dont mix up mobile 4090 with the full fat desktop verison, worlds of difference. id wait for the 5090, either u can snipe one right at launch (until then ull also have more money saved up) or u can grab a 4090 for much cheaper than now since it will not be top dog anymore 🙂

It's cheap enough and definitely better than a laptop. Probably a good starting point to move away from turdbooks.

I was looking up benchmarks and it looks like its twice as good as my beloved turd.

 

Im really thinking about it, it will be bought today unless I find a better deal! maybe amazon has a better deal, not sure but I want at least a 3080 or better! any ideas?

I would buy that one before the one at Best Buy for a lot of reasons. Better case (from what I can tell by the outside appearance) and DDR5 are just two of the reasons. That ASUS case is not going to support cooling upgrades and has poor airflow. As best I can tell from the photos, the one on Amazon is better overall.

thanks for the feedback. I get some money today in the mail and want a desktop, the amazon one could be with me in 1 day. thursday and I would be pretty excited, would be able to upgrade to a 5090 in a few months so theirs that. anything you saw worth getting?

Yeah go for it. Grab the one on Amazon. I have not looked at pre-builts so I did not notice anything to recommend. That one from Amazon should be easily upgradable. As a general rule I would avoid an ASUS or MSI pre-built PC.

So I take it you don't want to build you own? Did you do some price comparisons on PCpartpicker to see what you could build for a comparable price? I'm not really feeling the 5800X on that platform as even a 5800X3D will hamstring a 4090 let alone a 5090.

 

I would price out and build an AM5 system in preparation for a 4090/5090 class card and slap a 4070 in there for now.

I was thinking of getting a better system via memoryexpress.com and building all the parts from the ground up but its quite a bit more money via memexpress. the prebuilt is 1700 for something similar is around 2500. cpu should I go all out with a i9 14th gen and a 3070 or 3060 ti?

 

actually at memoryexpress for the same power its cheaper buying a turdbook. 3400 for a 4070 setup and 3200 for a 4080 laptop

Ya know, there's nothing wrong with preferring laptops. I know plenty of us go on and on about the "ultimate power" of a desktop but if laptops are your forte and you can budget it, go wild and get a monster laptop. Sell the bulk of your laptops you have now for funding. Keep the best one for portability and go get a monster laptop.

 

I love desktops but I equally love laptops too. I always end up having 2-5 on hand at all times even when I eventually downsize they build themselves right back up again lol.

 

If you can find a clearance/close out last gen 13th gen / 4090 laptop for a good price that will net you ~3090ti level performance. Even a 7950hx / 4090 is no slouch either.

 

Don't ever waste your $$$ on a 4070 laptop. for Ada, it is 4080 and 4090 or seek out a last gen for a substantial discount.

Yeah I like laptops for a few big reasons, no i dont like the lack of MXM but its not a deal breaker because when the gpu is out of date its likely so is the cpu and when you factor in a cpu and gpu socketed upgrade it can be costly err was. I wanted more performance for the same price thats my only reason going desktop. 3080 is like a 4080 or 4090 laptop. and instead of shelling out 3400 its 1650. basically half off. I think im going to buy the amazon 3080 desktop with the i7. its more money but as Bro pointed out the better buy. I will save 1000 and get double my current performance, maybe I can sell off a few of my laptops on ebay.

 

3080 desktop or 4090 laptop those in my mind are the only two options. maybe a 4080 desktop if its a good deal.

Here's a run on my returned Asus G18 w/ full power 4080 to give you a good idea where it stand graphically. You're spot on with the ~3080 desktop performance metric. This is stock no OC on anything:

 

 

One of our local best buys has the G18 18" 13980hx/4080 on close out for $1584.00 which is a killer price especially toss in 5% back and it has the same (if not greater CPU performance depending on silicon) performance basically as the 14th gen version.

 

4090 variant of the same laptop gets you ~21.4k so 3090+ power in a laptop so a ~16% uplift along with a jump in VRAM.

 

Crazy to think just 2-3 years ago about a laptop with the former king desktop GPU power.

OK I called memory express and they have a i5 12th gen and 4060ti desktop thats upgradable to 14th gen i9 and 5090. its 1650 so a bit much for a 4060ti prebuilt but the upgradablity is important if I go the desktop route. if I could find a 4080 laptop for 2000 in cad id pounce the second I get paid. still searching alot in the sea of computers, nothing is really standing out deal wise.

Agreed. I think I recommended this to @ryan several months back to slowly build the system starting with the bones and work your way up depending on prices and what's on sale.

 

This is exactly what I do when I start to map out systems to build. I slowly start to accumulate parts over several months depending on prices as I love used/clearance items and go from there.

 

You can literally slap together a very competent AM5 system with 32 to 64gb of ram and a 1tb SSD for killer prices right now and build off of that.

 

CPU and GPU will almost always be the most expensive components.

yeah I thought about doing that more than once. just get a good base and work from their....but right now moneys not a super big issue its more or less what bargains are out there. Im interested in that 1650 system from amazon, but the cpu is kinda weak for a future 5090. im thinking of getting a i9 14th gen cpu and at least a 1000w power supply I guess I could build a killer base system for 1800 and add a 3060ti or a770 like you guys mentioned a few weeks back, its alot harder doing this when there are so many options and routes and real money at play, I likely won't have money like this for a very long time so I want to be smart about it. If I do get a 5090 it will set me back 2000 so I don't know what game is worth 3800 total to play at 4k/120 but GTA VI comes to mind and im sure forza horizon 6 will be amazing when it comes out, but 3800???

 

that deal with the 3080 is a pretty solid choice do you guys know or have a short list of places to get desktops?

 

the 3070ti isn't far from a 3080ti laptop around 4070 territory

I think that the 3070ti aero is going to overheat but with my cooler its going to be tough beating a 14000 timespy score for 1200cad...just enough power for 4k gaming and I don't care for 120hz

 

898usd is insanely cheap for a 9/10 condition 3070ti laptop of any variety, thoughts?

 

ok so its 1800 for a 3080 or 2000 for a 4080 laptop. its obvious with the display keyboard and everything else included like portability the laptop is the one to buy. I might hold off one more generation but if i get itchy to buy it will likely be the omen 16 with the 4080. thanks everyone for the help but it seems desktops are only worth it if your going for the 7900xtx or 4090

AM5 or wait for Intel's Socket 1851.

 

Socket 1700 is dead and AM4 is double dead (even if AMD keeps releasing silicon for it).

And from everything I've read, Arrow Lake is going to lay a big turd. AM5 is the only path forward that I am reading. Clock regression, no hyper threading, only sounds like a step backwards to me.

oh ok....so I havent bought anything yet..lol thankfully after your guys feedback on AM5.

 

I will just get a used omen 16 4080 laptop for 2000 or bite the bullet and get a 3060ti 14th gen i9 desktop with a decent motherboard power supply and cooling. I don't want to rush this even though im dying to play ratchet and clank at 4k ultra settings above 3 fps. because my 3060 literally gets 3fps haha terrible. If you know of a better alternative please let me know but its looking like if I want a 5090 down the line I will have to settle with a 3060ti now. or impulsively buy a laptop again and regret it because it overheats and ultimately lands on a notebook cooler and is used as a expensive poor performing desktop with its only saving grace I can put it in a backpack in case a volcano erupts or I have to move due to local saskquatches penetrating my town. jokes

well, theyre gonna replace hyperthreding with "rentable units", basically just a different approach to processing multiple threads at the same time. well have to wait and see how good that approach will actually be though.
