Yes, the X170 motherboard is definitely a limiting factor. And, so is temperature. I have run benchmarks with the CPU at 5.6GHz all core on chilled water.

I know. That was pretty awesome. I hope to beat that using the cryo cooler and the Gigabyte Aorus Master Z590 motherboard in my newly built workstation. This is gonna be fun.😁

In that case you may want to consider one of the bare die frames that I am selling.

These are listed here for $35 + $5 shipping. They are listed on eBay for $55.

FS: RockitCool Bare Die Frames - Intel 10th Gen and Intel 11th Gen

Running bare die will facilitate better temperatures and higher overclocks. Sometimes you have to fuss with the mounting to get the water block to sit level on the die, but once you get that situated there is no more effective way to lower CPU temperatures on ambient water. Short of more expensive artificial cooling like chilled water, extreme measures like LN2 or DICE there is not a more effective cooling mod.

As soon as I can find a reliable way to go bare die on 12th Gen I will do so without hesitation. It was a bummer that the Supercool Computer 12th Gen bare die block performed poorly. I think it was rushed using past logic and could have been excellent had enough effort been given to the jet plate design. There were not enough fins in the stack. They were too thick and had too much space between them. I really dislike having an IHS. It is an impediment that serves no useful purpose that I can identify.

A new baby is soon on its way to bro Papusan's Casa. And once again.... No money going to nvidia from me 🙂 Be too greedy is not profitable in the long term. They can just keep their 2 years old 30xx cards in their shelves for me. Let them loose money.

GeForce® GTX 980 Ti AMP! Extreme. Wanted the 980 Ti Lightning but those are still too expensive.

Nope no such cards here in Norway. Its ebay auction and I'll pay with credit cards. Wee will see how it pans out🙂 The seller have been on ebay since 2004 and have 100% feedback.

A few 980Ti here but those is the weaker one. And not interested for me.

I wanted only the 980 Ti Lightning or the Zotac GTX 980 Ti AMP! Extreme. I expect getting back my money here if I wanted sell it on the used market here. The cheaper and weaker 980 Ti cards cost well above 200 Euro here home. So this won't be a big lose.

Got the new "old" baby. All well. With documentation, parts and paqckage in good shape.

All have a nice weekend. Yesterday was the 27th wedding anniversary for me and my lovely wife. And we finally got good weather here home, and exactly the same nice weather as our wedding day in 1995.

Nice! I had a 980 Ti FTW right at the beginning of COVID, and I sold it after cleaning it all up. I wish I had it back for fun and nostalgia.  What is the ASIC quality on that beast?

Picked up a decently priced 6750 XT for the old Spare Parts rig. Honestly not bad and been having more fun tuning this card via MorePowerTool. Haven't used an AMD card in quite some time and I haven't had any issues with anything so far.

https://www.3dmark.com/spy/29734518

Took a few nights of coffee, but I finally got MorePowerTool version to let me create a registry file with version 1.3.8 Final. For whatever reason PowerColor cards don't all seem to be supported and 6750 XT is locked down, but I found a workaround that worked. Can finally bypass their shit 253w limit and pull MOAAARRR POWER. This run was at 316w, and still hit the limit on power so I need to up my limit I set.

Hi. I mean it was 81.8% Asic quality. I mean the bin is Ok. Not the upper top and not in the lower/middle end. I can see this from the info from EVGA for 980 Ti https://eu.evga.com/articles/00944/EVGA-GeForce-GTX-980-Ti-KINGPIN/

@Mr. Fox As you can se from the link above... You'll get variable bin also today for newer k|ngp|in cards (but all at same price nowadays). Bro @johnksss confirmed also this with his new better 3090 card after his leak accident. There is no guarantee you'll get the upper bin even if you buy EVGA's most expensive cards. You need to have the right contacts for that.

The graphics card come in good shape (the whole package). The seller even sent with his original invoice of the card. I enjoy old equal as new. I don't need the newest and greatest every year.

Your graphics score is near the top on the 3Dmark leaderboard for the card. Nice 🙂

Finally we see more correct priced cards (used and new). Hope it will last. Deskop sales dropped over 10% so the HW manufacturers have to be careful if they will try maxing out profits. Too high prices for midrange/upper level will lower the interest to buy new. People will instead buy cheaper and this will in the end hit the HW manufacturers right where it feeels best. No miners (they bought 35% of all cards). Nvidia can't push that loss on new parts.

Picked up a couple hundred more points. Thinking the i3 is holding it back from snagging performing at peak. Might slap it in the 12900KS rig later and pushed it even harder. This run was actually undervolted to 1125mV from stock 1200mV. So definitely room to tweak and figure out how to extract max perf still.

Yep. And more fans will be added for the custom lop. I use mostly 3000 rpm high pressure fans.  The chassis is the Corsair 1000D. Bigger is better (at least for my usage).

Yes, it is extremely discouraging that there is so much variance, and the fact that even some Kingpin cards have garbage bin quality is demoralizing and feels like a scam. It applies to both GPU core and VRAM. You can get a GPU that the core sucks and the memory rocks (like mine) or a great core and sucky memory, both excellent or both garbage. It is terribly discouraging and one of the reasons you almost never see me running benchmarks anymore. Knowledge and skill don't matter when you get shitty products in the GPU lottery. Brother @johnksss got blessed with a golden KPE sample to the extent that the tragic mishap actually ended up being a random stroke of good fortune.

It used to be that you could simply give a GPU with lower ASIC more voltage and it would overclock the same as a GPU with much better ASIC. As long as you could keep it cool enough with the higher voltage, the ASIC really did not matter that much and you couldn't really find a difference in the max overclock ceiling until you exhausted the available voltage and passed through the veil into extreme sub-zero sanctuary. That was true to the extent that I didn't really care what the ASIC was because GPUs overclocked in the same way that CPUs do... just give it whatever extra voltage it needed and everything was fine.

Then the Green Goblin developed their dark witchcraft and depraved fetish for sodomizing customers in more brutal ways by introducing firmware that no longer allows the silicon lottery losers to level the playing field with more voltage. They began stacking the cards with Falcon security and hulk-signed firmware with the introduction of Maxwell. The rules have been broken and the game rigged with loaded dice. Winning today is a matter of predestination and generally reserved for those appointed to divine favor. Once you draw a short straw in the modern-day lottery you are sentenced to a cursed existence and permanently doomed to failure due to their AIDS-infected firmware cancer algorithms. No amount of lubricant will be enough to avoid a hemorrhaging and fissured posterior orifice thanks to their virus firmware deployment.

But, it is important to note that they don't charge any less for their rubbish silicon samples. You enjoy the privilege of paying the same price for their garbage.

If you can't wait then don't pay above 1000$ for a 2 years old gen card. And 3090 Ti should never have been sold for more than 1399,99$ at launch day.

RTX 2080 Ti was $1,200 at release and dropped to $700 with release of 3080 (this before the mining and scalpers fest). And with Nvidia's milking of the better 3090 die to make an 3090 Ti I mean the price drop has to be from 3090 level MSRP (New from the store doesn't make it more appealing regarding price value - still 2 years old GPU arch - used or brand new old tech - it’s the same).

(overpriced old gen graphics cards = Joke). Nvidia's price setting for their graphics cards is awful, but what Intel offers is not much better.

And here is a new Joke. But from Intel.....

Agreed....

Only thing we can hope is the glut will cause 4000 series card makers to re-evaluate their launch pricing to realize the Pandemic pricing was an ad hoc outlier situation with so many things that could go wrong did exactly that (Pandemic, Mining, Tariffs oh my.....) and pricing needs to get back to reality especially towards the end of the cycle when I'll be eyeing up a end cycle 4090ti or skipping altogether and getting a 5000 series if needed.

WoW Dragonflight apparently has a lot of optimizations and code clean up and runs even better than Shadowlands which did ok @ 4k full Ultra except for two areas known to bring GPUs to their knees (Ardenweald and Bastion).

I'm also playing Fallout 76 full 4k max settings and my GPU isn't even going over 130w full load it is so non taxing atm.

Even 13th gen doesn't have me excited in any type of way based on early results vs 12th.

Early results show 4080 = 3090ti

Full fat AD104 is rumored to be 4070ti (not 4070) not launching till late next year.

Maybe AMD will bring the high heat this time?

I'd like to use an EVGA board whenever I switch over to a desktop, but the MSRP of their boards is quite high in my opinion. I understand that the Dark series is going to be expensive because they are of very good quality and overbuilt for XOC, but I wish the Classified was a bit cheaper, or if they re-introduced the FTW SKU to slot between the Classified and Dark or below the Classified (can't remember how their tier naming goes lol.)

The discounts on the boards right now seem very reasonable though. 500 USD for the Dark board seems like a steal to me.

I am definitely going to keep an eye open for EK to release that. I already have that water block (with the normal cold plate) on the 12900K in Banshee and it is excellent. I had read where they were working on a bare die kit, but had not seen any photos of it. Now I am more excited about it.

I'm tempted to get a Classified. Killer price and would tie in nicely with my GPU. Throw in an associate's code discount and knock off another 5%. I'm just wary of 4 slots as I will only use 2.

And true, launch pricing was high. It is quickly becoming an end cycle purchasing game now. Top tier boards at substantial discounts, new, with full warranties.

I think Classified is basically the FTW in this scenario.

I think Classified is basically the FTW in this scenario.

I am really leaning toward purchasing products at the threshold of their EOL cycle, too. Everything is overpriced and offers poor value based on price until it is on the verge of becoming obsolete and priced for clearance of stock.

It's no secret that EVGA is my favorite brand, and I have never been as pleased with competing motherboards as I have been with their Dark series. To put it bluntly, they have no match. I used to prefer ASUS firmware, but after owning multiple Dark motherboards I no longer think so. The EVGA UEFI interface makes a lot more sense and eliminates menu items for settings that I view as unimportant. A lot of what I disable or enable in the BIOS is set that way by default by EVGA.

The Classified seems like an excellent motherboard, but I am also reluctant to consider it due to the 4-DIMM design. Even when you are only using two sticks of memory, the additional slots and longer traces diminish overclocking headroom and impair stability compared to a 2-DIMM design.
