birthday... Loads of sun today and the temps will be 27C. Maybe I have earned it.

Ready for some all black crocs @electrosoft?😛

Yes I had an Omen 16 11800H/3070 laptop similar to yours. Had same motherboard I believe.

I managed to overclock the RAM to Gear 1 and set 3200MHz CL17 through use of a USB drive and setting the variables myself. No BIOS screen or advanced BIOS unfortunately. Just typing in what I wanted, and pointing it to the addresses essentially. Kinda annoying to do have to it that way, but it works and isn't particularly difficult once you figure it out. At a minimum setting Gear 1 will help greatly. You're already at 3200 CL22 by default, but by default it's using Gear 2 which is terribly slow.

Point me to your current BIOS download/file. Let me dump the BIOS file and take a look. Then I'll PM you instructions on how to make the USB file, and how to type the commands.

When you get in and get it to do what you want you feel like you hacked your machine lol.

Also loved this show, was a shame when they got rid of it.
