This quad channel kit is really nice. They are super heavy and the heatsinks look excellent.

Thats great performance on this system! Honestly, I think it could drive a 4090 pretty well. These high end systems last so long. This 10+ year old rig is still very powerful today. Especially for normal computing.

Looking to buy a CPU for my daughter’s first desktop PC. I won’t be getting a discrete GPU right away for this system. She will be using just the iGPU on the CPU for all of her gaming needs. Plus she only runs like Roblox, and Sims 4 anyways.

It seems like the 12900KS is probably the way to go here. I’m looking at newer chips and I don’t think I can find anything for this cheap. Any thoughts on other possible options? I’m looking to spend no more than $300? Preferably less.

I do plan to overclock the iGPU quite a bit, which seems to help more so than overclocking actual graphics cards lol.

For the money I don't think you're going to do any better than that 12900KS on iGFX.

No kidding. Thats what I think. This is a brand new tray 12900KS for $250 and $18 shipping 🤩. I do not think a faster CPU can be had. She’s only going to be running DDR5 5600 Gskill, but I might actually upgrade her ram since that’s pretty inexpensive. Or maybe I will put the slower ram in my son’s system since he has a RTX3060, and put his Mdie in my daughters iGPU system. I think it depends on what type of 5600 ram this is that I have. I hope it’s plane Jane M-die, but I’m worried it’s the Samsung stuff 😭lol

Well, they have 15 of them available at that price so hopefully the one they send you is a good bin.

And yeah, for that price? You're not going to go much better elsewhere. ~$268 + tax shipped for a 12900KS is pretty nice.

Something to keep in mind if you're contemplating an AMD build is the 7600x which trades blows with the 12900K and can be had for a tad cheaper but only has half the threads but has a good iGPU too:

Timestamped at overall average but take into consideration if you're going iGPU as a priority.

On the other hand, if you want to max OC a 12900k....lol

The old Alder Lake is as good as it get. And well proven. Have been here a long time.  New doesn't mean much if old work well. What you see below shouldn't have happened.

Ryzen 9000: Karma is not good

Most of the problems can be summed up as follows: instabilities in the best case, crashes in certain benchmarks or, in the worst case, a processor that stops working permanently. We are therefore at the conjunction of two sources of problems. A software problem, on which rumors seem to indicate that AMD is quickly preparing a solution... But also a hardware problem with processors that deform as we have seen, in a very limited way however, with certain Ryzen 7000.

My grandmother often told me, “where there’s smoke, there’s fire.” The delay in the launch of the Ryzen 9000 and the incredible reason given to explain it may have been hiding something more serious. This generation was clearly not ready for a release in the heat of this August…

A damn good advice. We older often see the fire before it's too late. Because we have learned the old lesson. Start walk before you go. Me is younger than @Mr. Foxbut not sure I'm dumber.  Hmmm... What's wrong?

I would have been open to AMD. But I already had a 2022 Z690 Hero motherboard. So I’m going to just use that and build a simple iGPU gaming rig.  I’m going to overclock the iGPU to the max, run the fastest ram I can. As far as I remember the iGPU on 12th gen really trumped the prior gen DDR4 Intel iGPU’s.

I think I may have a G.SKILL 7200 kit I am not using that I will sell for a good price if you don't have any already. I also have a Crucial/Micron DDR5 Pro kit that I have used just for testing, but it's really not designed for overclocking. I think I have run it at 6000 on a two slot board. Which is probably all a 4-slot Z690 motherboard is going to manage with stability anyhow.

yep saw that today, as well. even brings a 4090 to its knees maxed out at 4K with RT. should be a nice gpu stability testing tool for OCing the 5090 😄 (and a prime example for anyone asking why anyone would bother upgrading from a 4090 😛 )

I like that you think a 12900KS on a Z690 Hero is a "simple gaming rig" 🙂 Simple would be a 12400 on a B660 D4 board heh.

But iGPU's are pretty even between the two and if I had to choose, I would go 12900KS too especially with that pricing. I'm tempted to pick up a few and bin them at that price lol.

When you get the 12900KS, slap it on the encore and see where the IMC tops out. Now that I have the Lightning and 8400+ sticks in action, I'll be retesting the the 2x 12900k's I have along with the 12400 just to see where they can go on DDR5.

On DDR4, the cool hand luke topped out at 4133 on DDR4, the 12900K I delidded topped out at 4000. The 12400 topped out at 3333 (yes, 3333). This 14900KS hit 4200+ on it.

I forgot how different overclocking was with this old stuff. What seems like very high voltage now is normal back then. XMP default OC voltage for DDR3 is 1.650V and bumping it to 1.700V is better. The colors of the values do not change to red until like 1.750V and that is the low end of the red range. VCore using an ASUS "watercooled OC gaming profile" is 1.550V. And, even with that high of voltage look at the reasonable temperatures... Core max 78°C with an AIO.

Big die... big IHS... less heat bottleneck. But, everyone just loves a die shrink. It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye.

Newer is better newer. Smaller is better hotter. The truth will set you free.

Yeah I watched Jay's video yesterday.

Final conclusion? 240mm->420mm with everything else being equal results in a ~2w differential and slightly tighter variance at 253w limit even after normalizing temps.

If you have the case space and with ~$28USD separating the top and bottom models, go big. If you have a smaller case, you will still get great performance even down to a 240mm.

I'd like to see a retest at 320w though....

Yeah, 12900KS is a straight up beast. My son has one in his PC, and every time I use his PC to help him with something, the first thing I notice is how fast it is. I am not sure what his SP rating is on that chip. Never checked it. But his DDR5 6800c34 is working great on this really cheap Z790 Asrock 4 dimm motherboard. As for my own testing I use a regular Apex board, I did try the Encore, but I noticed it was weaker in ram OC than my Apex A04 was. The Encore is great, but my specific Encore sample could not compete with my white Apex. The Encore is also apparently assembled with cheaper gadgetry than the white Apex Z790.

Bios 2503 and new microcode 129= Great CPU overclocking! Great power delivery! Not so great ram OC. I could not stabilize my 8800c38 profile on 2503. Weird things happen. 8600 c36-49-49-49-88 also does not work properly for some reason on this bios. I am not sure what it is.

Bios 9901 and microcode 123= Meh CPU overclocking! Meh power delivery! It takes some work and effort to get the CPU dialed properly and you just cannot get it as good as 2503 with the new microcode. Memory overclocking on this bios is superior to anything available though. You can reset bios, load 8800c38 and it works without trouble daily.

Disgusting!!! AMD have no QC.

The main issue is upgrading a system from one CPU to another (IE 7600x to a 7900X3D/7950X3D).

I've been using and monitoring core usage for several months now with this 7950X3D and I can say disabling CCD1 for an X3D only box versus running full tilt is the same on a clean install with the newest BIOS and drivers on the x670e carbon.

Running Fallout 76, WoW, Starfield, Deux Ex, CP2077 and more, as soon as you're in game, CCD1 is put to sleep and all the load shifts to CCD0. I used Ryzen Master to monitor core usage.

I also used Project Lasso for awhile to see if there was a difference and there was not resulting in the same basic effective outcome.

I'm not sure what magic was worked from December to now, but there is no more drifting like before. One thing I did do is stop using MSI's chipset drivers and went straight to the source and got them from AMD so that may have helped too. Could have been one of the BIOS updates too as Agesa is constantly updated. There is also the prospect of gamebar updates/refinements on M$ end.

I just did a clean install along with the newest BIOS update a few days ago and everything is working right as rain with proper core parking during gaming with the 7950X3D on the MSI x670E carbon.

In summary:

Clean install with new CPU (newest drivers and BIOS update) = no problems

Upgrade CPU from single CCD to dual CCD X3D model but want to keep your current Windows install? Uninstall chipset drivers,  clean out driver debris with Revo, reinstall chipset drivers

Still got a problem? Toggle Driver for CPPC in BIOS. You can usually toggle back to auto after if you want and it keeps the proper settings.

I hate it when hardware needs a specific operating system for the hardware features to work. That is super scummy. It is especially scummy if it is an operating system that sucks and you don't want to use it, but it is the only way the feature will function because of collusion between software developer and hardware manufacturer.  That should be against the law. Hardware features should be required to be OS agnostic and the sale of the hardware banned if it is not.

Agreed, but sometimes synergistic pairings between software and hardware do pay dividends. Apple comes to mind, love 'em or hate 'em. 🙂

The real problem was when Intel and AMD started to deviate from a monolithic type design and started offering these hybrid designs both in core differentials (P vs E) and core functionality (X3D vs non-X3D) so OSes could no longer just work with a generic scheduler. We're expecting M$ and AMD/Intel to work hand in hand to properly have their CPUs know what and how to prioritize tasks.

It has gotten somewhat better since Alderlake and 7950X3D/7900X3D introduction but it will always be a work in progress.....
