And NBR is dead!

I remember that NBR Rep feature was added as a XenForo add-on after the migration from vB, although I forget if it was an existing plug-in or developed specifically for NBR. Could have been the latter. It had been there forever on vB, and nobody wanted to lose their Rep 😁

The Rep messaging component was nice, I liked that too. Something I am guessing most members weren't aware of: Different from Private Messages, the Rep messages were actually... well, readable by moderators. Probably not a big deal (everything is readable by Admins anyway) but yeah...

Edit: For those who are wondering, this clip is from the excellent HBO series Succession. Wait for the dialogue about "We're listening". Hilarious.

You're overthinking things.  And GDPR hasn't been an issue for forums.

Perhaps.  But as usual, just because something is new in the legal arena doesn't mean it isn't actionable.  The ikeafans forum was shut down completely after many decades in operation and even a relationship with ikea.  So these sort of things can happen and it's usually not in the user's favor.  It's important to be aware of potential issues to avoid a NBR 4.0 transition sometime down the road.

From what I recall working with vb3, the like feature was an addon.  I'm not sure with vb4.  Having this type of data carry forward is one of those important things when migrating a forum or even just the database.  I still have old copies of my vb databases for some of the data that never migrated as someday it could be manually migrated with some sql queries.

Thank you. Yeah this was specifically the Rep feature, as opposed to the Like feature. I don't know if it was an add-on to vB, but it might have been, since I haven't seen it elsewhere. And I am almost certain it was developed specifically for NBR after the XenForo migration. They did indeed migrate all the Rep, including comments, as I recall.

What was lost was all the Likes at some point in the lead-up to the migration (not during the actual migration). I never heard details of how that happened, and I didn't sense much pressure in pursuing a fix, neither from members nor from other mods. Most said it wasn't that important.

That is actually quite impressive as it would have required some custom coding and database work--not cheap or easy.  Someone had a labor of love affair with the site for this to materialize...

Small losses like this can happen when migrating something that's essentially live 24x7.  I know I've lost little bits along the way when I've moved hosts or upgraded.  Hence why I try to keep a 'cold storage' backup of every iteration now.

Not only does the community live on, but in case you weren't aware, most of the historical NBR content was archived through an amazing effort by members here:

Did you see the announcements about NBR closing before Monday? If not, I'm curious: how did you discover efgxt.net? (Glad that you found us, but just curious how word is getting out about the new forums now that NBR is gone.)

I was already aware of NBR closing thanks to Charles

I was posting on NBR days before the closure and made a few posts about it especially my complaint that the community was split into 3 different forums instead of 1 single forum. I copied and pasted the links of them on notepad and i joined here when i had some free time. I tried going on Notebook-review.com but its down for some reason.

I don't see that but I do get a message saying that the domain name is parked and available for sale by GoDaddy. The forum might be gone?

Sounds like a dns resolution error somewhere if one browser is hitting it and the other isn't.

Damn it feels like TT issued a takedown notice to Spartan's site!

@RecieverIs there anyway to make the reactions visible by using darker color. I seem to be missing everytime.

Is that what really happened? I had a sneaking suspicion there could be some agitation if the name is the same.

Are you on the default theme?

Yes I'm on default System theme on firefox. Didn't see theme setting like xenforo or maybe I'm looking at wrong setting/section.

TT did not issue a take down for Spartans site, simply put he did a ton of work to the site and when trying to resolve the email issue the support staff that was "helping" him deleted all the posts.  Spartan got disheartened after spending all the time and effort and decided to nix the whole thing.  I was thinking about purchasing the domain and offering it for use here (or as a redirect) but sadly it seems to already be purchased.

That sounds pretty crappy and not fun when you've spent time and money on something. Will be interesting to see if anyone does anything with the domain.

Unless Spartan has already handed it off to someone else, then he still owns it until January 26, 2024...  Someone would have to reach out to him to have it transferred.

(whois data shows that it was purchased January 26, 2022 for a two-year term.)

In that case it does not appear to have gone through yet, or if it has, GoDaddy has not yet released the domain.  (It does not appear to have changed hands since January 26.)  I'll keep an eye on this for the next few days and see if it opens up — but it may well be snapped up by a bot if it does.

[Edit] After reading some I do not think that GoDaddy will release it back for anyone to purchase without being prompted to do so by its previous owner, at least not for a while.  They might auction it off with a big pile of domains 😕

I thought that might be the case initially, as he still has his original role to fulfill. Spartan deserves better, if you are in contact with him please let him know that he is always welcome here.

Spartan should have just given the domain to this forum or offered to sell here first. It was a unique name and we could have solved the userbase splintering issue with this forum unification.

If it was purchased with HID funding it would likely be difficult long term. HID generally does well for us but a company is a profit seeking venture at the end of the day.
