Recommended Posts

Windows 11 version 24H2 is officially released today, and with it, Windows 11 LTSC 2024 which is based on the same.  It has been available to OEMs for a few months now, but not to businesses or through other places like Visual Studio subscriptions.

Windows 11 LTSC 2024 has a support end date of October 9, 2029 for "plain" Enterprise version, and October 10, 2034 for the IoT version.

Win11 LTSC 2024 (both non-iot & IOT) is available thru MVS (MS visual studio subscriptions) likely late afternoon Oct. 1st

Yeah, I guess it wasn't clear in my post.  It was previously unavailable through MSVS (despite being available to OEMs), but it became available through MSVS on October 1 (...I was downloading images from there at the same time that I made my post...), as well as through business volume license systems.

I've been using it in an ARM VM on my Mac for a few months with no issues.  Haven't upgraded any bare metal systems yet and probably will give it a good six months to shake out any issues.  (I just saw this about an undeletable upgrade cache that you might get...)

Here's about a similar kind of supplier, been in the business for a very long time. What I got from them worked fine for me. Large selection of their pricelist in the article.

The greedy bastards.... But I won't pay to play with the better and older OS. Microsoft can't force me to use Win 11. And they won't get a dime from me for using Win 10. Losers!

Want to keep getting Windows 10 updates? It'll cost you $30

Microsoft confirms that consumers can remain on Windows 10 past the October 2025 end-of-support expiration date with an extra $30 fee

Still... Microsoft rather prefer that you use their latest and greatest. Even if you are on old hardware (Just buy new HW).

Microsoft seems to not like it anymore it you want to download Windows 10, even if you do it from an official source.

They're taking advantage of most people who wants to stick with Windows 10. Currently its at 61% of the OS marketshare while Windows 11 is at 35%. They want people to buy new hardware because of the TPM 2.0 requirement but you can bypass it with rufus to install Windows 11 on unsupported PCs. Inb4 Microsoft patches it lol.

Nope. But you never know with Microsoft. LTSC builds is mostly used by corps. Not so sure Microsoft want to trigger their harm/anger 🙂

Btw. Also this time you can see Win 11 users got their love from Redmond... Why upgrade to a newer and more buggy OS?

Hence no reason to upgrade to the new buggy mess🙂 And here you can see... People still prefer older Win 10. See bolded text.

Windows 11 lost momentum in November

Microsoft's Windows 11 campaigns have led to increased market share - for Windows 10.

The fact remains, however, that Windows 10, despite its impending retirement, is still the market-dominant operating system and may remain so for longer than Microsoft had hoped. Much of the reporting surrounding Windows 11 has revolved around bugs , incompatibility with certain hardware and higher system requirements, which of course does not help to attract new users.

LOL. Why bother if you use Win 10 ?

Microsoft details how to install Windows 11 on unsupported PC not meeting requirements

As mentioned above, the company absolutely wants people on Windows 11 as even the latest Statcounter data suggests it isn't going as great as Microsoft would have hoped. Thus Microsoft even allows users on unsupported PCs to upgrade to Windows 11 but makes such users sign a waiver first.

Well.  Ran today's Patch Tuesday patch on my Windows 11 ARM VM.  It is running Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC.  After the patch, I had new weather and news stuff on the lock screen, at the bottom, that was not there before.  (Four rectangular tiles.)  I had to go find the toggle in settings to disable it.  So much for unexpected new stuff not being added if you are on LTSC...

Just wondering, been living with 10 ltsc 1809, soon 4 years without a hitch, on several machines, very satisfied++, it just works, all personal programs in use are fine, security to 2029, etc.

But, asking those with experience on many versions, are there any (important) gains in thinking about 10 ltsc 2021, or 11 ltsc, missing out on anything (really) useful staying with 1809?

Thanks

I would say, from an end-user perspective, the jump from LTSC 2019 to LTSC 2021 is pretty negligible, if you aren't running into blocks of software that doesn't want to run.

Going to LTSC 2024 (Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC), you obviously get the "Windows 11 experience" which has some pros and cons.

I personally prefer Windows 10 over Windows 11 and would hold out if I could.  (I am still using Windows 10 LTSC on my work PC.  It might never go to Windows 11; I am hoping to ditch Windows altogether next year, as the main OS anyway, just using it in a VM for a handful of apps that I can't do without.)

You can try it and see, I think there is a "free trial" of Windows 11 LTSC which you can download and use for 60 days or something; throw it on a test system or test partition and see how you like it before committing to upgrading your main OS.
